Imagine this situation: you live on a tiny island off the north coast of Australia, and you and most of your friends have never even been to Darwin. You all love dancing: any style, any time, but especially at the local disco, where hundreds of local kids gather every weekend.
Then one day, on a dusty basketball court, your group is doing an up-beat version of the Sirtaki dance from the 1964 movie Zorba the Greek. Someone films it, and the film is up-loaded to the Internet. It’s so funny that suddenly you are a sensation, with thousands of hits in the first few days. Before long, you are receiving invitations to perform all over Australia.
This did happen in 2007 to the Chooky Dancers, an Indigenous dance group who live on Elcho Island, off the coast of Arnhem Land. Since then, the energetic and very amusing Chookies have performed at numerous comedy festivals and cultural events all around Aus-tralia. They have also appeared in a full-length feature film. These young Yolngu men absorb and then reinvent dance moves from everywhere: from traditional Indigenous dance styles and ideas, to techno and hip hop, kung fu and Bollywood.
And now the Chookies have gone global. In early 2011, they travelled out of Australia for the first time. They went to Beijing, the capital of China, where they performed their particular brand of dance to a Chinese TV audience of probably close to one billion.
The Chookies’ act was part of one of China’s biggest annual shows — the Spring Festival Gala. Over the years the festival has hosted a huge variety of act s from all around the world and of every imaginable style and content. Even so, the audience had seen nothing like the Chooky Dancers, who began, as usual, with a traditional Yolngu dance, before breaking out into their signature Zorba. The Chinese were totally won over.
It’s a great international, multicultural, outback youth success story—an Indigenous Australian dance troupe performs a techno version of a Greek dance on Chinese TV!

As for the choice of jobs, girls and boys as young as seven have preference with sex differences in a new study. Girls choose jobs based on care and love, while boys choose jobs based on money and power.
Professor Laura Scholes and Dr Sarah McDonald surveyed 332 Year Three students from 14 Australian schools. They found that the top jobs for boys included sports and STEM(science, technology, engineering and mathematics)related work, while girls, on the other hand, wanted to be teachers or nurses.
Professor Scholes said the influence of sex stereotypes(刻板印象)on such choices begins in early childhood. “Bright pink toys for girls and blue toys for boys are sold in stores around the world.” she said, “In the boys’ section, you'll find science, construction and warfare toys—perhaps a robot or a telescope. In the girls' section, you'll see toys related to dolls, kitchens, makeup, jewellery and crafts.”
“This results in lower numbers of girls taking STEM subjects at school. In turn, this means fewer women are going to work in the sciences.” Professor Scholes's comments came as women make up only two percent of the STEM workforce, with the biggest gap in the highest-paid jobs of computer science and engineering.
In Australia, some brands(品牌)are no longer designing their toys just for boys or girls. Danish toy giant Lego said its products were mainly used by boys, but it promised to work to remove sex preference from its toys and instead market them for both sexes last week after a global study found that 71% of boys were afraid of being made fun of for playing with toys marketed at girls.
28. Which of the following jobs do the girls not tend to choose
A. Teachers B. Programmers C. Dressers D. Nurses
29. What causes fewer girls to choose STEM subjects according to Professor Scholes
A. The effect of sex stereotypes.
B. Their desire to be teachers or nurses.
C. Their hobbies based on care and love.
D. Low-paid jobs concerned with sciences.
30. What does the underline word “remove” in the last paragraph mean
A. take away B. try out C. leave alone D. pick up
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The importance of early childhood education in shaping career choices.
B. The influence of sex stereotypes in toys on children's career preferences.
C. The reasons why there are fewer girls in STEM fields.
D. The global success of Lego toys and their marketing strategies.

