The article has sparked great attention on the internet. Many people comfort us and offer us some solutions, but they have no practical effect. Just when I was extremely anxious, a reply caught my attention and suggested that I apply for an emergency passport from the state office. I immediately took action.
The E-mail from the state office said the passport agency does same-day printing for emergencies. Donato and I hugged each other and breathed a sigh of relief that our wedding could proceed as scheduled. The situation went smoothly, and we received our emergency passport the next day. Donato and I appeared at the wedding as scheduled, along with Chickie. After listening to our experience, our family and friends were all amazed by it. This was an unforgettable experience which made me understand that there are always more solutions than difficulties.华中师大一附中2024—2025学年度上学期期中检测

The pond is silent — until the first cry: “Found something!” A swimmer ducks into the water. She emerges, fist first, holding a pair of bright blue children’s swimming goggles (护目镜) . These are passed to a kayaker (划艇者), who waves them overhead, like a prize.
Over the next hour, the team of 15 — all over age 65, all women — hunts for trash across Mares Pond, a 28-acre kettle hole on Cape (海角) Cod, at depths of up to 8 feet.
When the team returns to shore, the women are smiling and laughing cracking jokes about the dive and their haul. “We didn’t even know what it was,” one swimmer said with a giggle, referring to the blueberry cheesecake-flavored electronic cigarette they found. “We have to ask a young person.”
These are the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG). Part conservation organization, part social club, the group’s existence is owed to a moment of spontaneity (自发性) by Susan Baur, a retired psychologist. She had begun swimming in ponds on the cape as a safer alternative to the ocean. But she found there was much stuff like golf balls and beer cans in the ponds and they were piling up. In 2017, she rounded up several friends and together they cleared a sizable amount of litter from a pond. Soon others joined them. However, the group is merely for ladies over the age of 65.
“Over 65, if you’re healthy enough to do what we’re doing, it is the age of gratitude,” She says. “You are so grateful that you can still do this. You’re just grateful anyway, grateful for the trees and grateful for clean water.” She notes that “women over 65 tend to feel the limitation of aging.” They lose power and social standing, she says. Part of the goal of OLAUG is to demonstrate that older women, working as a team, can do a lot more than people might think. “We have just swum farther than we’ve ever swum. We’ve lifted more than we’ve ever lifted. We’ve seen stuff that we’ve never seen. And we’ve done good,” says Baur. “We come back with our hearts beating.”
4. What are the swimmers doing in the pond
A. Finding treasures. B. Swimming in a race.
C. Playing games. D. Cleaning garbage.
5. What does the underlined word “haul” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Diving skills. B. Rescue operation.
C. Items collected during a search. D. Discoveries under the sea.
6. Why did Susan Baur form the group OLAUG
A. To provide help and care for each other.
B. To remove trash and display their capabilities.
C. To promote pond swimming as a safer alternative.
D. To organize swimming events and improve their skills.
7. What is the significance of the “old lady” identity for the group
A. It helps to attract public attention.
B. It highlights their weakness as older women.
C. It distinguishes them from other environmental groups.
D. It emphasizes gratitude and physical ability at older age.
C
As psychologists (心理学家) have long recognised, we humans cope with negative things by employing psychological defences. These often take the form of self-serving biases (偏见) , that is, we tend to owe other people’s successes to good luck, while seeing our own good results as a sign of born talent. Another example is the ‘better-than-average’ effect, in which case we think we’re better than most others at various skills from driving to maths.
Getting defensive when we’re criticised, or when we make a mistake, is yet another of these self-protective mechanisms (机制). As the politicians so often say: “mistakes were made, but not by me”.
So when you give someone negative feedback (反馈) or you criticise them or their beliefs, you are - perhaps unconsciously - threatening their psychological defences. By forcing them to recognise how they’ve mistaken, you’re likely to trigger extremely uncomfortable social emotions, such as a shame, guilt or embarrassment, or scary thoughts of rejection or loss of status. A way for people to avoid these uncomfortable feelings and thoughts is to get defensive, to deny they did anything wrong, or to engage in the mental gymnastics needed to save face.
Support for the social and moral aspects of defensiveness comes from a study by psychologists at Australia’s University of Flinders in 2020. The researchers showed that volunteers’ defensiveness (about past mistakes or possible moral guilt) was strengthened if they’d just had an experience of being socially rejected - thus making them more mentally weak. Contrarily, the volunteers acted less defensively if they’d had an earlier opportunity to demonstrate their moral values, which would have made them feel more secure about their moral standing.
One practical point from all this is that when you’re giving negative feedback, it pays to consider the effect it may have on the other person’s self-confidence. Therefore, focus your criticism on what they did wrong, not on their personality or character. You can also take some of the sting out by concentrating on how their mistake can be fixed or how they can improve next time, that way they’re less likely to take things so personally.
8. Why do people get so defensive when criticised
A. To escape severe punishment.
B. To refuse future improvement.
C. To avoid uncomfortable emotions.
D. To demonstrate their being delicate.
9. What did the study by psychologists at the University of Flinders in 2020 find
A. Social rejection increases defensiveness.
B. Expressing moral values increases defensiveness.
C. Giving advice on fixing one’s mistake hurts his confidence.
D. Focusing criticism on one’s personality decreases his defensiveness.
10. Which of the following is a proper time for giving negative feedback
A. One has just made a blood donation. B. One has just received a job rejection.
C. One has just been beaten in a debate. D. One has just failed in an exam.
11. What is the main idea of the article
A. People should avoid giving negative feedback to others.
B People often use psychological defenses to cope with criticism.
C. The University of Flinders conducted a study on social rejection.
D. The better-than-average’ effect is a common psychological defense.
D
In the past few years, consumers have become more aware of the importance of sustainability in fashion. They want to know how products are made to ensure that their purchases aren’t negatively impacting the environment. This shift in consumer behavior has made traceable (可追踪的) cotton very popular with fashion brands, as it ensures the cotton comes from farms that advocate for sustainable practices — and, in turn, allows the brands to market their products as such. To meet this demand, farmers are increasingly performing sustainable practice — things like promoting biodiversity and minimizing harmful pesticides.
Moving a farm to sustainable agriculture can be challenging, however. “Traceability covers all activities during the growing season through to harvest, which largely relies on date collection,” says Raymond Daniels, manager for BASF’s agricultural solutions. Without using technology, this data process can become troublesome. Farmers are not experts, says Daniels, and often don’t have the time needed to capture everything. To ensure the traceability of their cotton, more farmers are turning to BASF’s e3 cotton program.
Aside from data tracking, farmers have the added benefit. “Once the cotton is harvested, we take the Permanent Bale ID (issued by the USDA) and attach that to the data captured in our platform,” says Daniels. “we can trace everything back to the field in which it was grown with the ID.” When brands know the cotton they are buying is from a sustainable farm, they are often willing to pay more for it.
Mark and Cali Noland have seen the benefits firsthand. The traceability provided by the e3 program has opened up new opportunities for them—including direct partnerships with clothing manufacturers. “In the past, we’ve been totally at the mercy of what the market is doing,” Cali says. Now, by employing technology, they’re able to negotiate a price that reflects the actual value of their sustainably-produced cotton. “With our cotton, we’ve been able to make individual relationships with some fashion brands who want to know what practices you are doing on the farm for the quality of their product,” says Cali.
12. Why do farmers tend to adopt sustainable agriculture
A. Because consumers favor the cotton products.
B. Because sustainable practices guarantee the quality.
C. Because farmers want to satisfy the market requirements.
D. Because the fashion brands grow environment-conscious.
13. What is BASF’s e3 cotton program aimed at
A. Exploring new market for cotton farmers.
B. Sparing farmers the laborious work on land.
C. Adjusting the process of agricultural production.
D. Providing traceable information of signed cotton.
14. What benefits do the farmers gain through e3 program
A. Easy network access. B. Cooperation with manufacturers.
C. Independent pricing. D. Output expansion.
15. What is the suitable title for the text
A. The Rise of Traceable Cotton: Technology Enables Sustainable Farming
B. The Sustainable Agriculture: Unavoidable Changes Are on the Way
C. BAST’s e3 Program: Cooperation Boosts Confidence
D. The Greener Fashion: Quality Always Comes First

