三、阅读理解(共38分)
A
You’ve raced to the supermarket only to realise you’ve left the shopping list home. You need to memorise which groceries to pick up before you forget. Thankfully, there’s a memory aid that’s perfect for the job: the peg-word method.
What is the peg-word method
It employs a set of pre-determined words, regarded as peg words, for the to-be-remembered information. Peg words act as a structure to help you remember particular items. Essentially, you’re hanging information you need to recall on these pegs, which allows it to be recalled quickly and easily.
Initially, to use this method, you will have to remember the peg words as well as the numbers:
one=bun two= shoe three=tree four= door five= hive six= sticks seven= heaven eight= gate nine =vine ten= hen
The next step is to create associations between the information you need to remember and the item linked with the corresponding number. If the first item, for instance, is milk, then you need to visualise the milk and a bun (小圆面包) together. The more unusual you can make your image, the more likely you are to remember it. In this case, you could imagine a bun drinking a glass of milk.
Why is it useful
As the case shows, it is most useful when it comes to remembering lists and you can recall the listed items easily in order. Another way to use this memory aid is to memorise important numbers, like phone numbers or dates. For instance, you need to remember that William Shakespeare was born in the year 1564. First, change that number to bun-hive-sticks-door. Then imagine a story to help you remember the series:
William Shakespeare put a bun in a beehive to coat it in honey, but he didn’t like how sticky it became so he threw it at a door.
The peg-word method has been wildly recognized as a helpful memory aid. For more information, please visit https://jojomemory.com/.
21. How can we apply the peg-word method to recall an item
A. List out different meanings of the item.
B. Visualise the item and memorize its image.
C. Choose the item’s peg word and remember it.
D. Create a visual link between the item and its peg word.
22. What is the best way to remember the number 347 with the peg words in the table
A. A hen drinks from a bottle of wine.
B. A load of eggs grow like fruit on a tree.
C. A tree grows through the door to heaven.
D. An apple shoots out of a bun and hits the door.
23. What is the purpose of this passage
A. To introduce a helpful memory tool.
B. To advertise a brain training program.
C. To highlight the importance of peg words.
D. To analyze the necessity of training memory.
B
When I was thirteen years old, I became very interested in shopping. After a while being just a buyer, I wanted to sell something. I had many things around the house from my childhood that I no longer needed. I knew, with the help of my father, I could make money. So far months and months I enjoyed myself by selling things on my dad’s account (账户).
On December 9, 2020, I opened my own account and began to start my own business. Things were going great and then I realized that selling things around house wasn’t making me the kind of money that I wanted to make, so I decided to turn my business into a resale shop. I went around to the garage sale (旧货出售处) and bought items at low prices and sold them at higher prices.
Last November, I went to a garage sale that was a little bit different. A single lady had many nice items that I knew I would sell quickly. I went up to her and started a conversation with her. Through the conversation, I knew she was jobless at the moment and needed money to support her family. I decided to sell any of her things for her to help her out. She looked at me for a moment and then broke into tears. I took away some of her things and over the next month I made over $1,500 for her! She was so thankful for all of my help.
I have never felt so happy to help someone in my life. I felt as if I had made a difference in this world and that my skills could be used to help someone who would really need it.
24. At first, __________ helped her make money by selling things.
A. the girl’s bank B. the girl’s father
C. the girl’s teacher D. a single lady
25. The author (作者) went to the garage sale to __________.
A. meet single ladies B. sell things she no longer needed
C. help others D. buy things for her resale shop
26. The author decided to help the lady sell her things because __________.
A. the lady’s items were nice B. the lady lived a hard life
C. she liked the lady very much D. the lady asked the author for help
27. The lady felt so __________for what the author had done for her.
A. disappointed B. amazed C. proud D. thankful
C
Almost everyone has heard the expression, “the calm before the storm.” It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument.
