基础练习
一、
Mai Lin wasn't doing well enough at school, or at least she wasn't satisfied with herself. She wished she could do better.
"Let's review the material we learned in the last unit," the history teacher said. "Who can tell us what caused the War of 1812 " Mai Lin sat at her desk, staring ahead. She hoped the teacher wouldn't call her name. They hadn't studied the War of 1812 at her old school and she didn't know the answer.
"Alison " the teacher asked instead. Oh, perfect, Mai Lin thought. Of course Alison would have the answer. She seemed to have all the answers. Alison was the most popular girl in school – always surrounded by millions of boyfriends, best friends, and others. She was like a brilliant sun.
Mai Lin hadn't made one or two friends of her own so far. Her old school was small and low-key, but a shy person like Mai Lin had a chance there. This new school, however, seemed as big as an airport to Mai Lin, and it seemed very hard to get around in it. She still got lost sometimes in the school.
Mai Lin frowned (皱眉) as Alison answered the teacher's question. Alison probably never got lost, Mai Lin thought to herself. You could probably put Alison down in the middle of a desert, and within five minutes she'd be able to tell you the best way to get home.
History class finally ended, and Mai Lin headed for the gym. The class had been playing basketball. Alison, who was as tall and thin and attractive as a tree, was very good at it. Beside her, Mai Lin felt like a very small and foolish ant. Today, however, the gym teacher pointed to a thick rope hanging from the ceiling and said, "Everybody! You're going to climb this rope today."

Finally, the bell rang. "Don't forget to practice your class presentation(报告) at home! " Miss Bella cried as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jessy felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jessy was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jessy watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jessy sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee's watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jessy knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn't want to run after him. Jessy bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jessy put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. "I'm going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I've won lots of competitions. But when I'm in a race, I'm not really thinking about winning. I'm just loving the feeling of being in the water..." Jessy laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jessy saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee's watch really DID have something magic about it.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Bella asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jessy slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Bella could say anything, there was a shout from behind. "She's stolen my watch!" Lee said angrily, "It went missing at school yesterday."

Courtney Johnson arrived at her son Peter's school just in time and immediately recognized him among the mass of students spilling through the front gate. Peter rushed to the car, climbed inside and put on the seat belt.
"How was your day at school today, Peter " she asked as they left for home.
"Um, it was okay, Mom," Peter said. "I'm starving! Can we please stop by McDonald's on our way home "
"Hungry " Courtney stopped for a moment. "Didn't you have lunch at school today Or is it an excuse for chicken nuggets (鸡块) Not again, Peter!"
"No Mom! I'm actually starving. I would have eaten at the dinning hall, but I had to give my food to my classmate Aiden because he was hungry."
Courtney frowned. "But everyone gets their separate meal at school, Peter."
"Aiden doesn't eat with us, Mom," Peter revealed. "His mom can't pay for his lunch. They are struggling financially. I found him in the playground one day and he told me not to tell anyone because he thought they would laugh at him. Today we had gym class, and everyone was really hungry. I knew Aiden wouldn't have anything to eat, so I offered my portion (一份) to him."
Courtney was happy that her son was kind enough to help a needy classmate. She wondered what went wrong with Aiden's family, so that Aiden had to skip (不吃) lunch at school. When they got home that day, she received a text message from Peter's teacher, saying there would be a parents' meeting the next day. Then she thought of a plan. She called Peter's teacher Mrs Dickens and shared her idea.

I was nominated(提名) for our school's debate team. I jumped at the chance. When I got home that day, I began to fill out the application form, trying hard to prove how I met all the team's criteria: strong communication skills, teamwork, and a good understanding of current events.
The next day, I handed in my application and waited with eagerness. I was on tenterhooks(如坐针毡), anticipation building up with each tick of the clock.
Two weeks went by, and I received a letter from the school about the debate team. Which began with "I'm sorry to...".As soon as the school bus let me off that afternoon, I raced into the house. My mother was typing at the computer.
"Mom," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, "' didn't make the debate team."
She looked up, a smile playing on her lips, thinking I was joking, and playfully reached out to high-five me. But the tears in my eyes told a different story.
"No, really, l wasn't picked," I told her, handing her the letter.
Her smile faded, replaced by a look of genuine concern. "Oh, sweetheart, I'm sorry." she said, surprised. "There must be some mistake." She called the debate team advisor, but he confirmed there were no mistakes and the decision was final. Hearing that, I broke down and burst out crying.
The rejection stung (刺痛) me, especially when I saw friends celebrating their acceptance. I felt cheated, questioning the fairness of the process. In my view, some selected didn't deserve it as much as I did. Bitterness crept (潜入) into my words as I complained.
"I'm the best fit for the team," I protested.
"See, Jenny, complaining won't get you on the team." Mom gave me a serious look