My morning routine has looked very different over the years. As a freelancer (自由职业者), I don’t have a set time I need to wake up. So, it’s easy to sleep in until 10 A.M. then pull my laptop into bed and start work the moment I open my eyes. ____16____
I had yet to find the morning routine that worked for me until I saw The 5 AM Club and decided to see what it was about. ____17____ The core message is his advice to wake up at 5 A.M. following his 20/20/20 rule. That is: spend the first hour of your day doing 20 minutes of exercise, 20 minutes of reflection, and 20 minutes of learning.
____18____ I set my alarm for a painfully early 5 A.M. to see whether it’s worth the reputation.
On my first morning, I got all the wisdom found in Sharma’s book and felt ready to apply it to my own life. 20 minutes of exercise warmed my body up, distracting me away from social media or TV series. After 20 minutes of reflection, I worked out a daily to-do list. ____19____ Getting up at 5 A.M. helped me focus on the things that mattered to me most. One hour a day doesn’t sound like much when you want to improve a skill, especially when you only spend 20 minutes of that hour reading and learning. ____20____ If you aim to improve a skill by just 1% each day, over a year, these days will pile up and you’ll have improved by more than 300%.
Of course, you can customize the routine to suit your life and goals. The point is that you persist in getting up early and spending an hour bettering yourself each day.
A. We all have a limited mental capacity.
B. But Sharma argues that a small amount of daily progress can add up.
C. The book is the bestseller by Robins Sharma, an advisor of Microsoft.
D. The routine is said to transform your productivity, health, and well-being.
E. But I want to be the happiest, healthiest, most productive version of myself.
F. At first, I didn’t have faith in the book for I was used to my old morning routine.
G. We may have the intention to read a chapter of a personal development book each day.

Sitting down at a restaurant in New York, my fiancé (未婚夫), Donato and I enjoyed a moment of calm. It had been a crazy long time getting everything ready for our wedding. Donato had Italian family, and our 100 guests would be flying from the US and around the globe to Italy, including London, Melbourne and Tokyo. There would be a huge ceremony in Roma three days away.
Our flights were booked our passports were up to date, and we had filed the paperwork registering our intention to get married.
“We’d better get back to Chickie,” I said after we’d eaten. Chickie was our one-year-old pet dog who we loved like a baby. I liked sharing my daily life with the lovely dog on my social media. My daily posts received many likes, making Chickie a local online influencer.
Arriving home, I got ready for taking a bath while Donato checked on Chickie, Suddenly, I heard screaming coming from the living room.
“Chickie! No!” Donato was repeating.
“What is going on ” I thought, racing from the bathroom.
“She ate my passport!” he cried.
He’d left it on the coffee table after getting all the travel documents together. As I opened the chewed booklet, I saw that his personal information page was shredded (撕成条).
Chickie clearly felt guilty. Her tail was between her legs and she was sending us forlorn glances.
We couldn’t board any plane without the passport. I googled the official website of the local state office, and found out a new passport couldn’t be printed in less than 5 days. “We’ve been planning this wedding for a year and a half,” I said to Donato. “Cancelling is not an option.”