British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s; they noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become static and the winds would drop. But why is it often so calm before a storm
Science has given us the answer. According to a US website How Stuff Works, a calm period occurs because many storms, such as tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and humid air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm like petrol in a car”. Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm cloud sand falls back down to ground level. As the air descends (下降), it becomes warm and dry. Warm, dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm. This same process also causes the “eye of the storm” in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong rotating(旋转的) winds.
The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First, count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder. Roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about 3 kilometers away. A good gauge(评估) is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek safe place straight away.
However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms come after calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and chilling (寒冷的) winds. So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That’s the most reliable and sensible way to predict the next display of nature’s temper.
28. The underlined word “static” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.
A. violent B. quiet C. fast-changing D. warm
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly talking about
A. To explain how a storm comes into being.
B. To support previous research on storm clouds.
C. To explain why a peaceful period occurs before a storm.
D. To show how dangerous a storm can be in certain situations.
30 What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. It is not always quiet before a storm. B. Storms have a big influence on life.
C. Weather reports may fail to predict a storm. D. Heavy storms don’t usually last for a longtime.
D
The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphones, writing by hand has become something of a nostalgic (怀旧的) skill. However, while today’s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful — both in school and in life.
Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it’s important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.
Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks — both on a computer and by hand. The study, published last year, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.
In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write. “Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active, which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas,” Berninger said.
“Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe (转换) those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. “Seeing the words in the “mind’s eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words,” says Berninger, “but also to find out spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time.”
“In our computer age, some people believe that we don’t have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won’t have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.”
31. What makes writing by hand a thing of the past
A. The importance of writing by hand.
B. The lack of practice in handwriting.
C. The use of new technologies like computers and smartphones.
D. The belief that handwriting skills are unnecessary for success.
32. Which of the following best shows the role of spelling
A. Spelling improves one’s long-run memory of words.
B. Spelling ability is closely connected to writing ability.
C. Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas.
D. Spelling slows down finding right words to express ideas.
33. What does the underlined expression “mind’s eye” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Wind. B. Spirit. C. Imagination. D. Picture.
34. What conclusion could be drawn from the passage
A. Handwriting still has a place in today’s classrooms.
B. Spell checks can take the place of spelling teaching.
C. Computers can help people with their choice of words.
D. Functional spelling ability develops fast in the fifth grade.

People from different generations often live and work together. Sometimes they’re happy being together, other times they’re not. One of the reasons for their unhappiness maybe a generation gap. A generation gap is the difference between two or more generations—not the differences between their years but the differences between the generations’ ideas, attitudes, and interests. Of course, people can have differences and still be happy together, but according to the experts, communication between the generations helps everyone get along.
Good communication between the generations starts in the family. These days many families are changing their communication style. They are moving from a “one-way” style to a “two-way” style of communication. To show this change, let’s compare two families:
The Smith family uses the “one-way” style of communication. Mr. and Mrs. Smith show interest in their children, but they don’t discuss problems of feelings. The parents make all the rules and decisions. They don’t ask for their children’s opinions. They explain their decisions to their children, but they don’t discuss them. The explanation is clear and the children understand. The communication goes one way: from the parents to the children.
The Jones family uses the “two-way” style of communication. Mr. and Mrs. Jones show interest in their children and ask for their opinions. They discuss problems and express their feelings. The family makes rules and decisions together after a discussion. The communication goes two ways: from parents to children and from children to parents.
Better communication between generations at home means better communication between generations at work and in the community. When people from different generations understand each other better, they learn from each other more. This helps them form stronger bonds, work together more easily. As a result, people of all ages can team up effectively and come up with new ideas in different parts of life.

【答案】Dear Wang Mei,
I’m writing to give you some suggestions on how to learn English well.
First of all, why not listen to the teacher carefully and take notes in class If you do these, you can go over your lessons after class. What’s more, you’d better spend half an hour reciting words every morning because vocabulary plays an important part in English learning. Finally, I’d like to suggest you keep an English diary every day, which helps improve your written English.
I hope these suggestions will be of use to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