Time was literally flying faster than you could blink. It was already dark. Poor George still scratched every inch of his head for some spark of inspiration. Their teacher had asked every student to write a composition. The title was An Unforgettable Weekend. A both interesting and boring topic.
Just as George was wrestling with his composition, there came a knock on the door. It was Eric, his father. "George, since tomorrow is Saturday, we will go and see your grandparents!" he beamed. "Williams and Jenny I really miss them!" George jumped with joy, dumping his pen on the desk. After all, George hadn't been reunited with his grandparents since the outbreak of Covid- 19 in 2020.
Early next morning they began their long journey. George's grandparents lived in a remote countryside. As Eric was driving, George couldn't help recalling his past experience staying in his grandparents'. The memories of dusty tracks, some shabby houses and the smelly river still hurt painfully. "Dad, was your hometown beautiful when you lived there " George asked curiously. "You bet it! Our life wasn't good, but the scenery was definitely like a picture," Eric responded with noticeable pride. But what George worried about was that instead of having an unforgettable day, he would be greeted with unforgettable gray, He had been deeply scared by the smog there.
With a soft brake, the car stopped, pulling George from the edge of a sweet daydream. "Here we are! Home, sweet home!" Eric said, bouncing out, happy as a kid. Out of the car, what George saw was really unforgettable. The old and small house had been replaced by a new and big one, solid and strong. Just as George was wondering what happened, the door opened and his grandparents strode out, wearing big smiles. Approaching George, Williams gave him a tight embrace. Jenny talked eagerly with Eric. Inside the house, they provided updates on each other.

The Real Champion
I like running and for me, success was winning every race I participated in. My classmates called me Incredible Dash. One day, there was a sporting event planned in my school. Well-prepared for the running competition, I took part in almost every race there was. A large number of people gathered to watch. Crowds were eager to see the running race because it was the most exciting event. When the race for 400m started, all the boys ran fast. Unsurprisingly, I finished first in the race and received a big round of applause. While it was tiring, I felt proud and was on top of my world.
In the race for 200m, I ran full speed and finished the race first once again. The crowd gave thundering claps to me. I jumped all over the ground and was not bothered to give handshakes to my fellow racers.
Then came the race for 100m. Discouraged by the previous races, most boys quit the race except one, a boy named Matt who was invited as an honorary runner. Matt was born with low vision but he was a determined participant of many sports. The judge came to Matt and explained the situation, asking whether he would like to quit too. I, wild with joy, thought I would win the champion without effort. However, to everyone's surprise, Matt decided to complete the event. I sniffed (嗤之以鼻), "It is a waste of time. I bet he even doesn't figure out where the finish line is."
The race of two started. On hearing the starting gun, both Matt and I ran to the finish line, Soon I sped up and left Matt behind. Just 30 meters before arriving at the finish line, I was expecting to receive the applause for the third time when I suffered a leg spasm (抽筋).

