Jan Ernst Matzeliger was born on September 15,1852. Matzeliger's father was a Dutch engineer. Showing mechanical gift at a young age, Matzeliger began working in machine shops managed by his father at 10. At 19, he left Suriname to see the world as a sailor on an East Indian merchant ship.
After settling in Philadelphia in 1873, Matzeliger struggled to make a living in Philadelphia. In 1877, he moved to Lynn, Massachusetts, to seek work in the town's rapidly growing shoe industry. He found a position in a shoe factory. Matzeliger learned cloth trade, which made shoes almost wholly by hand.
Shoemakers made molds (模具) of customers' feet with wood or stone. The shoes were then sized and shaped according to the molds. The process of shaping was done entirely by hand. This was considered the most difficult and time-consuming.
Matzeliger set out to find a solution to the problems he found in the shoe-making process. He thought there had to be a way to develop a good method for lasting shoes. He began coming up with designs for machines that could do the job. After experimenting with several models, he applied for a patent on a "shoe lasting machine (鞋楦机)". The machine held a shoe on a shoe tree, pulled the leather down around the heel, set and drove in the nails, and then produced the completed shoe. It could produce 700 pairs of shoes a day—more than 10 times the amount produced by human hands.
Matzeliger's shoe lasting machine was an immediate success. In 1889, the Consolidated Lasting Machine Company was formed to make the devices, with Matzeliger receiving a large amount of stock in the organization.
Matzeliger's shoe lasting machine increased shoe production greatly. The result was the employment of more unskilled workers and the increase of low-cost, high-quality shoes for people around the world.

Theo works day and night in the tulip (郁金香) fields in the Netherlands and never complains of sore muscles. How is this possible
Theo is an artificial intelligence, or AI, robot that looks for diseased flowers each spring. The work prevents viruses from spreading among the valuable plants. The robot looks for troubled tulip bulbs and destroys them if necessary. They are removed from the healthy ones in a processing center after the harvest.
There are 45 robots like Theo working in the tulip fields of the Netherlands. Their work becomes important as the winter turns to spring and peak season nears. People come from around the world to see the colorful flowers.
Allan Visser's family has been growing tulips for three generations. This is the second season that he has used a robot. He said it is very expensive—the same as a sports car—about $200,000. In the past, knowledgeable farmers would walk the fields looking for tulips that showed signs of sickness.
"I prefer to have the robot because a sports car doesn't take out the sick tulips from our field," he said, "Yeah, it is expensive, but there are less and less people who can really see the sick tulips."
The robot has been trained to detect the sick plants. Red stripes show up on the leaves of infected plants. Rolling slowly through the fields at about one kilometer per hour, the robots search for sick tulips. Visser explained that the robot has cameras and takes thousands of photos of the tulips. And then, the AI software considers the photos and decides which tulips need to be killed.
H2L Robotics is the company that makes the robots. Erik de Jong is the managing director. He said all of the knowledge they use in the computer program that informs the robot comes from tulip farmers like Theo van der Voort. He is the farmer that the robot is named after.
Van der Voort retired after 52 years of looking for sick flowers in his fields. "It's fantastic," he said, "It sees just as much as I see."
28.What can we infer from Visser's words
A.The robot has strong muscles. B.The robot is costly but beneficial.
C.He fails to employ expert farmers. D.He has a strong desire for a luxury car.
29.What does paragraph 6 mainly talk about
A.How the robot operates. B.How much the robot costs.
C.How fast the robot moves. D.What the robot is made of.
30.What is Van der Voort's attitude towards the robot
A.Skeptical. B.Tolerant. C.Disapproving. D.Enthusiastic.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.An Intelligent "Farmer" B.An Imaginary Robot
C.An Innovative Company D.An Expert Surgeon
D
It can be very difficult for people in wheelchairs to move around on beaches. Most beaches don't have ways for disabled visitors to move around easily, or to get in and out of the sea safely.
Seatrac is a system that was designed to solve this problem. Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp (坡道) that can smoothly carry a person down into the sea, where the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water or go for a swim. The Seatrac system can help the disabled, older people and pregnant (怀孕的) women.
The chair is operated by remote control. When the person is ready to get out of the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back to the top of the slope. It's even possible to take a shower in the Seatrac chair after going for a swim.
Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. The idea for it came when one of the inventors Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair. The friend said he enjoyed the sea but didn't like having to be carried into the ocean as if he were "a bag ofpotatoes".
Mr Fotiou realized that there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to get into the water. Mr Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system. A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system is solar-powered. It doesn't require outside power and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when swimming season ends.
This summer, the Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, and Latvia. The Seatrac service in Greece is being offered for free. The Greek government and the EU have helped pay for it, with local cities buying and managing the equipment. Greece's government hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.
32.Who is Seatrac mainly intended for
A.Anyone who has a hard time walking. B.Children who cannot swim very well.
C.Everyone who wants to enjoy the sea. D.Those who are unwilling to walk on beaches.
33.How did the idea of Seatrac come about
A.Ignatios Fotiou was asked to invent it by his friend.
B.Ignatios Fotiou listened to a complaint from a disabled friend.
C.Ignatios Fotiou wanted to have a chair operated by remote control.
D.Ignatios Fotiou himself was troubled by not being able to enjoy the sea.
34.What can we learn about the Seatrac system from the text
A.It offers service for free globally. B.It consumes a lot of electricity.

