Heman Bekele is not your typical high school student. Rather than spending his free time playing video games or staring at his phone, this 14-year-old from Fairfax, Virginia was calling professors and conducting experiments, all to create a soap that could treat skin cancer, and to make it affordable for everyone who needs it. His work won him the grand prize in this year's 3M Young Scientist's Challenge, a competition that encourages kids to think of unique ways to solve everyday problems.
Growing up in Ethiopia, Bekele found in pity that people working outside were likely to end up getting skin cancer. Skin cancer did have cures and was treatable in most cases. However, the average price of skin cancer treatment globally was almost $40, 000. Those shocking statistics really inspired him to create a more accessible solution. He started doing experiments and working on different things, and that turned into his bar of soap as a project.
A lot of his research and development started in his family's kitchen and in his basement. But as he reached the final of the competition, he realized that he did need to do a little bit more outside of just his house. So he reached out to people at University of Virginia and people at Georgetown, and he got a lot of assistance. The number one person would be Deborah Isabelle, who helped him organize and. structure his ideas during the finalist competition. Bekele said that he definitely couldn't have done that all by himself.
Bekele's award-winning soap is a compound-based bar of soap and it's charged with different cancer fighting chemicals. The color of the soap is a bit of a dark type of white and it has a rough surface, which could be a good exfoliant(去角质剂). It does have a strong medicine smell and feel a bit stickier. The whole point of it is that even once you wash off the soaps, the medicinal parts will stay on your skin. It can activate the body's immune cells to defend cancer.
Bekele won 25,000 prize money and he was going to use it to continue research. He said, "I still need a lot of resources to be able to conduct this research, so this money will definitely help me achieve it."
24. Why did Heman Bekele start working on creating the soap
A. Because he thought it was a fun project.
B. Because he wanted to win a science competition.
C. Because he found skin cancer treatment unaffordable.
D. Because he wanted to create a unique soap for everyone.
25. What can we learn from Bekele's preparations for the final
A. Well begun is half done. B. Learn humbly, ask willingly.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
26. What is Paragraph 4 of the text mainly about
A. What features the soap has. B. How the soap is used.
C. What chemicals the soap contains. D. How the soap is produced.
27. Which words can be used to describe Bekele according to the passage
A. Brave and talented. B. Friendly and ambitious.
C. Cautious and generous. D. Caring and devoted.

Is modern fruit bred to be sweeter than in the past The short answer is yes, though the longer answer is more complicated. Some of the most powerful evidence that fruit is sweeter than before comes from zoos.
In 2018, it was reported that Melbourne Zoo in Australia had stopped giving fruit to most of its animals because cultivated fruit was now so sweet that it was causing tooth decay and weight gain. The monkeys at the zoo were provided with a lower-sugar vegetable-based diet instead of bananas.
Among fruit breeders, the word "quality" is now routinely used as a synonym for "high in sugar" (though firmness, color and size are also considerations). In 2010, in an article looking at ways to enhance the sweetness of fruit using "molecular(分子的)approaches", a group of plant scientists of the Republic of Korea wrote that "in general, the sugar content" of many fruits is now higher than before "owing to continuous selection and breeding". Modern apple varieties, the scientists noted, were on average sweeter than older cultivars.
Breeding isn't the only reason that modern fruit is sweeter; there's also climate change. Research from Japan found that since the 1970s, with rising temperatures, Fuji apples(which were already a sweet variety)have become significantly sweeter and softer. The lead researcher, Toshihoko Sugiura, said that "if you could taste an apple harvested 30 years ago, you would feel the difference".
It is sometimes claimed that the sweetness of modern fruit is not due to higher sugar content so much as the fact that the bitterness and sourness of wild fruit have been steadily bred out of it. There's a grain—but only a grain—of truth in this. Studies of wild apples do indeed suggest that some ancient varieties were just as high in sugar as a modern Pink Lady or Honeycrisp. The difference is that there was much wider variation in sugar content across wild apples, whereas the modern supermarket apple seldom drops below a certain level of sweetness.
28. Why did Melbourne Zoo stop giving fruit to most of its animals
A. The animals preferred a vegetable-based diet.
B. Modern fruit did great harm to animals' teeth.
C. The sugar content of modern fruit is lower than before.
D. The flavor of modern fruit was not good for the animals.
29. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. The sugar content is breeders' first priority.
B. Sweeter fruits are just a result of natural selection.
C. The sweetness of modern apples is equal to the average of older ones.
D. Molecular approaches can be used to increase the sweetness of modern fruit.
30. What do studies of wild apples in the last paragraph suggest
A. Apples of old species tasted less sweet.
B. The sugar content of wild apples varied greatly.
C. The sweetness of modern apples is of the same level
D. Fruit is sweet because bitterness in it has been removed.
31. What's the best title for this passage
A. Modern or Old: Which Is Better B. Modern Fruit: Sweetness Is Quality
C. Fruit Is Sweeter: It's Not a Misconception D. Melbourne Zoo: Animals Stop Eating Fruits

