Firstly, Mohiuddin was looking at global environmental problems with the hope of finding one that his entrepreneurial(企业家的) spirit could deal with. He would finally focus on plastic use, the overreliance on it in society, and the dangers of plastic pollution in the form of microplastic particles(颗粒). In particular, he wanted to find a replacement to one of the most common plastic products used today: the plastic shopping bag.
According to The Better India, he started studying a biodegradable polymer(生物可降解聚合物) that was first formed and researched in the 1980s called PBAT. At the time, it was made with corn and potatoes. After identifying a suitable class of machinery to produce the PBAT bags in Gujarat, his speech on PBAT received nearly $100,000 in seed funding that allowed him to start the project.
“I tried to balance both my studies and the operations of the company—from collecting raw material, helping workers to produce bags, to delivering the products in the market,” Mohiuddin told The Better India. “I used to sleep in a corner in the factory.” Overcoming bankruptcy(破产), university studies, and long-term unfinished orders, Mohiuddin’s startup company finally started to make profits, and today produces almost 500,000 bags per year, with a total revenue of $180,000.
“I am glad I am able to contribute my part. Not having a normal college life can be tiring sometimes, but in the end, it is all worth it. I feel content when I go back to sleep. But much more needs to be done to make India plastic-free, and I will continue to strive for it,” he adds.
24. What is the primary focus of Mohiuddin’s entrepreneurial efforts
A. To lengthen the use of plastic shopping bags.
B. To improve traditional plastic products.

A fin whale body that was washed ashore at San Diego’s Pacific Beach was discovered to have many bite marks from killer whales, which could have contributed to its death, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). At first, NOAA researchers deemed the marks might be from sharks, but further analysis(分析) by experts showed that these were actually rake(耙子) marks, an unusual feature of killer whales, as stated by NOAA spokesperson Michael Milstein.
While it is possible that killer whales played a role in the fin whale’s death, NOAA has not confirmed that they were the definitive cause. Milstein noted that there are documented instances where killer whales have chased fin whales, causing them to beach themselves in attempts to escape. This suggests that killer whales could have influenced the whale’s fate(命运), but there is no certainty that they were the direct cause of death.
Additionally, NOAA reported sightings of a group of about a dozen killer whales along the Southern California coast, including San Diego. Boaters in the area filmed footage of a group of killer whales actively chasing and likely feeding on dolphins near Torrey Pines. This indicates that killer whales are currently active in the area and may take part in various predatory(捕食性的) behaviors.
The fin whale’s body was discovered on December 10. Lifeguards spent the entire day trying to drag the whale back out to sea, but despite their efforts, the body returned to shore at least once. The whale was observed bleeding from its side, and attempts to pull it away using a small boat connected to its tail were unsuccessful. Fin whales, which are the second-largest whale species on Earth after blue whales, are considered endangered and relatively few in number. These whales can weigh up to 100,000 pounds. NOAA highly values public reports regarding stranded(搁浅的) or injured sea animals. NOAA extremely appreciates such reports and encourages the public to provide information on how to report these incidents. NOAA supposes that it is time for all to work together.
28. What does the underlined word “deemed” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Believed. B. Persuaded. C. Complained. D. Forgot.
29. What could killer whales do to cause the possible death of the fin whale
A. Chase it until it beached itself. B. Hit it unexpectedly.
C. Attack it in a group. D. Drag it to the shore.
30. What can we know about killer whales from paragraph 3
A. Their presence is causing concern for locals.
B. They are a new threat to the local ecosystem.
C. They may take part in predatory behaviors.
D. They disappear quickly near Torrey Pines.
31. What is NOAA’s attitude towards public reports
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Worried.
D
Low levels of vitamin(维生素) D could lead to a slower recovery process in children with broken bones, according to research to be presented at a conference this weekend.
“Children need to be given well-balanced diets that include vitamin D to maintain children’s overall health and ensure efficient recovery when injuries occur,” said the study’s senior author, Dr. Jessica McQuerry of the University of Florida.
McQuerry’s team examined data about 166 patients, from babies to 17-year-olds, who had broken a bone between 2015 and 2022. They found that in 61.4 percent of cases, the children had low levels of vitamin D and these children were likely to take significantly longer to recover.
Professor Scarlett McNally, the deputy director of London’s Center for Perioperative Care, said, “Vitamin D helps in many body functions, including repair of bones and tissues. It is a vitamin that helps the body manage calcium(钙) which keeps your bones strong and is needed for muscles to contract. Vitamin D also has a role in immune(免疫) function, helping your body deal with infection and cancer. It also has a role in cell division—essential for tissue repair.”
The study’s authors said that previous studies had focused on how vitamin D can help prevent fractures(骨折), but this new research is making up for the fact that vitamin D for children’s fractures had been largely unexplored up to this point. They recommended testing your child for vitamin D levels if a broken bone is taking a long time to recover.
Vitamin D can be found in a variety of foods. Dairy products, such as milk and cheese, are particularly high in the nutrient, but it is also found in fish, eggs and some vegetables.
Sunlight exposure can help the body absorb vitamin D. “Getting outside and enjoying the fresh air can do wonders for your recovery while also upping vitamin D absorption,” McQuerry said.
32. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The side effects of medicine. B. The functions of vitamin D.
C. The good ways to keep fit. D. The roles of bones and tissues.
33. How does the new research differ from previous studies
A. It uncovers the secret of tasty foods.
B. It focuses on teenage exercise routine.
C. It offers a deep understanding of vitamin D.
D. It provides the cure for broken bones.
34. What do the study’s authors advise parents to do
A. Eat vegetables as much as possible.
B. Ask their family members to work out.
C. Check vitamin D levels of their kids.
D. Refuse dairy products in the supermarket.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Vitamin D Is Important for Children
B. Exploring Nature Plays a Key Role in Life
C. Researchers Find a New Kind of Vitamin
D. Well-balanced Diets Help Teenagers Grow Up

