Love pushes us to overcome various struggles in life! The reason why Keith Limbert learned to drive at his old age was a touching love story, as he was forced to face the lessons for driving a car for his wife. 79-year-old Keith from West Yorkshire put all his efforts into passing the driving test, so that he could take his wife for treatments every day.
Even though he had attempted (尝试) driving when he was 25, he couldn't get through the first two tests. Since then, his loving wife Anne had always driven him around. However, when 58-year-old Anne's health took a turn for the worse, he had to go back to the driving school again.
After Anne had a stroke (中风) in 2015, leaving her in a wheelchair, the couple had to rely on others for their travels. Annoyed with many difficulties, Keith realized that it was time for him to take up learning to drive again. Eventually, it became a necessity when Anne was diagnosed (诊断) with breast cancer in late 2016.
Unfortunately, his wife's condition required regular trips to and from hospital and he was Anne's full-time caregiver. He loved his wife so much that he did his best to pass his driving test on the third attempt. This time, his hard work paid off. Keith passed his driving test at the age of 79, so he could take his poor wife to hospital by himself.
Now this loving couple is leading a comfortable life and on most days, he takes himself to the gym and takes his wife for a coffee.

People who work with their hands may have more job security in 2023 than those who depend on technology. A leading expert in the field of artificial intelligence, Professor Wooldridge, explains that those manual (体力的) workers, such as construction workers, are likely safe from the expansion (扩张) of AI.
“There are lots of examples of the huge range of technologies which will make people's lives better,” Professor Wooldridge said. “But the ‘importance of people’ in carrying out a lot of jobs has been underestimated by modern society. There are an awful lot of jobs which really require human understanding and having a human there is really important. I'm not as pessimistic (悲观的) about AI and jobs as most media has showed.”
However, Professor Wooldridge warned that the new technology would be a “damaging force” for employees who perform duties like taking phone calls. “A type of job I'm worried about is call center operators. If your job is to understand what people are telling you but you are more or less following instructions that you’ve been given, this kind of job is easily affected when artificial intelligence steps onto the stage.”
A 2022 study found automation is partially responsible for a drop in US industrial jobs. Previous research has estimated a loss of 420,000 to 750,000 jobs during the1990s and 2000s, most of which were manufacturing jobs. Despite that, Professor Wooldridge says the technology is far from capable of performing manual labor roles. He suggests that the technology like robots is indeed taking jobs from humans, but at a much lower rate than most assume.
A recent study found that only 14 percent of workers in their study have lost their jobs to a robot. As Professor Wooldridge said, people are generally quick to vastly exaggerate (夸大) the rate of robot takeover.
28. What do we know about manual workers from Paragraph 1
A. They are safe from losing jobs. B. Their work depends on their technical ability.
C. They know less about high technology. D. Their work is unlikely affected by AI.
29. What point of view does most media express about AI and jobs
A. Humans are still the main body of future work. B. AI will replace the majority of human work.
C. AI will bring more job opportunities to people. D. Technologies make a difference to people's lives.
30. According to Wooldridge, who might probably be affected by AI most
A. Construction workers. B. Airplane pilots. C. Receptionists. D. Teachers.
31. What is Wooldridge's attitude towards robot takeover
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Cautious. D. Positive.
D
Children who are given opportunities to manage money when they' re young are more likely to be financially responsible as they enter adulthood, says a new study from Brigham Young University.
The study, led by Dr. Ashley LeBaron-Black, surveyed over 4,000 young adults, asking a series of questions in order to understand how they learned money management from their parents during childhood. The results of the study found that while it was important for parents to talk to their kids about money management and to model good financial behaviors, these efforts alone weren't enough to prepare children to become financially responsible young adults. The most effective thing a parent can do is to provide experiential learning opportunities for their children, allowing them to manage their own money and practice making financial decisions.
Allowing children to manage money can be intimidating for parents at first, but LeBaron-Black suggests parents relax and start with simple activities. For example, a young kid could be given a simple 3-slot (三个投币口的) money box to store their money: one slot for savings, one for giving, and one for spending. As they grow, children can practice budgeting (预算), saving for short-term goals like a bike, saving for long-term goals like college, spending money wisely, and opening savings or other investment accounts.
“Keep trying, even when it seems difficult,” said LeBaron-Black. “Parents need to know that setting children up with a strong foundation (基础) of money management takes time. In the years to come, the small efforts you' re making are going to pay off for your kid.
“It's a pattern that can apply to many aspects (方面) of parenting. Discussions are necessary, but verbal (口头的) teaching alone is not enough. When parents give children opportunities to make their own choices and experience the results, whether positive or negative, children will be much better at making choices throughout their lives,” LeBaron-Black explained.
32. What is the new study mainly about
A. The real role money plays in children's lives.
B. Why money management is important to children.
C. How parents should teach children about money.
D. The different views on money of parents and children.
33. What does the underlined word “intimidating” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Necessary B. Worrying. C. Dangerous. D. Interesting.
34. What is LeBaron-Blac's suggestion for parents
A. Practicing good financial behaviors. B. Setting financial goals for children.
C. Learning basic financial knowledge. D. Being patient with their efforts.
35. How might children benefit from the parenting pattern LeBaron-Black mentioned
A. They will learn self-control. B. They will be better decision-makers.
C. They will be more independent. D. They will learn the meaning of hard work.