When things went wrong, Ittleby Fein always had something nice to say.
When Dad forgot about the pizza and it burned, Ittleby comforted him by saying it would still taste good. And he was right. The pizza edges were dark and crispy, but the middle wasn't half bad. When Ittleby's friend David got a low score on the spelling test, Ittleby said that he would do better next time. And, sure enough, David studied hard and got 100 percent the next week. When his teacher, Mr D, bumped into a bookstand in the library, Ittleby told him not to worry as Mrs Bog wouldn't be upset. He was right. The librarian just laughed and helped pick up the books.
Ittleby looked on the bright side. And everyone liked that about him. Everyone, that is, except Hazel. Hazel was the new kid in the class. On her first day, Ittleby said, "Nice to meet you, Hazel. I think you'll like it here." Hazel stared at him. "I doubt it." Ittleby didn't know what to do. He'd never met anyone like Hazel.
When Mr D said they'd have recess inside because of the rain, Ittleby said, "Every cloud has a silver lining." "A silver lining " Hazel shook her head. "Clouds are white. Maybe gray. Where do you get this stuff " Ittleby felt as if the wind had been knocked out of him. Outside the window, the clouds had rolled over the sun. The room felt darker.
"Bad things come in threes," said Hazel. No outdoor recess is number one. What will the second thing be The class didn't have to wait long to find out.
Greta was carrying a tray of paints during art class. She tripped, and the paint went flying. There was blue on the floor and red and black on the walls. Hazel declared it to be the second bad thing. Ittleby didn't know what to say. Hazel seemed so sure about the Rule of Three Bad Things.
Emma came to look at Ittleby's painting. "It's beautiful. I especially like the grassland." She said.

Race at River's Edge
Like me, my cousin Gabriel is into riding bikes. He's 16 and I'm allowed to join him on longer rides because we're training for a charity cycling event.
One day, after checking our tires(轮胎), we set out for Tournus. Upon arrival, Gabriel and I parked our bikes near the river and walked to the town square. We'd just ridden 33 kilometers, and we were starving. We planned to get lunch and then ride to M con, a small city in France on the Sa ne River.
It was market day. Locals were busy filling their baskets with groceries. Tourists hunted for gifts. Gabriel and I bought a long, thin loaf of bread and some Brie, a soft cheese which tasted awesome.
As we ate, I noticed a girl wearing a USA Basketball T- shirt. She smiled at us.
Basketball is big in France too. You can even watch NBA games on TV. The girl stopped to buy some bread with her mum.
I saw them again by the river. They sat on a bench enjoying their food in front of a long, narrow riverboat named Voyageur. Then they boarded the boat. It was preparing to leave. Suddenly, I spotted a colorful shopping bag on the bench. The girl had left it! I looked up. Some passengers were gathering on the upper deck(甲板) of the riverboat, including the girl and her mum. I held up the bag and waved it to get their attention while Gabriel called to them.
When the girl noticed the bag, she opened her mouth in surprise. But her face fell as the boat started to pull away from the dock(码头). She didn't think she'd get the stuff back.
Running alongside the boat, Gabriel learned from a sailor that the boat's next stop was M con—— our destination as well. It would take the boat just under two hours at a speed of 22 kilometers per hour. "What can we do then " he said.

In our urban planning class, we've been learning about how cities are designed and how they affect our lives. We've studied topics like urban layout, transportation systems, green spaces, and how to make cities more sustainable and livable. The course aims to give us a broad understanding of urban planning and equip us with the skills to think critically about how cities can be improved.
For our school assignment, our group was assigned a task to design a concept for a city of the future. It was an exciting project, but it quickly became clear that we all hid very different ideas about what the city should look like.
At our first meeting, we all talked at once about what we wanted. Jake wanted a city filled with towering skyscrapers that touched the clouds, while Maria dreamed of a city enveloped by green spaces and beautiful flowers. Kevin insisted on including the latest technology in all parts of city living, and Emily couldn't stop talking about the self-sustaining, eco-friendly buildings she had in mind. I was focused on transportation, drawing out plans for a high-speed, efficient metro system that could connect every corner of our city.
We were like five musicians playing different tunes, each believing our melody was the only one that should be heard. It was a heated discussion, with voices sometimes rising and frustration gradually building up. And it seemed for a while that we couldn't agree.
But then, our teacher, Mr. Smith, stepped in and offered some wise guidance. He reminded us that a city is a collective space, shaped by the needs and dreams of its people. He suggested we start by listing what we all agreed was essential for our future city, and then discuss how to combine these key points into a single plan, finding a balance among our different views and making compromises where needed.

