A
In the heart of the Kanien’keha Nation (卡尼恩克哈部族)in Canada, McComber, a native language teacher reflected on a question raised by Maori (毛利) language advocate Sir Karetu: what was his dream for the future of his language
Kanien’keha, the Mohawk language, is endangered, and for decades, McComber has worked hard to operate a native language school. At the turn of the century, as it encountered more barriers, McComber looked around the world for help and inspiration, and Karetu was the answer. “Don’t wait for money or approval; just do the work,” Karetu told him. It’s the same message Karetu carried with him decades ago, when te reo Maori, the Maori language, was also on the line.
In the early 1970s, young Maori advocates in New Zealand marched to the government, demanding Maori be taught in all public schools. In 1982, Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi established Kohanga Reo, an engaging language program where Maori was the only language taught, spoken and used both in the classroom and at home, and the courses focused on their history and culture. “Grandparents became teachers,” she says. “The difference-maker was that the Kohanga Reo was entirely community-led. Families raised the money to rent classroom spaces, and volunteers planned and taught classes.”
Translated in English as “language nest”, the Kohanga Reo model quickly became an important cultural export and inspired other minority communities worldwide. “Our parents ruled,” a student of McComber’s nest school says, “They wanted to teach us the beauty of our language, our culture, and who we are. And it has given me the confidence to speak and read with ease in both English and Kanien’keha.”
The model helped communities view the world through their ancestors’ eyes, ensuring the survival of their way of life. “It’s not just about language,” McComber can now answer that question. “It’s everything.”
21. Why did McComber turn to Karetu for help
A. Karetu also spoke Kanien' kcha. B. Karetu once faced a similar cris:s.
C. He needed his financial support D. He desired his tips on language learning.
22. What contributed to the success of Kohanga Reo
A. Expansion of public schools. B. Flexibility of the courses.
C. Rule of the students' parents. D. Support from the community.
23. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The impact of the Kohanga Reo model. B. The importance of parents’ involvement.
C. The procedure for building the nest school. D. The case of a student finding his real identity.
24. By saying “It's everything”, McComber suggests ___________.
A. guaranteeing the survival of their own schools. B. keeping their culture for future generations.
C. purifying their unique minority language. D. practicing the tradition of their ancestors.

New technologies tend to cause a cycle of concern, disorder, and conflict before eventually being accepted. Recent writings about artificial intelligence (AI) and other advances in computer science suggest that we are preparing to welcome the final stage of this latest round of invention.
The Last Human Job, sociologist Allison Pugh’s new book centered on caregiving and human connection in the age of automation, warns readers against unreserved acceptance of these technological advances, citing “connective labor” as valuable human work that will not be easily replaced by algorithms (算法). “Absent from discussions about AI and automation,” Pugh argues, “is the impact that these systems might have on the emotional understandings we build of ourselves and others.”
Pugh sets the stage by arguing for the value of human connection and the importance of both seeing and being seen by others. “Practitioners (从业者) said they gained a sense of purpose simply from the opportunity of observing people at their most defenseless,” she observes. She then provides a summary of how care work is being increasingly automated, showing how quantification and measurement have taken over many aspects of human-facing jobs, leaving little room for doctors, teachers, and others to build connection.
“When one goes to a doctor or a teacher, the encounter is full of the potential for shame, a risk that makes it all the more powerful when practitioners show empathic (同理心的) reflection,” writes Pugh. In chapter 8, she explains how such interactions can be done right. Research conducted by herself and others identifies three key aspects supporting connective labor: “relational design”, or how people are set up to interact with one another; “connective culture,” or shared practices and beliefs that influence how people interact; and “resource distribution,” which includes time given for interaction, worker-to-client rates, and the extent of technology and data use, among other factors.
Pugh concludes by arguing that we need a social movement for connection. “We need to fight for what we might call our ‘social health’,” she maintains.
25. What is the main concern of Allison Pugh's new book
A. The impact of AI on future employment.
B. The approach to living and working with AI.
C. The increasing role of technology in caregiving.
D. The value of connective labor in the age of automation.
26. Why does the author mention “practitioners” in Paragraph 3
A. To explain how to di s care work.
B. To argue against the automation technology.
C. To prove the significance of human connection.
D. To discuss the challenges or' privacy in caregiving.
27. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. The encounter. B. The shame. C. The risk. D. The potential.
28. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The overview of chapter 8. B. The effective way to interact
C. The new trend of caregiving D. The factors of avoiding shame.