I woke up with a start and looked at the clock in front of me—05:00 am. The whole night I had been dreaming and planning various things I wanted to do. After all, it was my 16th birthday!
Yesterday, none of my family had shown any sign to indicate that they’ d remembered the fact that my birthday was only 24 hours away. They might have been planning a surprise for me!
I raced downstairs. “Well, you' re up early,” my dad said, his eyes fixed upon the newspaper. My mother, who was cooking breakfast, paid me no attention.
“Have they forgotten about me ” I wondered. “No, they would never do that.”
“Mama, I was wondering if you could cook me some pancakes,” I said in a cheerful tone. “Jessie, I am in a hurry today. I am afraid I don't have time to make you pancakes,” my mother said.
None of them seemed to be aware of my special day. At least for my sake, they could’ve given it some importance. And none of my brothers seemed to be interested in my birthday either.
I felt a bit down. For months we had been planning events for my birthday— shopping, games, decorations and so much more— but now, they all seemed to have forgotten about my birthday.
Lunch was boring, with nothing special cooked for my special day. Everyone sat talking about random (随意的) things, not once mentioning my birthday.
Disappointed, I climbed up the stairs to my room and lay down in bed. Suddenly, Mom called out to me. I dashed (急奔) towards her, hoping to hear something cheerful. But my optimism (乐观) disappeared when she said, “Me, your dad and your brothers are attending a dinner. Since you woke up early, we thought you might need some sleep. If you feel hungry, there's food in the fridge. Call if you need help. Bye, and be a good girl.”

写作
第一节:应用文写作(满分15分)
One possible version:
Dear Mark,
I am truly grateful that you invited me to accompany you to the science museum this Sunday. However, I feel terribly sorry to tell you that I can't because the arrangement conflicts with our weekly oral English group activity.
Since the beginning of this term, my group members have promised to improve our spoken English every Sunday afternoon in our extra-curricular time. Thus, it would be embarrassing to miss it. If we go to the science museum next Saturday, would that suit you
My sincerest apologies again for the inconvenience. Hope you can accept my rearrangement. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
One possible version:
They all waved goodbye one by one, leaving me alone in the house. I ran to my room and closed the door, crying myself to sleep. Suddenly, I heard something. I observed my surroundings, but there was nothing unusual in my bedroom. I jumped out of my bed, sure that someone was there in the house. “I…I’ve already called the police. You can't escape!” I shouted. I knew that my threat sounded useless and worthless, but I had to give it a try. With all my courage, I opened the door.
“Surprise!” a lot of voices called out. Trying to find out what was happening, I looked around. All my friends, my parents and my brothers came inside the room, holding my birthday cake. I felt so overwhelmed and began to cry. “Oh, I thought you all had forgotten, "I said, fighting back tears.
“Not as long as I am alive, "came the voice of a lady. Someone was standing at the door -- it was my grandmother! I rushed to her and gave her a hug. That was the best birthday of my life!

W: Be sure to take some medicine for a rainy day. I made the mistake of forgetting it last time.
M: OK. I’ll write it down in my notebook in case I forget.

W: Today I’ll talk about Wally Amos, the founder of the Famous Amos Cookie. Actually, he started out as an agent at the William Morris Agency who used home-baked chocolate chip cookies as his way to get noticed. After a while, some of his business partners encouraged him to sell the cookies. They even gave money to the Famous Amos Cookie, which he started in1975. And its sales hit $12 million seven years after its founding. His cookies were a success, but he wasn't a good manager and his company started losing money, so he had to bring in new money. From 1985 to 1988, he went through four different co-owners. By the time the Shanby Group bought it in 1988, Amos had nothing left. And then he started a new company called “Wally Amos Presents: Chip and Cookie” four years later, but the Famous Amos Cookie brought a case against him because of the company's name. Finally, he agreed not to use his own name or image on the cookies. He then moved to Hawaii and started another cookie company called “Uncle Noname Cookie.” That's all for today. Thank you for listening.