基础练习
一、答案:
Hearing the teacher's words, Mai Lin smiled. She knew what was coming. They'd done lots of physical fitness training at her old school and she was quite good at rope climbing. "Who's first " the teacher asked. "Alison " To Mai Lin's surprise, Alison turned as pale as the moon and shook her head. "She's scared," Mai Lin thought. "Perfect Alison was scared." Suddenly Mai Lin heard her own voice saying, "I'll do it." Alison looked up at Mai Lin in great surprise, and all the other classmates seemed surprised, too. The teacher nodded and told Mai Lin to climb.
Mai Lin stepped forward and got close to the rope. She appeared calm but was extremely excited. She climbed the rope very fast and reached the ceiling within what seemed a few seconds, effortlessly. As she reached the top, she glanced down at her fellow students below. Now it was Alison who appeared like a small ant. She saw Alison looking up, eyes wide with admiration. Mai Lin clung to the top of the rope for a moment longer and then headed down to join the class. Once she got on the ground, everybody cheered. Mai Lin knew she would be different from that day on.

Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jessy, waiting for an explanation. A flush of embarrassment came to her cheeks, making Jessy biting her lips. Dead silence suddenly fell. Then came Miss Bella's voice, "Why is Lee's watch on your wrist " Jessy hesitated for a while and decided to tell the truth. However, on second thoughts of the well-prepared speech and the magic of the watch, she changed her mind. "Miss Bella, could I give the speech first and then explain " She made a request in a tone of begging.
Miss Bella smiled and asked the class to listen to Jessy's speech first. Jessy put away her fright, took a deep breath and made for the platform. Casting a glance at the sea of faces watching her, Jessy cleared her throat and began her speech. "I'm going to talk about swimming..." Word began to flood out of her. "What a terrific speech!" Whispers went around the classroom, and even Miss Bella nodded with approval. Immediately Jessy finished her speech, a storm of applause erupted from the class. Relieved, Jessy told everyone the truth, and especially the magic of the watch. She returned the watch to Lee as she eventually realized the real source of confidence.

The next morning, when they all gathered, Mrs Dickens briefed them about Aiden's situation at Courtney's request. Aiden's mom explained how their family had fallen on hard times and was struggling to make ends meet. She had lost her job a few months ago, and despite searching tirelessly for a new one, she hadn't been successful yet. The parents listened attentively and felt a deep sense of empathy for them. Courtney suggested starting a meal-sharing program at the school, where parents could contribute extra lunch portions or donate money to ensure that no child went hungry. The idea resonated with the parents.
As Courtney was about to get into her car outside the school gate, Aiden's mom met her and thanked her for her help. "I can't thank you enough for what you did," Aiden's mom said, her eyes welling up with tears. Courtney reached out and gave her a comforting hug. "You don't have to thank us," she replied. "We're all one big family here." After school, Peter said, "Thank you so much, Mom. You have really helped my friend!" "You should say thanks to yourself. I'm so proud of you, Peter. Your act of kindness has made a real difference in Aiden's life," Courtney answered. Peter smiled shyly, feeling a sense of accomplishment.

I stared at Mom and listened eagerly. She shared her own stories of failure and disappointment and how she turned them into opportunities for growth. "Every rejection is a lesson," she said. With her guidance, I spent the next three months improving my skills. I practiced debates, read extensively to stay updated on current events, and sought feedback from teachers and peers. I even started a debate club after school to gain more experience.
I did make it when a second chance came 3 months later. When the team needed an extra member for an upcoming tournament, they considered my dedication and improvement. This time, I was ready. My performance in the tryouts was confident and well-prepared. Joining the team was a sweet victory, but the real win was in the resilience I had built and the lessons I had learned along the way. My mother's wisdom had steered me through a tough time, and I was grateful for the journey that had made me a better debater and a stronger person.