There’s a classic short story in which a young man travels years ahead and meets his future self. Narratives like this have always been related to science fiction. But what if you could meet your future self
I’m a psychologist and professor. My research over the past 15 years isn’t far from this theme. I’ve largely focused on how people think about and relate to their future selves, and explored the reasons why we have such a hard time making long-term decisions. In my research, I’ve learnt that we often imagine our future selves like strangers, which can impede us in making long-term choices. One way to bridge the emotional gap is to think of future selves in more concrete and vivid ways, like writing letters to and from one’s future self, which can strengthen the connection between current and future selves.
Admittedly, having people engage in an imagined conversation is a far cry from actually meeting one’s future self. But it’s believed that far richer interactions may happen in the near future through artificial intelligence (AI). It wouldn’t be predicting exactly what choices you’d make. It’d be more about showing your potential, based on the lives of people similar to you: not just one possible life for you, but rather, the most possible life path for you. Such interactions could offer valuable insights into our potential future selves.
So, to return to my original question: if you could time-travel to meet your future self, what aspects of your life would you want to know more about I realized, through thorough reflections, that the most powerful questions would be ones that helped me make better choices today —questions exploring personal growth, regrets and unfulfilled actions.
Actually, you don’t need to wait for time travel or advanced AI for answers that you can act on. Through my research, I’ve learnt that simply taking a bit of time to picture this meeting can help you make better choices now. All you need is a little imagination, and the willingness to put yourself in the shoes of a person you currently treat as a stranger.
29. Why is it difficult for people to make long-term decisions according to the author
A. Technology for time travel is not available.
B. Strangers cannot help with decision-making.
C. Writing letters to one's future self is impractical.
D. People find it hard to connect with their distant selves.
30. What does the underlined phrase “a far cry from” mean m Paragraph 3
A. contradictory to B. very different from
C. not as convenient as D. to. a popular than
31. Which question would the author most likely ask his future self
A. Why hasn’t my hard work ever paid off
B. What can AI do to help people become better persons
C. If given the chance, what would you have done differently
D. How can I succeed without going through all the difficulties in life
32. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Time travel: What if you met your future self
B. My research: How do people view their future selves
C. Emotional gap: Why can’t we talk with our future selves
D. Artificial intelligence: Is it possible to meet your future self

In Chinese traditional architecture, a skywell is an open courtyard or well-like space usually located at the heart of a building or group of buildings. 33 Their designs often feature the classic Chinese dou gong overhangs to provide shade and collect water into a central basin.
Chinese skywells are so effective in cooling homes because they can control natural airing. Cool air is drawn into the building from the lower levels, and warm air escapes and rises through the upper levels. 34
The skywell’s layout and construction materials also help in thermal(热量的)regulation. During the day, the courtyard absorbs heat from the sun, acting as a thermal mass. 35 This day-night cycle helps maintain a balanced and consistent temperature indoors.
Most traditional skywells include water features, such as fountains or ponds. A recent study has shown that the most significant part of a skywell’s cooling effect comes from these water bodies. 36 As water evaporates(蒸发)from these features, it absorbs heat from the surrounding air. This reduces the temperature within the courtyard and surrounding rooms.
37 One fitting example is the National Heavy Vehicle Engineering Technology Research Centre in Jinan, an 18-story building that has a giant open space at its heart from the fifth floor to the top floor. The toilets, elevators, and meeting rooms surround this space. This enhances natural airing and natural energy consumption, according to the Shanghai-based CCDI Group.
A.This promotes fresh air flow, especially during hot summer days.
B.It is often a square surrounded by the building’s rooms and wings.
C.This cooling was disadvantageous in regions with hot and dry climates.
D.It’s probably why temperatures around them are 2.6℃ to 4.2℃ lower.
E.These wonders continue to inspire architects to seek sustainable solutions.
F.The magic of skywells stands as witnesses to the wisdom of ancient builders.
G.The stored heat is gradually released as the outdoor temperature drops at night.

The sound of glass breaking is instantly recognizable. I'd been telling my best friend Missi a silly story and had spun around in the living room when I heard' that sound and froze.
When I looked down at the carpet, it was covered with pieces of sparkling red, pink and clear glass. Missi said. “Oh, no, not the vase.”
“Why What did I do ” My face reddened.
“Abby, that glass vase was one of the few items my relatives brought when they came to America, Missi replied nervously.” If you'd broken anything else in the apartment, I would've gladly said I did it. But you're going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she's going to be really mad.”
I was terrified. I'd destroyed a priceless family, heirloom(传家宝). Why did I have to spin(旋转) around like that
We gathered up the shattered pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said gently it didn't look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. The glass was so fragile, like a colorful, swirly light bulb had exploded. Some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Missi said her mom would be home by six. My stomach was in knots. Would her mom yell at me or punish me Would she tell me I couldn't stay in their apartment for the weekend I couldn't stop playing the fifteen seconds over in my mind, me spinning fast and the sound of glass crashing. The only thing I could think of to say was “I'm sorry.”
A couple of minutes after six we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home. Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. “Hello! It's hot today. I want to treat you girls to that frozen yogurt I know you like. Let's go!” her mom said. She pointed at the open door.