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One Friday in January, I felt a wave of anxiety wash over me as I noticed my students’ disinterest in reading. During silent reading time, I often saw them yawning (打哈欠) or looking blankly (茫然地) at their books. Their lack of enthusiasm was obvious, and it troubled me deeply. I knew the power of a good book and the worlds it could open, and I was determined to make a change. Therefore, I decided to take a brave step to cultivate(培养) a love for books in my classroom.
As I thought of possible solutions, I suddenly remembered my local community library, a place that had always drawn many neighbors to read and connect. The library was always filled with people of all ages lost in their reading, discussing books, and participating in community events. This memory inspired an idea. If a community library could create such a welcoming atmosphere, why couldn’t I create a similar space in my classroom
That very weekend, I set to work. I carefully selected my favorite books from my personal collection, ranging from thrilling adventures to heartwarming tales, and even a few classic novels. I arranged the books neatly on a shelf in a corner of the classroom, placing a soft carpet to create a welcoming reading area, aiming to draw my students into the world of books.
On Monday morning, as my students walked into the classroom, they noticed the new addition. “What’s this, Mr. Johnson ” asked Emily, her eyes widening with curiosity. “This, my dear students, is our very own class library corner,” I announced with a smile. “You can borrow any book you like, at any time. There’s no need for formal check-outs. Just take a book, enjoy it, and bring it back when you’re done.”
Doubtful words filled the room, but I could see a little light of interest. “Really No rules ” questioned Mark, a student. “Well, there is one rule,” I replied. “Treat books with respect and share them with your classmates.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then I invited students to visit the class library corner. With time going by, my efforts seemed to pay off.

W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.

W: Hey, friends! I’ve missed you. Let me tell you about my trip to Mexico this summer. It was the first time that I had left the United States and traveled to a foreign country. I learned useful traveling tips and had an exciting time in a different culture. The first and most important thing I learned was to make sure to apply for a passport months in advance. I got mine right before I was scheduled to leave, because I waited until the last minute! Secondly, if you are flying, be sure to book a plane ticket far ahead of time so you can get a fair price. Thirdly, my another travel tip is to be sure you pack lightly. You will be taking that luggage around with you everywhere, and it gets heavy quickly! Last but not least, I had some great times exploring the local culture. I was trying all the new kinds of food and went to special cultural events, like special dance performances and street festivals. If you follow these tips, I think you’ll have an easy and rewarding experience!

第二节:
参考范文:
Then I invited students to visit the class library corner. Emily was the first to pick up a book, her fingers gently touching the cover of a classic novel. “This book looks interesting,” she exclaimed. Soon more students joined in, hesitantly at first. Then, they picked up their favourite books and settled on the soft carpet with growing enthusiasm. The once skeptical expressions were replaced with interest and excitement. To my relief, the classroom, once filled with bored sighs during silent reading, was now characterized by quiet anticipation and shared discoveries.
With time going by, my efforts seemed to pay off. The library corner became the most popular spot in the classroom. Students began to exchange recommendations, discussing their favorite characters and plot twists with newfound passion. The transformation was remarkable. My students’ enthusiasm for reading grew so much that they started bringing their own books to add to our collection, proudly contributing to our shared library. Reflecting on this change, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction, knowing that I had successfully fostered a love for reading in my students.
