Louis Pasteur infected some chickens with bacteria that he was confident would kill them while investing chicken cholera (霍乱) in the 19th century. But he was wrong: not only did the chickens survive, but they were immune (免疫的) completely. Pasteur had made a mistake, but in doing so he had also found a vaccine.
Fast forward to the 21st century, France, the country that gave the world the father of modern medicine, no longer sees the benefits of getting things wrong. The French school system leaves the children lacking creativity, flexibility of thought, and—crucially—confidence.
“My six-year-old boy went to school and his teacher told me, ‘He’s a nice boy but he asks too many questions,’” says Francois Taddei, the author of an education report. “This is the problem with the French system,” he adds. “You are supposed to know the right answer. You are not supposed to express your opinions or ask questions.”
Arthur, 12, explains that it is “difficult” to get questions wrong. “You are ashamed,” he says. Isolde Serfaty, his mother, criticized the “competition and pressure to always do better” that French children face. “They are marked right from primary school,” she said, referring to the marks out of 20 used as the measurement of achievement across France.
In an attempt to rebel against (反对) the national model, a group of academics from the country’s famous institutions will host a“festival of errors” in Paris this week. The festival is aimed at demonstrating to young participants the potential wonder of making mistakes through a series of science-based workshops.
Ramunni, an Italian teacher, says he tries to encourage his students to reject the pressure to be always right by, for example, giving them problems to solve “which cannot be solved”.
“In the beginning they don’t want to take risks,” he says. “But you notice them becoming more creative after a while. Once they have accepted that getting things wrong is not the end of the world, they can come up with some crazy ideas.”
24.What is the first paragraph used to show
A.Medical researchers are not always right.
B.Making mistakes is likely to bring benefits.
C.Most of the chickens infected with the bacteria were dead.
D.Louis Pasteur solved the problem of chicken cholera in the 19th century.
25.Why does the author mention Isolde Serfaty in the fourth paragraph
A.To explain how the French school system works.
B.To show us that children are not willing to make mistakes.
C.To tell us that the French primary school system is fairly advanced.
D.To stress that the current assessment of achievement should be changed.
26.What is the purpose of the “festival of errors”
A.To demonstrate that the only way to avoid making mistakes is to have no new idea.
B.To encourage schoolchildren to accept the pressure of making mistakes.
C.To prove that the French system is founded on a strict principle.
D.To show schoolchildren the possible magic of making mistakes.
27.What can be inferred about Ramunni
A.He thinks that making mistakes can lead to creativity.
B.Most of his children are ashamed of giving wrong answers.
C.He believes schoolchildren should focus on getting the right answers.
D.He uses his best method to encourage his students to relieve their pressure.

A team of scientists have found that infants (婴儿) choose to watch videos that describe correct counting, rather than those where the sums do not add up. The vast majority of human cultures possess a routine for counting things, and although this generally is not mastered until children are about four years old, the study demonstrates that the principles are first learned by infants.
Professor Virginia Slaughter said, “These findings demonstrate that humans begin to learn about counting earlier than previously thought, based on their cultural counting routine,”
The study involves a series of experiments, in which infants viewed different videos with six fish, with the correct version featuring a hand pointing to each fish in turn accompanied by verbal counting up to six. One test of 36 Australian infants found 18-month-olds, but not 15-month-olds, significantly preferred to watch the correct counting sequence (次序). Slaughter said, “These results show infants start to acquire the abstract principles governing correct counting before producing any counting behavior. Children begin to count sometime after the age of two, and their skills develop over the next several years. But before then, infants witness many samples of counting demonstrated by parents or television.”
What, if anything, do very young children get from this early act of counting These data suggest that between the ages of 15 and 18 months, infants begin to learn the abstract principles governing correct counting through their cultural counting routine.
The preferential (优先的) looking procedure offers a new direction for examining this issue further by revealing what infants learn about their cultural counting routine before producing the behavior.
28.What have the scientists found according to the text
A.Infants dislike watching videos that show them how to count.
B.Parents have a routine for their children to learn counting.
C.Children do not start learning to count until they are four years old.
D.Infants are unwilling to watch videos that don’t describe correct counting.
29.What can we infer from the third paragraph
A.15-month-old infants do not enjoy correct counting.
B.Infants begin to learn counting by watching videos with six fish in them.
C.Children start to understand counting before they actually learn how to count.
D.Slaughter suggested that parents should show different videos to their babies.
30.What can we learn about the infants between the ages of 15 and 18 months
A.They can only recognize small numbers.
B.They can produce some counting behavior.
C.They can learn the rules about correct counting.
D.They can count correctly with their parents’ help.
31.What is the main idea of the text
A.Humans may learn about counting earlier than previously thought.
B.Children begin to count sometime after the age of two.
C.Scientists believe 18-month-old infants can count.
D.Infants can learn to count through videos.

