World's longest bicycle
A team of eight engineering fans in the Netherlands (荷兰) has broken the record for the world's longest bicycle. Built in the village of Prinsenbeek in the Netherlands, the bicycle measures 55.16 metres— about as long as two blue whales, according to Guinness World Records!
The team beat the record set in 2020 by Australian Bernie Ryan, whose bicycle was 47.5 metres long. Led by 39-year-old Ivan Schalk, the project began in 2018. He said, “I have been dreaming about it since I first read about the record in The Guinness Book of World Records as a child.”
To break the record, the team needed to build a bike with two wheels, one behind the other. It had to be steered(操纵) with handlebars attached to the front wheel, and powered by one person pedaling.
The team built the front and back parts of the bicycle themselves, including the very wide wheels. But the long central frame (框架) was made by a company called Unlimited Productions, owned by an old school friend of Schalk's. The team said, “The frame is long enough to be used as a bridge over the local highway!”
Two team members were needed to ride the finished bicycle: one steering at the front and the other pedaling at the back. On April 3oth, 2024, they broke the record by riding the bicycle for a distance of
100 metres.
The same team had already broken the world record for the longest tandem bicycle(多人自行车) in 2023, by adding more pedals and travelling the same distance with more riders.
The world's longest bicycle can now be seen in Prinsenbeek's local history museum.

Story about shopping carts
Before the 1930s, shopping carts(购物车)didn't exist because nobody needed them. With almost no home refrigeration except for iceboxes, people bought a day's worth of food at a time, usually at different stores, such as fish shops, vegetable shops and meat shops. The rise of supermarkets changed all that.
Sylvan Goldman, who owned a chain of supermarkets in Oklahoma City, noticed that when customers in his stores used handheld baskets, they often stopped shopping when the baskets became too full or too heavy. He told his staff to approach people whose baskets were full and offer them another basket while holding the full one at the checkout counter(收银台). It was not an effective solution, so Goldman searched for something better.
One evening in 1936, inspiration came as Goldman worked late in his office. He looked at a folding chair and had the idea of replacing the seat with two shelves(搁架) — one higher and one lower than the seat's usual position — and adding wheels to the legs. The shelves would hold shopping baskets, which could be taken off when not in use.
After several tries, Goldman built some carts and introduced them in his stores in the following summer. However, they were not popular with customers. Most housewives said they didn't want a cart because they already had a baby carriage(婴儿推车). And the man would say, “You mean, with my big strong arm, I can't carry a small basket like that ”
Goldman was not discouraged. He had people of all ages pose as (假扮) customers and use the carts. The trick worked, and customers began to give them a try. Within a few years, shopping carts were everywhere. During the 1940s, shopping carts got most of the features we are familiar with today.