Lunch over, Williams took George to pick strawberries in the field. With the help of Williams, George quickly got the hang of the work. But before long, his waist ached. "Have a strawberry; it will give you power," Williams said merrily. George put one into his mouth. Wow! It exploded like a little flavor bomb! This renewed his energy. Two hours later, they were done." A dealer will come at 6:00 to buy all these," Grandpa told George. Then they went home. Back at home, George knew what to write.
George set out to write the composition. "I had a very unforgettable weekend picking strawberries," he started it. "Bathed in brilliant sunlight, all strawberry plants thrived, their green leaves dancing in the breeze," he continued. Words were bouncing in his head. He mentioned his blisters on palms, adding the finishing touches to the composition. When Monday came, he handed it in. As George had imagined, it was rated the best one. But what he didn't expect was that his classmates all wanted some blisters.
六、答案:
I fell hard to the ground. At this moment I felt sad and ashamed that I couldn't finish the race. I lay on the ground, unwilling to face the fact and the crowds. I imagined the sneering faces and don't know how to react. Suddenly a hand reached out to me. I raised my head and found it's Matt. "Let's run together." he said. There was just sincerity on his face, no mock. I believed I should trust him, and gave him my hand.
Arm by arm, we walked towards the finish line. The crowds fell into silence, and then broke into loud applause. What did they applaud for I think I know. Bowing to Matt, I thanked Matt for his help and admitted he was the champion. "No, I participate in the race not for the champion, just for the participation. You are very excellent." he said. I was surprised at first, and then realized that the full engagement and good faith deserved the real champion.

She picked it up, not realizing she had paint on her fingers. The fingerprint lay quietly on the painting, seeming to support Hazel's Rule of Three Bad Things. Hazel pointed, "Ittleby's picture is messed up! There's number three." Upset, Emma apologized to Ittleby with her face blushing with shame. Ittleby comforted her with a pat on the shoulder and stared at the print for a while. Suddenly, with his eyes lit up, he dipped his finger into the yellow paint and added two more prints onto the painting. Now, together with Emma's, they looked like three colorful butterflies flying above the green grassland.
"Want to add one " Ittleby asked Hazel. Hazel thought about it. "It will be fun." Ittleby encouraged her. "How strange!", thought Hazel, hesitantly dipped her finger into the print. Gently pressing it onto Ittleby's painting, she carefully added wings. "It looks great," said Ittleby. Outside, the sky happened to clear up, casting golden bright light on the field of butterflies. Looking into each other's eyes, Hazel and Ittleby laughed together merrily. Ittleby said to Hazel, "Forget your Rule of Three Bad Things. Although bad things happen, good things happen, too. And sometimes, there were good things hiding where they didn't expect them."

"We have to find a way to return it," I replied. Without hesitation, we grabbed our bikes and quickly calculated the time it would take to beat the boat to M con. It would be close, but if we rode fast enough, we just might make it. Gabriel and I jumped on our bikes and started pedaling as hard as we could. The wind blew against our faces as we raced along the river's edge, the boat visible in the distance. The road was narrow and uneven at times, but we pushed forward, determined to return the girl's bag. With each passing minute, my legs burned, but I couldn't give up. The smile on the girl's face kept flashing through my mind, urging me to ride faster.
Then it happened: pffft! Flat tire! I looked down in horror as my back wheel wobbled dangerously. "No! Not now!" I groaned. Gabriel stopped and looked at me with a worried expression. We had no time to fix it. "You go on without me!" I urged him. "I'll catch up somehow."Without arguing, Gabriel nodded, took the bag from me, and sped off down the road. I watched him disappear into the distance, feeling a mix of frustration and hope. I quickly pushed my bike off to the side and started running. Despite the setback, I wasn't giving up. As I neared M con, I saw Gabriel waiting by the dock, a triumphant grin on his face. The boat had just arrived, and the girl was joyfully holding her shopping bag, waving to us in gratitude.

With this in mind, we began to reach an agreement. We integrated our ideas on a large sheet of paper. Jake's skyscrapers were now covered in Maria's green spaces. Kevin's technology wasn't just in the buildings but also in the smart roads and traffic systems that Emily designed to reduce pollution. And my metro system became the backbone of our transportation network, connecting every corner of our city. Despite the moments of tension as we debated the details, we learned to listen to each other and respect the value of each idea. We learned to say "our city" instead of "my idea", and in doing so we became a team.
The day of the presentation finally arrived. We stood in front of the class with our model city, a wonder that represented the best of our collective imagination. It was a city where technology and nature coexisted, where life was efficient, and where every citizen could enjoy a high standard of living. Our classmates were impressed, and our teacher praised our collaborative effort. But the real victory was the lesson we learned: by combining our unique perspectives and working together, we could achieve something greater than any of us could alone. We didn't just design a city; we built a blueprint for teamwork and innovation.
