Many seniors feel pressured to go straight from high school to college, but Camden Olson, who graduated from high school in the US last year, didn’t give in. She decided to spend a gap year — taking a year off before college — raising a guide dog for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. The non-profit company provides trained guide dogs to blind and visually-impaired (视力障碍的) people. “This is definitely something I’ve always dreamed to do.” Olson said.
Olson is using her time to follow a passion she’s had since 7th grade. For years, she kept an eye on guide dog services until she came across the opportunity at Guiding Eyes. Olson’s volunteer work centers around Derby, a one-year-old black dog. “My job is to raise him to be well-behaved and socialized,” she said. “Guide dogs can’t be distracted. They go everywhere with their visually-impaired owner. They give a blind person a lot of support, too.”
When Derby celebrates his own graduation, Olson will have to say goodbye to him, “There is no doubt that there will be tears, but, if he passes the test, I will be so glad for him to become a real working dog,” she said.
In fact, she’ll be attending Princeton University soon and she is thinking about majoring in biology. “I think I’m already so much more mature than I was,” she said. “So many kids come back from gap years a lot more focused and prepared.”
4. Why did Camden Olson decide to spend her gap year working for Guiding Eyes
A. Because her parents talked her into doing it.
B. Because many of her peers had already chosen to do so.
C. Because it had been her dream for a long time.

A. Can’t be distracted.
B. Be well-behaved and easy-going.
C. Know how to play some tricks for their owners.
D. Give their visually-impaired owner support.
6. How did Olson feel when she said goodbye to Derby
A. Only happy. B. Sad but glad.
C. Sad and regretful. D. Nervous and disappointed.
7. What does Olson think about the idea of a gap year

B. Whether it’s good or not depends on the person.
C. Its negative side outweighs its positive side.
D. It makes sure of a student’s success at college.

The sun’s “sneeze” arrived as predicted! China’s National Center for Space Weather (NCSW) forecast geomagnetic (地磁的) activities to occur from March 24 to 26. According to geomagnetic monitoring data, Earth experienced a geomagnetic storm that lasted for 12 hours on March 25.
Geomagnetic storms happen due to coronal mass ejections (CMEs, 日冕物质抛射) during which some material from the sun’s outer layer makes its way to Earth. They can shoot out a huge amount of material and carry a strong magnetic field, which causes major changes in Earth’s magnetic environment.
“Geomagnetic storms can disrupt (干扰) radio waves and cause problems for ground communication and satellite signals,” Professor Cai Zheng from Tsinghua University told Xinhua. This can influence the accuracy of navigation (导航) systems and the quality of signals for phones and satellite TV. Strong geomagnetic storms can also impact power transmission systems, even resulting in power outages (停电) .
To mitigate the effects of geomagnetic storms, it’s recommended to power off unnecessary electronic devices, especially high-powered ones, to prevent damage or fire. Critical equipment and infrastructure (基础设施) also require special protective measures, including regular checks and data backups, noted Guangming Daily.
Intense geomagnetic activity can also affect the migration (迁徙) and navigation abilities of animals. For instance, homing pigeons rely on Earth’s magnetic field for navigation during flight. Geomagnetic storms can affect their ability to find their way, making it difficult for them to return home.
Despite these disruptions, what about the impact of such storms on humans Shortly after recent geomagnetic storm, the topic of “geomagnetic storm, the topic of “geomagnetic storms and sleep” trended on Sina Weibo with some internet users claiming that they had trouble sleeping. However, it was just a convenient excuse. “Geomagnetic storms usually don’t influence human health,” Zong Weiguo at China Meteorological Administration told Science and Technology Daily.
Not only do geomagnetic storms have minimal (极小的) impact on humans, they also deliver an unexpected gift — auroras (极光) . During such a storm, charged particles (粒子) from space are guided by Earth’s magnetic field into the atmosphere. When these particles hit atoms in the upper atmosphere, they release energy, causing the glowing lights known as auroras. In the early morning of March 25, auroras appeared in Genhe in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region and Mohe in Heilongjiang.
8. What causes geomagnetic storms
A. Magnetic disturbance within Earth’s core.
B. Solar winds interacting with satellite signals.
C. Material escaping from the sun’s outer atmosphere.
D Electromagnetic disruption from human activities.
9. What might happen during geomagnetic storms
A. Mobile phones power off easily. B. Animals migrate more frequently.
C. People find it difficult to sleep. D. Satellite signals become unstable.
10. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Strengthen. B. Reduce. C. Change. D. Monitor.
11. What is the main purpose of the article
A. To discuss the causes of geomagnetic storms.
B. To report some recent geomagnetic storms.
C. To make readers learn about geomagnetic storms.
D. To explain the scientific facts behind auroras.