The European Central Bank, or ECB, has cut interest rates for the first time in nearly four years, bringing them down from a record high of 4 percent to 3.75 percent, leading people to guess that the Bank of England, or BoE, and the United States Federal Reserve could follow suit, sooner rather than later. A statement issued by the governing council of the ECB on Thursday said, “Based on an updated assessment of the inflation (通货膨胀) outlook, the potential inflation and the strength of monetary policy transmission, it is now appropriate to change the degree of monetary policy restriction after nine months of holding rates steady.”
Lindsay James, an investment strategist at Quilter Investors, told broadcaster CNBC that the decision “fired the starting gun”, and could cause other major central banks to take action of their own. “Central banks will not want to differ too far from one another, and with political risk being rising, they also won’t want to be seen as too influential,” she said, adding that the decision ended“one of the most aggressive and swift rate-hiking (加息) cycles in modern times”.
Interest rates have stayed high in an attempt to keep inflation under control, but as a consequence, they have a bad effect on economic growth. The move, James added, would influence the 20 countries in the eurozone by “breathing life into an economy that desperately needs some form of stimulus (刺激)”.
Katherine Neiss, chief European economist at investment company PGIM, told the BBC she was “reasonably confident” there would be another ECB cut in the summer or fall, taking the figure down to 3.5 percent or maybe lower by the year’s end. “Growth is encouragingly recovering from the recession (萧条) that the euro area went through toward the end of last year, but it is still weak,” she added.
Although inflation in the United Kingdom has fallen to 2.3 percent, close to the BoE’s target of 2 percent, interest rates remain at 5.25 percent. The next interest rate decision from the BoE, which is independent of the government, is due on June 20, and although there have been calls for a cut, the fact that there is a general election campaign going on at the moment could affect whether or not one is made because of the political sensitivity of any change during the campaign. He added that he expected to see a rate cut in the US in the coming months, with the country also facing an election, this one presidential, in November.
32.How did Lindsay James describe the last rate-hiking cycle in Para. 2
A.Controllable. B.Slow. C.Rapid. D.Normal.
33.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.The growth. B.The investment. C.The figure. D.The euro area.
34.What do the US and the UK have in common
A.They have the same interest rates.
B.They will soon have a general election.
C.They have the same target of inflation.
D.They will raise their minimum wage standard.
35.Which can serve as the best title for the news report
A.ECB cuts interest rates across Europe
B.ECB holds rates steady for nine months
C.ECB updates assessment of inflation outlook
D.ECB’s action influences 20 countries in eurozone

I am editor of an American magazine. Once a teenager wrote to me, who said, “ 36 I don’t want to go to school. Also I don’t want to hang out with my friends recently because I’ve just felt like being alone. Now they aren’t talking to me. What I should do ” I replied to him with an email:
37 The bad news is that no matter your age, this is a part of life. The good news is that these feelings are temporary. In fact, accepting that there will be times like this and learning how to get through them will only make you stronger and more resilient (有复原力的).
Unfortunately, you have to make yourself do things that you don’t want to do sometimes. Accepting that you are in a slump (低潮期) is one thing. 38 There is no way around that. Maybe something will happen one day and shake you from your current state.
As US historian and author Alice Morse said, “Not every day is a good day, but there is something good in every day.”
39 For example, get some exercise. When you are physically active, your bodies release endorphins, which can bring about a sense of well-being. You can also pick up a good book or listen to your favorite music.
40 Like I said, everyone experiences times like this, and they will be able to relate to (与……息息相关) you, rather than thinking you are pushing them away.
Getting through these periods requires a delicate (微妙的) balance of being kind to yourself and not letting it go too far. You can’t always control how you feel, but you can control what you do about it.
A.I am feeling down.
B.Everyone goes through periods like this.
C.But giving in to that feeling is another.
D.There are many obstacles on your path ahead.
E.Be yourself and the right people will love the real you.
F.There are small things you can do every day to try to shake your sad feelings.
G.One important thing is to let your friends and family know how you are feeling.

“The culture shock wasn’t that bad. Learning the language did take some time, but everyone around the school was familiar with foreigners, 61 we had a lot of fun speaking 62 (break) English and Chinese back and forth in the beginning.”
After he 63 (settle) into a routine, Pinnick set about engaging himself in Chinese culture, including Kungfu training. He was also attracted by the philosophical tradition most well-known for the idea of living 64 harmony with the universe.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not a rich family. Thankfully, my dad had raised me in a proper way so that I had a lot of confidence. He often said, “You can do anything you want to do.” My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock—always there for me.
With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship (实习生职位) in CBC or CTV.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself, “I’m new and they’re new, so if I can get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president.” I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good, Faye. That’s exactly what you should do.”
Having gathered my courage, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Brown was on the phone. “I’ve heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o’clock on Monday or eleven o’clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better ” I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered (结巴) a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.
I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Brown took me around, he looked at me and said, “What do you want ” He sounded curious. “All I want is a chance to audition (试镜). I just want you to know my acting. That’s all I’m asking for.”
I didn’t know whether I’d ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called, “Mr. Brown wants to know if you’d like to come and audition for a new school life show tomorrow.” I immediately answered, “Sure!”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After I arrived there the next day, Mr. Brown led me into the studio and I started to perform before them.
