Language points
1. No one knew me. 没有人认识我。
no one意为“没有人”,相当于nobody,用来指人,不指物,其后通常不接of 短语。no one作主语时,谓语动词通常用单数。
e.g. No one knew that he came from a poor family.
没有人知道,他来自一个很穷的家庭。
【拓展】none 形容词,意为“没有一人;没有一个;一点儿也没有”,可以与of 短语连用。
e.g. None of us has been to Hainan.
2. I was very lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone.
我很孤独,不敢与任何人交朋友。
be afraid to do sth.意为“不敢做某事”。
be afraid of doing sth.意为“害怕做某事”。
e.g. My sister is afraid to go out alone at night.
e.g. The boy is shy and he is afraid of speaking before class.
3. Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing,
I felt even more lonely.
每次我听到其他同学又说又笑,我感到更加孤独了。
(1) every time表示“每次”,在此引导一个时间状语从句,相当于each time。
e.g. Every time/Each time I see him, he always seems busy.
(2) even副词,意为“甚至”,用于修饰比较级。much、a lot、a little、a bit 等词(组)也常用来修饰比较级,表示不同的程度。
e.g. The first question is difficult. The second one is even more difficult.
4. One day, my classmates were talking with their friends, but I
sat in silence.
一天,我的同学正跟他们的朋友聊天,而我默默地坐着。
(1) in silence意为“安静地,沉默地” 。
e.g. He looked at the pictures on the wall in silence.
(2) silence不可数名词,意为“寂静;无声”;silent形容词,意为“寂静的;无声的”,keep silent意为“保持安静”。
e.g. I like the silence of the country night.
e.g. Tom kept silent all the time.
5. Day by day, I learnt to trust people, and they include me in their
circle of friends.一天天地,我学着信任他人,他们也在他们的
朋友圈里加上了我。
(1) day by day意为“一天天地;渐渐地” ,在句子中作状语。
e.g. When autumn comes, it gets cool day by day.
(2) include 动词,意为“包括;把……列为一部分”,后接名词或动词-ing形式作宾语,不用于进行时态。
e.g. The tour included a visit to the Great wall.
e.g. Her daily work includes making dinner for the family.