Now, researchers have developed a robotic leg with artificial muscles. A new muscle-powered robotic leg is not only more energy efficient than a conventional one, it can also perform high jumps and fast movements as well as detect and react to barriers—all without the need for complex sensors.
The researchers compared the energy efficiency of their robotic leg with that of a conventional robotic leg powered by an electric motor. They analyzed energy conversion to heat. "It's easy to see that the motorised leg consumes much more energy if, say, it has to hold a bent position," one researcher called Buchner says. The electro-hydraulic(电液的)leg's temperature remains the same as it's electrostatic(静电的). "It's like the example with the balloon and the hair, where the hair stays stuck to the balloon for quite a long time," Buchner adds. Electric motor robots need heat management, but this system doesn't.
Unlike electric motors that need sensors, the artificial muscle adjusts position through interaction with the environment. It has two input signals. "When a person lands after jumping into the air, they don't have to think in advance about whether they should bend their knees at a 90-degree or a 70-degree angle." The same principle applies to the soft robotic leg's inner system: upon landing, the leg joint adaptively moves into a suitable angle depending on whether the surface is hard or soft.
Keplinger, another Buchner's colleague, says. "Compared to walking robots with electric motors, our system is still limited. The leg is currently attached to a rod(杆), jumps in circles and can't yet move freely. " Future work should overcome these limitations, opening the door to developing real walking robots with artificial muscles. He further explains, "If we combine the robotic leg in a four-leg robot or a humanoid robot with two legs, maybe one day, when it is battery-powered, we can use it as a rescue robot."
32. What does Paragraph 1 tell us about the robotic leg with artificial muscles
A. Its potential drawbacks. B. Its complex systems.
C. Its distinct advantages. D. Its wonderful working principles.
33. What does Paragraph 2 focus on about the new muscle-powered robotic leg
A. Its advantages and disadvantages. B. Its heat management.
C. Its way of charging. D. Its efficiency.
34. What is particularly important for soft robotics according to Paragraph 3
A. High adaptability. B. Soft surface.
C. Reliable energy. D. Input signals.
35. What can we infer from Keplinger's words in the last paragraph
A. Technology changes our understanding of robots.
B. Emerging technology opens up new possibilities.
C. Our lives in the 21st century are changed by robots.
D. Artificial muscles ensure the disabled a bright future.

When I was 46, my husband Jerry suggested that I go skiing with him, promising, "You will love it! This is just the first step. "Not on my life! You know I can't stand being cold." I didn't mention my fear of chairlifts and heights: "You go and have fun, sweetheart!"
So, Jerry went skiing with his nephew and other new skiers. More trips followed with increasing excitement. Yet, I couldn't ignore their genuine joy in skiing nor the positive changes in Jerry. I began to feel guilty. Didn't I-owe something to this sport and to my husband Shouldn't I at. least try it
"What " my friends asked in surprise when I said I was considering skiing. "You're 46 years old! You're going to break a leg." Though they reflected my own fears, I took up my courage to, take my first step: I: told Jerry I might try skiing. Thus, he immediately. planned a trip. just for the two of us.
Though filled with fear, I couldn't hide my excitement as we drove to California's Big Bear Mountain Resort(度假胜地). After checking in, Jerry's blue eyes sparkled(闪光)as he signed me up for the next day's beginner class.
The following morning, after fitting me with rental ski boots, leading me to the instructor, and kissing me quickly, Jerry rushed to the nearest ski lift. I stood in a straight line with all the other beginners, like ducks in a row, and listened to the ski instructor. Last in line at the upper end, I tried to appear invisible until the unthinkable happened: I lost my balance and fell. I tried to follow instructions, but my feet, which I couldn't feel, refused to cooperate. I could only turn in one direction—left.
Worse, I couldn't remember what to do with my skis when I needed to stop, so I just fell over. And I kept forgetting the rule: "Never point your skis downhill when trying to get up." One time, I just lay there, exhausted. "I hate skiing!" I whispered, finally getting upright.