Why Not Build A DIY Ebike
Buying an electric bicycle is a great way to get going quickly and enjoy the immediate satisfaction of getting around on an ebike. 36 Here are some of the best reasons.
Save money with a DIY ebike. When you buy an electric bicycle, you aren't just paying for the ebike. 37 By converting (改装) a bicycle yourself, you can save a bunch of money. When you decide to convert your own bicycle into an electric bicycle, you just pay for the ebike parts themselves.
Gain control when building your own ebike. When you choose your own parts, you have total control over the performance of your ebike. This applies more to choosing parts individually, but even buying a complete electric bicycle conversion kit (成套的组合部件) is a great way to go. There are so many different kits for everyone. 38
A DIY ebike means a better bicycle. A dirty secret of the ebike industry is that many ebike producers skimp an the quality of the actual bicycle, so that they can bring the price down enough. 39
40 The last and perhaps best reason for converting your own bicycle into an ebike is simply the sense of fulfillment. You get a great feeling every day when you ride your ebike, knowing that you are doing a good thing for the environment and that you are also riding something you built with your own two hands.
A.You can start with a simple electric bicycle.
B.As a result, they can attract more consumers.
C.Be proud of building your own electric bicycle.
D.You're actually covering all the cost of the ebike.
E.Do your own electric bicycle conversion without any help.
F.The kit you choose will largely depend on your own desires.
G.However, converting your own bicycle into an ebike is better.

It was the first day of the new school year. Sylvia entered the music room at a high school. The 65-year-old music teacher was known for being strict in class. Many students were afraid of her and not interested in this class. They attended music class only because they needed the credit. But Sylvia took her job seriously.
That day, she walked to the piano in the corner and started leading them into a song to get them warmed up. And she prevented those trying to joke around right away, which might explain why some students didn't like her teaching style.
Soon enough, her class was almost over and one student asked Sylvia curiously, "What do you like to listen to at home " "Surely, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky," another student laughed before Sylvia could answer, making some others laugh. "I actually like a lot of pop music, and even some of the things you listen to nowadays. But I prefer to listen to classic music," Sylvia replied, smiling at the kids.
Some returned the smile and started asking about some singers and bands. But the bell rang before she could answer all their questions and they had to leave. However, it seemed like that the fear in her students had relieved a bit since that day. Soon enough, the students got used to her and started taking her lessons more seriously.
However, one day, Sylvia's husband suddenly died. She took two weeks off from work. Feeling sad and hopeless, she didn't even listen to music anymore.
Before long, her students learned what happened to their music teacher. Soon, they decided to organize a performance and practice playing certain music that could be in memory of her husband and cheer her up. When Sylvia returned to the class, they would surprise her by playing the music. After making the decision, the students chose the proper music.