Sample writing:
“Before that, I need to tell you something,” I said. “We can talk at the yogurt place, "her mom smiled. “No. I need to tell you now. It's important,” I insisted. I could feel my voice shaking and tried not to cry. “What is it, dear ” she gently asked, closing the door and walking closer to me. Our hands almost touched. With her eyes studying me, my heart beat faster. “I'm sorry,” I blurted out. “I... I was talking and laughing with Missi when I spun around and accidentally broke the vase.” I further explained that we saved the pieces but tried in vain to fix it. It still looked like small pieces of glass.
Hearing my apology, Missi's mother erupted into a loud scream of joy. She embraced mc, kissing me on both cheeks. “Oh, thank you! I always hated that ugly vase. Now it's gone! You've done me a huge favor!” her mom exclaimed with delight. Although relieved to have apologized, I was still in shock, for this was not at all the reaction I had expected. It wasn't until I reached my adult years that I recognized what a profound gift her mother's generosity in welcoming my apology was. Now, when I receive a genuine apology, I always consider the people's feelings and make sure my response shows them their apology was fully heard and truly appreciated.

M: Have you checked out the art show
W: Of course. I'm impressed by a picture,(4) but I can't figure out what the painter wants to convey. It's a line drawing.
M: Ha-ha, that's exactly the mystery of abstract art.

W: My company has decided to send me to Phoenix next week. I will be on behalf of my general manager to attend the conference in that he is on sick leave.(5)
M: Oh, I’ll be in Winnipeg on business then. I’ll book a budget-friendly air ticket with a stopover in Salt Lake City to meet your parents.

W: Hey, are you Clifford (6)I couldn't even recognize you. What happened
M: Yes, I am. I've just come back from a summer camp. I've lost 22 pounds in the past 30 days.(6)
W: I can't believe it! What did you do there
M: About three-hour intensive training every day, like weightlifting, five hundred sit-ups, jogging, jumping jacks, etc. At that time, I felt run-down every day. But I'll never regret joining it.
W: I'm very happy for you. I've noted that you' re more active and outgoing than before. Where did you get the information about the camp
M: Oh, when I walked past a bakery with my friends, I came across a poster for the camp with its number and website attached.(7) And then I called them and signed up for the classes.
W: Got it.

M: Wow! What a game!(8)
W: Yeah, 5-5 When did you last see a 10-goal draw (8)
M: The last one was Colchester United vs. Manchester United. West Brom were 5-2 down against Manchester United and scored three.(9)
W: It's disappointing that my beloved team blew a three-goal lead, but it was such a great match that I couldn't be too unhappy.(9)
M: In the end, I think a draw was the right result. Obviously, I'd have loved West Brom to win, but neither team deserved to lose.
W: True, though West Brom were not so good in the first half. I don't know what happened at half time, but their striker looked like a completely different side after the interval.
M: Yeah. I know what you mean. I suppose Manchester United didn't seem to try hard enough in the second half. Maybe they thought they had won it in the first half.
W: Yeah. They didn't look as sharp in the second half.

W: Now we have grasped the meaning of washing hands. Then the following question on the list: How do we wash our hands
M: Well, my own personal view is that we need to wet our hands with clean water, apply enough soap to cover all surfaces of our hands, and rinse both sides of our hands with clean water. Am I right, Mrs. Helmore (15)
W: Absolutely! But it should be remembered that if you're not at home, use paper towels to turn off the tap.(15) And what about our bodies Try to bathe or shower often, especially after vigorous exercise. Start cleaning your head and face. Then continue to your arms, chest and back. Finally, clean your legs. Wash well, especially under your armpits. Use a soapy washcloth to clean.
M: Okay. We got it. Do we still need to wear face masks all the time in a post-pandemic world (16)
W: It depends. Your principal may ask us to wear masks sometimes if it is necessary to minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19. You should also closely monitor any information provided by our state and ensure the rules are followed.
M: What a great lesson! Thank you, Mrs. Helmore. We’ll follow your advice wherever we are.

Good morning, class! Have you ever “let the cat out of the bag” Or have you accidentally talked about “get your ducks in a row” Why are there animals in such strange places Idioms are phrases where the meaning is not clear from the individual words. Here are some common animal idioms you can use to talk to other English speakers. “John came to work late today.” “He is usually late! I guess a leopard cannot change its spots.” A leopard cannot make his spots go away. In the same way, people can hardly change their habits or attitudes! “Sarah is retiring today.” “I know, we are sad she is leaving. It's the elephant in the room.” As we know, elephants are very big. And if there was one in the room, it would be hard to ignore it.(19) Can you imagine chasing a wild goose When someone says something was “a wild goose chase”, it means you are looking for something that doesn't exist or that you're unlikely to find, so you waste a lot of time.(20)“I thought you left your jacket at your sister's house ” “Oh, I did! I looked everywhere for it. But it must still be there! What a wild goose chase!”