I am a big laugher. I’ve been told that even in a room of a thousand people, you can always hear me laughing over the crowd. For me, laughter is the ultimate form of embodied joy. And by “embodied”, I mean that my whole body is involved when I laugh. On the inside, it’s like a bubbling fountain of joy spilling out all over the place.
But what is joy, anyway
Life can be terrible, but if you decide to follow the sound of the joy-fountain, you will find joy showing up in all kinds of places: pets playfully bouncing around, kindness, or even in nothingness.
How can joy be found A friend moved into a new apartment and needed some help, so I helped him. Afterwards, he was obviously so much happier and at case. I noticed that playing even a small part in his happiness brought me great joy, and I took a moment to let this feeling of embodied joy in. We can practice letting joy in by noticing how it feels to smile. Where does your body light up when you smile When I smile, it makes me want to take a deep breath, and I notice my shoulders and belly relaxing. When I embody caring and loving, it feels great!
Sadly, many of us are unaware of joy, or suspicious of it. Maybe you arc afraid to open up to joy, or maybe you are so unfamiliar with what joy feels like that you ignore or resist it when it comes knocking. No one, other than you, owns your happiness, but you might unknowingly block feelings or experiences that help you embody joy. The fact is that when you can’t embody joy, you miss out on one of life’s essential vitamins.
Want more joy Don’t be afraid to look silly. Silliness helps us take things less personally. It helps us see the world the way a kid does. When we can find more joy in the smalls of everyday life, we can embody happiness, rather than just pursuing it.
12. How is the topic of joy introduced at the beginning of the passage
A. By highlighting a joyful experience.
B. By stressing the importance of laughing.
C. By presenting an ultimate form of satisfaction.
D. By sharing the author’s understanding of joy.
13. What might be the author’s advice on finding joy
A Taking a deep breath. B. Smiling to your friends.
C. Doing small acts of kindness. D. Reflecting on nothingness.
14. What might be the reason for many of us missing joy
A. That many of us refuse it on purpose.
B. That many of us are insensitive to joy.
C. That many of us lack life’s essential vitamins.
D. That many of us are likely to take joy for granted.
15. What is the best title of the text
A. Life is the creation of joy B. A happy man always laughs last
C. People are always unaware of joy D. Happy people are happy in childhood

Jen and her brother, Rick, live on the west coast of Australia; swimming and surfing have become a routine for them. They see all kinds of fish, such as lovely dolphins, huge whales and even fierce sharks.
Last weekend, Jen was on beach, standing on the hot sand. Enormous waves crashed along mile after mile of beautiful sand. Rick was happy because he had a new surfboard Rick’s favorite sport is surfing.
“I’m going to look at the fish underwater,” Jen waved to Rick, putting her blue rubber fins on her feet. Then she put the yellow mask and snorkel on her face.
The water was warm. Jen took a big breath and dived down and down. She could see fish and plants through her mask and the fish swam all around her. Jen observed or touched the tall or small plants growing on the rocks. Some were soft and some rough. Fish live in the plants and rocks.
Jen was swimming past a large rock when she saw a blue dolphin keep still.
Trapped in a net around the rock, the dolphin wasn’t able to swim up to get air. Moving its fins painfully, the poor blue dolphin was dying slowly.
Immediately, Jen pulled the net from the rocks and then freed the dolphin. It moved its fins quickly and swam up. It took a breath of air. The blue dolphin looked down at Jen gratefully, swimming away.
On the way home, she told her brother about her adventure with the blue dolphin with great interest.
The following day it was still hot, and more people swam in the sea, playing and laughing. The hot sun shone, and the water was silver and blue.
Some lifeguards watched the swimmers closely as they stared at the sea in the distance. Suddenly, one shouted loudly, “Shark! Quick!” Hungry, a shark was swimming quickly towards the swimming people. Everybody was frightened and began to swim towards the beach.
