Rosa was spending the day with her family at Thetis Lake when she heard a man crying out for help. The lake has a sudden drop-off, and the man was desperately trying to keep himself, his wife, and their son afloat. Rosa handed off her 4–month–old daughter to her mother and dashed down the hill and into the water.
Without thinking, Rosa dove into the water and swam hard for the family. When she reached them, they were so panicked that they repeatedly pushed her under the water, but Rosa didn’t give up. She tried to remember her lifeguard training—which was a long time ago when she was a teenager. Rosa was aiming for the drop-off ledge (平台), hoping to get the adults to a spot where they could touch the bottom. Yet as she approached the drop-off, Rosa couldn’t gather the strength to pull them all up. That’s when she heard the bystanders calling out encouragement from the shore. They responded by forming a human chain to drag Rosa and the family to shore!
Once they were safely out of the water, the family expressed their gratitude to Rosa and the others while gasping for breath. Rosa was relieved that those long–ago lessons returned to her when she needed them most, especially because she was never formally taught how to rescue groups! The heroic mom has now made it her mission to improve the safety of Thetis Lake. She’s requested more signage about the water drop–off and is campaigning to get lifeguards at beaches in the region.
Rosa insists she was just at the right place at the right time and says anyone would have done what she did, but we know a hero when we see one! Thank goodness this tough mother was there when that family needed her.
24. Why did Rosa dash into the lake
A. To swim with her mother. B. To rescue a drowning family.
C. To show her bravery to her daughter. D. To teach a stranger how to swim safely.
25. What lifted Rosa up when she approached the drop–off
A. Several swimmers’ timely appearance.
B. Her mother’s suggestions of being calm.
C. A lifeguard’s immediate response to danger.
D. Some strangers’ encouragement from the shore.
26. What made Rosa relieved
A. Her family was saved at last. B. She learned how to save groups.
C. Her former training worked in time. D. She was highly honored for her kindness.
27. Which of the following can be used to describe Rosa
A. Sensitive and curious. B. Cautious and patient.
C. Determined and flexible. D. Courageous and modest.

Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places – and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.
Don’t forget the clock – or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turning on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plants can easily makes us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
28. The text is especially helpful for those who care about ____.
A. their home comforts B. their body shape
C. house buying D. healthy diets
29. A home environment in blue can help people ____.
A. digest food better B. reduce food intake
C. burn more calories D. regain their appetites
30. What are people advised to do at mealtimes
A. Eat quickly. B. Play fast music
C. Use smaller spoons D. Turn down the lights
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Is Your House Making You Fat B.Ways of Serving Dinner
C.Effects of Self-Consciousness D.Is Your Home Environment Relaxing
D
A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off — if it is milked from a cow at night.
Researchers have discovered that "night milk" contains more melatonin (褪黑激素),which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.
The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.
Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.
Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.
While the effect of cows’ milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.
Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content(钙含量) which helps people to relax.
Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk(脱脂牛奶)as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.
32.According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk .
A. started sleep more easily B. were more anxious
C. were less active D. woke up later
33.Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text
A. It’s been tested on mice for ten times. B. It can make people more energetic.
C. It exists in milk in great amount. D. It’s used in sleeping drugs.
34.What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Night Milk and Sleep B. Fat, Sugar and Health
C. An Experiment on Mice D. Milk Drinking and Health
35.How does the author support the theme of the text
A. By giving examples. B. By stating arguments.

A Few Tips for Self-Acceptance
We all want it… to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach. 36 Here’s a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.
● 37 Do not follow the people who make you feel not-good-enough. Why do you follow them Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs Know that your life is your own; you are the only you in this world.
● Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made. We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. 38 You will make mistakes, time and time again. Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate (有同情心) response "That didn’t go as planned. But, I tried my best."
● Recognize all of your strengths. Write them down in a journal. Begin to train your brain to look at strength before weakness. List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today. 39
● Now that you’ve listed your strengths, list your imperfections. Turn the page in your journal. Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don’t feel good enough. Now, read these words back to yourself. 40 Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements. See how awesome you are
A. Feeling upset again
B. Where do you start
C. Nothing is too small to celebrate.
D. Remember, you are only human.
E. Set an intention for self-acceptance.
F. Stop comparing yourself with others.
G. When does the comparison game start

It was a sunny day. Anabia, an 11-year-old girl, was excited because today was the drawing contest at her school. Anabia was really good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art. Her teachers would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, colouring and much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anabia had worked really hard and wanted to win it. But there was one thing that was disturbing her today.
Recently, a new girl, Rida, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anabia was. Miss Saima, the art teacher, helped Rida and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Rida was also considered among the best artists in grade six.
Rida was quick, smart and intelligent. Anabia became jealous of Rida’s intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to beat.
So that day, for the art competition, Miss Saima took all the students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important instructions. Anabia’s roll number was 16, while Rida was number 17. The bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest. Miss Saima wrote on the board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat.
Anabia knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels (油画棒). Anabia started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. Immediately, she got up to tell Miss Saima.
Miss Saima was disappointed at Anabia’s carelessness and told her that she could not help her, as it was her responsibility to be prepared for the contest that had been announced a week in advance. Anabia’s best friends were also there, but none of them offered to share anything, much to Anabia’s surprise and disappointment.

