Max, 16, a rising junior in Florida, began offering his tech coaching for seniors at The Palace and at The Palms in Weston more than a year ago, after he helped his grandmother with her iPhone, iPad and Apple watch.
That experience inspired him and his parents. They reached out to a connection at The Palace at Coral Gables and launched a website: . His students are residents of The Palace at Coral Gables, octogenarians(八旬老人) fascinated by technology and eager to learn about this brave new frontier.

All his students, regardless of age or skill, are motivated by the power of technology to connect. They want to stay in touch—and see— children and great-grandchildren who live elsewhere. China’s new energy vehicle sector has witnessed rapid growth in recent years, getting a head start in the global race to electrify cars and fostering competitive edges in its domestic auto brands. In its latest move to boost NEV development, China said it aims to bring this year’s NEV sales to 9 million units, an increase of 30 percent year-on-year, according a work plan unveiled last week.
Zhu Yifang, a researcher with the China Automotive Technology and Research Center Co Ltd, said that policy support has been an “accelerator” for the development of China’ s NEV industry over the years. China rolled out its first NEV development plan in 2008. The country’s policymakers, at both central and local levels, have since provided consistent and solid support for the development of the sector.
East China’s Anhui province is a typical example. It was among the first provinces to develop NEVs in China, and has long leveraged policy stimulus to promote the growth of the industry. Anhui is now home to carmakers such as Chery and Nio.
On the consumption front, preferential policies have encouraged people to choose new energy cars over fossil-fueled ones, facilitating the expansion of the NEV market and powering firms along the industrial chain to step up innovation.
With policy support and market-driven innovation, China has put in place a relatively complete NEV industrial chain, covering batteries, motors, electronic controls, and vehicle manufacturing and sales. In the past, competition in the sector was mainly about special technologies, but nowadays what matters more is the industrial chain, said Xu Jun. vice-president of Chinese car manufacturer Leapmotor.
If China’s new energy carmakers want to benefit from the current momentum (势头), according to Zhu Yifang, they should consolidate their advantages and catch up with their overseas peers in such areas as brand value, technology R&D and global layout. Fu Bingfeng, executive vice-president of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, called for sustained efforts to improve the development of chips, basic software, key materials and other weak links in the industrial chain. Amid the global wave of electrification and intelligent transformation, China’s carmakers must step up technological innovation and make car manufacturing more digitalized and intelligent, Zhu said.
8. What has accelerated the development of China’s NEV industry over the years
A. Policy support. B. More investment.
C. Technological development. D. Fierce competition.
9. What does the underlined word “leveraged” probably mean in paragraph 3
A. Thought highly of. B. Got rid of.
C. Made use of. D. Took consideration of.
10. What can we learn concerning the new energy vehicle industry
A. It hasn’t got enough attention in China. B. China falls behind in the global race to electrify cars.
C. It is much less competitive than before. D. The focus of the competition has shifted.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the text
A. China’s NEV industry has by far surpassed the overseas peers.
B. There is still a long way for China’s NEV industry to go.
C. At present China’s NEV industry has no advantages at all.
D. China’s carmakers are supposed to copy their peers to make rapid progress.
D
There is little, it seems, that people won’t do for their pets. Americans spent $186 bn on them last year, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, covering everything from food and vet visits to toys and grooming. That is more than they spent on childcare. Catering to pets has become big business. Mars, a company best known for its chocolate bars, made two-thirds of its revenue (收益) last year from pet-care. Besides owning the Royal Canin pet-food brand, the company also operates thousands of vet clinics. Nestlé and Colgate, two other consumer-products giants, also make around a fifth of their revenue from their pet divisions.
Spending on pets rocketed through the covid-19 pandemic, as lonely people adopted animals and then gave in to excessive spending on them. Between 2019 and 2023 pet spending grew by a compound annual rate of 11%, in nominal terms, compared with 6% for consumer spending overall and 5% for pet spending over the preceding decade. Plenty more growth is yet to come. Morgan Stanley, a bank, estimates pet spending in America will grow by 2.5% this year, well ahead of estimates for, say, clothes, and forecasts that annual spending will rise to around $260 bn by 2030.
And analysts calculate the pet business will soon have a boom again. Behind that is a shift in the relationship between pets and humans. Owners increasingly see themselves as parents, not masters.
That change is playing out across generations. “Millennials and Gen Z see their pets differently,” says Kristin Peck, chief executive of Zoetis, a drugmaker for animals. “They really see them as part of their families.” Some 95% of Gen Z owners surveyed last year by the American Pet Products Association, an industry group, said they bought their dog a gift at least once a year, compared with 81% of boomers. The average cost of those gifts was a lavish $44 among Gen Z owners, compared with $17 among boomers.
All this is attracting plenty of newcomers to the pet industry. Earlier this month Gilles Andrier, the boss of a Swiss company, said his firm is eyeing the pet-food market. “People spend more money on pets than kids nowadays,” he explained. Best, then, to have a dog in the fight.
12. Why are the three companies mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To introduce some pet products. B. To describe a strange phenomenon.
C. To provide support for the topic. D. To attract the interest of the readers.
13. What are the attitudes of Millennials and Gen Z to the pets
A. They show no interest in raising pets.
B. They share the similar ideas to the older generations.
C. They are only willing to spend money on necessities.
D. They treat them as members of their families.
14. How does the author support the topic of the text
A. By presenting an experiment. B. By listing the statistic data.
C. By giving some definitions. D. By sharing personal viewpoints.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A Pet Marketing is Booming. B. Attitudes to Pets Have Changed.
C. Raising Pets Is Costly. D. Furry Friends Are Important to People.

In a bustling city, there lived a young woman named Lily. Lily was shy and often found it difficult to make friends. She would walk through the crowded streets, feeling a sense of isolation amidst the sea of people. Her days were spent mostly alone, reading books in quiet corners of cafes or taking long walks in the park. She yearned for companionship but her shyness held her back.
One day, as she was browsing through a bookstore, she came across an advertisement for a social event at a local community center. The idea of attending such an event filled her with trepidation. She debated with herself for hours, imagining all the possible scenarios that could go wrong. But a small voice inside her urged her to take a chance and break free from her shell.
Finally, after much internal struggle, she decided to overcome her shyness and attend. As she walked into the room filled with people, her heart pounded with nervousness. The noise and chatter seemed overwhelming. She found a quiet corner and sat there, observing others. Her hands were fidgety, and she constantly questioned her decision to be there.
Suddenly, a friendly woman named Sarah approached her and started a conversation. Lily was hesitant at first but soon found herself engaged in a pleasant chat with Sarah. They discovered they had common interests in books and music. As the evening progressed, Lily began to relax and enjoy the company. She realized that maybe stepping out of her comfort zone wasn’t so bad after all.
The event ended with Lily feeling a glimmer of hope and a newfound sense of courage. She had taken a small step towards breaking free from her isolation. Little did she know that this encounter would change her life in ways she couldn’t yet imagine.
