文档简介

(共18张PPT)
Period 3
Using Language Ⅰ
Learning aims
1. To activate students' prior knowledge about the topics that will be covered in the listening.
2. To practice listening to take notes.
3. To practice listening to see how a speaker supports his facts with evidence through a radio interview about world hunger.
4. To discuss the causes of world hunger and possible solutions.
Leading-in
Some 780 million people around the world are going hungry; almost fifty million children are at risk of death from severe wasting, said by UN Secretary-General António Guterres in 2023.
The world hunger problem is very acute.
联合国粮食及农业组织(Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,FAO)简称“粮农组织”,于1945年10月16日正式成立,是联合国系统内最早的常设专门机构,是各成员国间讨论粮食和农业问题的国际组织。

(Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO)合办,是联合国内负责多边粮食援助的机构。
Task 1: Listen to a radio interview and take notes. Then answer the following questions.
Listening and Speaking
1. What is the FAO What is its mission
2. What can seriously affect crop production
3. What does the FAO think about nutritious food
4. What is the FAO doing to alleviate world hunger
5. What does the FAO suggest countries do
1. What is the FAO What is its mission
2. What can seriously affect crop production
3. What does the FAO think about nutritious food
FAO stands for Food Agriculture Organization to eliminate world hunger.
Things like droughts, floods and climate change can seriously affect crop production.
People need to eat enough nutritious food which many people can't afford or don't have access to. The FAO believes everyone should have the right to healthy food.
4. What is the FAO doing to alleviate world hunger
5. What does the FAO suggest countries do
The UN is making efforts to reduce climate change and the FAO runs a project called Climate-Smart Agriculture which helps countries to develop sustainable agriculture.
The FAO suggests that every country focus on making new achievements in agriculture which can benefit the whole world. Global conflict must be eliminated.
Task 2: Listen again and identify how the speaker supports his facts. Match the supporting evidence with the facts.
Host: Good morning, listeners. Today is World Food Day, and David Bond from the UN's FAO is here to talk to us about world hunger. Welcome, David! Please explain what the FAO is and what its aims are.
David: Good moming. For those who don't know, FAO stands for Food and Agriculture Organization. And our aim is simple—to eliminate world hunger, which, according to our latest figures, stands at around 11% of the world's population.
Host: So I guess things like droughts, floods, and climate change are all major factors in this.
Listening text
David:Yes, that's right, they can all seriously affect crop production. And another factor is poverty. There is strong evidence to suggest that many people just can't afford to eat well. And it's not just about having enough food to eat; people need to eat enough nutritious food, which often they cannot afford or do not have access to. The FAO believes everyone should have the right to healthy food.
Host: And what about war I've seen many researchers say that it directly leads to mass hunger.
David: Absolutely true. Our research indicates that wars can heavily affect food production and transportation, meaning that millions of people have to go hungry.
Host: So what can we do to alleviate world hunger
David: Well, the UN is making efforts to reduce climate change, and the FAO runs a project called Climate-Smart Agriculture, which helps countries to develop sustainable agriculture. However, every country needs to focus on making new achievements in agriculture, too, which can often benefit the whole world. Like China, for example, whose development of hybrid rice has greatly increased rice production in many other countries. And, of course, global conflict must be eliminated. And don't forget that we as individuals can also make a difference: buy food that supports the environment, and never waste food.
Host: David Bond, thank you very much. Just a quick message to our listeners: you can find more information on world hunger on the FAO website …
Post listening
Task 1: Work in pairs. Discuss the following questions and then share your answers in class. Use a table like the one below to help you organise your thoughts.
1. What are all possible causes of world hunger that you can think of
2. What can people and countries do to help alleviate these causes
Possible cause Possible solution
droughts;floods;
poverty;war
With droughts, we can invent new forms of agriculture that do not rely so much on water, and
drought-resistant crops; floods can often be prevented by the building of dams and levees;
poverty is best solved through economic development and programmes that give people more opportunities;war may be solved through international negotiation.
World Food Day(WFD) was created by the FAO in 1979. It is celebrated in more than 150 countries, rasing awareness and knowledge of the problems and causes behind world hunger and poverty.
Task 2: Brainstorm ideas for some school activities that celebrate World Food Day.