第二节
Anabia’ s eyes were filled with tears. She found something hard to swallow. To her sadness, she lost the art competition before she even started. Just then, a box of oil painting sticks appeared in front of her eyes. “If you don’t mind, I think we can share these,” Rida, the girl who she once hoped to beat, extended a helping hand. Anabia hesitated, but quickly they were both devoted to their works. Time flied in the blink of an eye. After handing in their works, Anabia reached out her hand.
Then Rida held Anabia’s hand, and the two girls waited for the winners to be announced. “I’m sorry. I once became jealous of your intelligence and hoped to beat you,” Anabia apologized sincerely. Rida hugged her delightedly and said she hoped they would be friends in the future. It seemed that who would be the winner was not so important at the moment. The sun shone warm sunlight into the room and also shone on the hearts of the two girls. The world always prepares surprise for the people who like the sun. They both got the first place.

M:Hi, can I speak with Mr. Johnson,please
W:He's out with our son. He'll be back later on tonight. Can I take a message
Text 2
M:By the way, may I have my breakfast in my room I'm not an early riser.
W:Of course, sir. Just ask for room service, and they'll see to it that you wake up to enjoy your order at any time.
Text 3
W:Hi, Jimmy. You're here early. You seldom come to work before 8:00.
M:My dog woke me up at 6:00 today. He usually waits until 7:00, but I guess he wanted his breakfast early today.
Text 4
W:May I have a word with you
M:You've caught me at a bad time. I am writing a report and have to finish it within an hour.
W: You really like leaving things to the last minute,
Text 5
W:Jim, I can't go to the theatre with you tonight.
M:Why not, Mary
W: I have to make dinner for my family, because my mother is sick.

Text 6
W: Well, I really love to travel. Uh, every year I go somewhere new. I never go to the same country twice. I think my favorite part is probably trying new foods.
M: Yeah, but the best thing about traveling, I find, is the people that you meet.
W:Oh, that's true. I've met some great people. Um, well, see, I try to travel by train rather than by car or by plane. And that way you always meet lots of new and interesting people.
Text 7
W:We're going to do something different for Thanksgiving this year. Instead of going to Mom's house, we've decided to all go out to dinner.
M:Oh, okay. I like having a home-cooked meal, though, and we go to Mom's every year. Why did you both decide to go to a restaurant
W:Mom says that she's tired of cooking everything.
M:Well, we can go over and help her out. Or we can just have it at my house instead. My kids would love to help cook for their grandma.
W:You can talk to her yourself, then. She seems to have made up her mind to go to a restaurant this year.
M:Okay, I'll give her a call. Have you talked to Dad, yet
W:No, but I think he wants to go out, too.
Text 8
W:Hi! We're back! Anybody home Phillip Susan
M:Hey, what's that
W:Oh, it's a note from Claudia. It says “ Hi! There's a cool new restaurant near my office. Let's have dinner there together---my treat! The name is Giovanni’s, and it's on West Houston Street between MacDougal's and Sullivan's. You can't miss it! The traffic is terrible down there. You'd better not drive. Take the subway!"
M:Oh, it sounds like fun. Let's go!
Text 9
W:John, I know that you're interested in all things to do with the environment. Can you tell us something about it
M:Oh, yes, I could think of one or two things that I've tried to do over the last couple of years. I think it's been a couple of years since I got my bicycle out of the garage, and now I use it as much as possible. I use my car less. Last year I drove 10,000 miles , and this year I'm going to do about 10 % fewer miles.
W:OK. Now we're going to talk about food. I know you seldom eat meat. Is this part of being “green”, or something totally different
M: Erm... Yes and no. Looking after animals, I think, is as important as looking after the environment. I mean, they're part of it. So I prefer not to kill animals to eat them.
W: Mm. I think it's true that people all over the world are becoming more aware of the need to look after the planet. Thank you very much.

W: The Gili Islands are three small islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. The islands are popular with tourists. Cars and motorbikes are not allowed, and people get around on foot or by bicycle. There is beautiful ocean life around the islands. People only began to live on the islands in the1970s. Before that, there wasn't much fresh water, and the islands were full of wild animals. Some travelers discovered the islands in the 1980s and tourism began to develop. In 2000, an organization called the Gili Eco Trust was set up to help protect the areas around the islands. From then on , many other organizations have been set up to educate people about problems on the islands, such as waste and overfishing. The islands cannot be reached by plane, so people have to take boats directly from Lombok to get there.