Lord Rees and Neil deGrasse Tyson pour cold water on Elon Musk’s plans to transfer a large human population to Mars at a World Government Summit panel in Dubai. The billionaire’s plans to send humans to Mars are a “dangerous vision”, according to Britain’s chief astrophysicist Lord Martin Rees.
Back in 2016, Musk outlined his vision of building a colony on Mars “in our lifetimes” — with the first rocket sending humans to the Red Planet by 2025. For many years the company used an image of the Martian surface being terraformed (地球化) in its promotional material . However, a NASA-sponsored study published in 2018 dismissed these plans as impossible with today’s technology. Recently Musk has tweeted that he believed it was “possible to make a self-sustaining city on Mars by 2050, if we start in five years”.
Lord Rees said, “The only reason for humans to go to space would be for adventure. To live on Mars is not going to be easy. Mars has an unpleasant environment.” “The idea of Elon Musk to have a million people settle on Mars is a dangerous idea. Living on Mars is no better than living on the South Pole or the tip of Mount Everest. If you want to call Mars home, you need to terraform Mars, turn it into Earth.” American astrophysicist and science educator Neil de Grasse Tyson added. However, the size of this task was much larger than actively attempting to prevent the initial catastrophe on Earth, Dr. Tyson explained: “It is so much easier to make Earth return to Earth again rather than terraforming Mars.”
“There is no force on Earth as powerful as the exploration of space that impacts our thoughts and ambitions. Thinking about the future is half of what drives the future. Space will always remain as an inspiration for young people and it is an area we need to support,” Lord Rees said.
32. What was Musk’s attitude to the vision of building a colony on Mars by 2050
A. Skeptical. B. Optimistic. C. Dismissive. D. Cautious.
33. What makes terraforming Mars a difficult task, according to Dr. Tyson
A. Unpleasant environment in Mars. B. Conflict with NASA’s plan.
C. Lack of advanced technology. D. Extreme weather in the South Pole.
34. What is the main message conveyed by Lord Rees in the last paragraph
A. Human development relies on thinking about the future of the earth.
B. Mars colonization should be a top priority for young people.
C. Space exploration has a huge impact on human development.
D. Young people should be more supportive of space exploration.
35. What is the best title of this passage
A. Elon Musk Thinks Big About Colonizing Mars.
B. Experts Dismiss Elon Musk’s Mars Colonization Plans.
C. The Fruitless Exploration of Human Settlement on Mars.
D. The Challenges of Establishing Human Habitats on Mars.

Lucy loved painting and had a dream of becoming an artist. However, she was very shy and never showed her paintings to anyone except her best friend, Mia. Mia often encouraged Lucy to share her work, but Lucy always shook her head nervously. “What if they laugh at me ” she would say.
One day, their school announced an art competition. The winning artworks would be displayed at the city’s annual art fair. Mia’s eyes lit up when she heard about it. “Lucy, you have to enter!” she said excitedly. But Lucy hesitated, her stomach twisting in knots. “I’m not good enough,” she muttered.
Mia wouldn’t give up. “I’ll help you,” she said. Over the next few weeks, Mia spent her free time encouraging Lucy, giving her ideas, and boosting her confidence. Finally, Lucy completed her painting—a beautiful depiction of a sunset over a meadow. “It’s perfect!” Mia said, beaming.
The day of the competition arrived, and Lucy submitted her painting, her hands trembling. When the results were announced, Lucy’s painting won second place. Lucy was thrilled but also terrified about having her painting displayed at the fair. “I don’t think I can go,” she told Mia.

第一节
One possible version:
Ball Game Fun: Try It!
For the upcoming school sports festival, I highly recommend including table tennis as one of the activities.
For one thing, with numerous remarkable advantages, not only does it significantly enhance our reaction speed and concentration, but it also serves as an excellent means for us to build up our body. For another, it’s quite workable/practical for the school sports festival, considering that there are many ping-pong tables available on campus. Moreover, table tennis is suitable for players of all skill levels and popular among our students. Hence, organizing competitions would be relatively effortless.
I firmly believe that table tennis would be an excellent option, bringing substantial benefits to the students.
第二节
One possible version:
Mia grabbed Lucy’s hand and smiled warmly. “You’ve come this far, Lucy. You have to see how amazing your work is!” she said. Reluctantly, Lucy agreed, and they headed to the art fair together. When they arrived, Lucy spotted her painting displayed among the others. A small crowd had gathered around it, admiring the vibrant colors and the peaceful feeling it conveyed. “Who painted this ” someone asked. Before Lucy could react, Mia proudly said, “She did!” and gently pushed Lucy forward.
Lucy stood before her painting at the fair, her heart pounding. People smiled at her and praised her work. “It’s beautiful!” a woman said. “You have real talent.” Hearing those words, Lucy felt her fear melt away, replaced by a warm sense of pride. She glanced at Mia, who gave her a thumbs-up. At that moment, Lucy realized she could chase her dream—and that she wasn’t alone.

Text 10
The village of Woolpit in Suffolk, England has a strange legend — about two mysterious children whose skin was green. The tale is even stranger when you consider that it might be true. The story started during the 12th century when villagers came across two young children — a girl and a boy with green skin. Their words made no sense and they were acting nervously. (18) The children were taken to the home of a wealthy man, who cared for them. (19) At first, they refused to eat. The children lived with the man for some time, and eventually started eating. After they did so, their skin lost its green color. The children also slowly learned to speak English, and were then asked where they had come from. They said they came from “the land of St. Martin”. They had been looking after sheep when they heard the sound of bells and followed the sound to where they were found. The boy later died but the girl grew up, married, and had a child. So, who were the strange green children The most likely explanation is that they were the children of Flemish immigrants whose parents had died. Perhaps they spoke only their native language of Flemish, which would explain why people thought their words made no sense. The green color of their skin was probably caused by a lack of nutritious food. (20)
