Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict,” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled (皱的).” Today David wears casual clothes — khaki pants and a sports shirt to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie (领带). “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the changes from formal to casual office wear have been slow. In the early1990s, many companies allowed their workers to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or“casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for workers has really become an everyday thing,” said business adviser Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their workers to wear casual clothes One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new workers if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study made by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that casual dress has a side effect on work. Supporters of casual office wear also say that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”
24. How have David Smith’s daily clothes changed in the past five years
A. He started wearing neckties every day.
B. He stopped wearing clothes due to comfort concerns.
C. He changed from expensive suits to more casual clothing.
D. He began carrying multiple suits to work for daily changes.
25. What can we infer from paragraph 2 about “dress-down Friday”
A. It was initially established to improve employees’ work efficiency.
B. It has now become the daily dress code for most office workers.
C. It was promoted by the US government in the early 1990s.
D. It originally started as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees.
26. What is the main advantage of a casual dress code according to the supporters
A. It makes the workplace more relaxed.
B. It helps employees save money on clothing.
C. It increases employee motivation and productivity.
D. It allows employees to express their individuality.
27. What is the passage about
A. The reason for workers’ increased casual clothes at work in the U. S.
B. The development of casual clothing in the U. S.
C. The correct office dress codes in the U. S.
D. The advantages of wearing casual clothing in the U. S.
C
Climate change is reshaping the U. S., as journalist Jake Bittle explains in his new book, The Great Displacement: “Each passing year brings disasters that disfigure new parts of the United States, and these disasters alter the course of human lives, pushing people from one place to another, destroying old communities and forcing new ones to emerge.”
The first section of Bittle’s book focuses on the Florida Keys. Bittle profiles Patrick Garvey, who bought a neglected grove(疏于打理的小树林) on Big Pine Key, and fixed it up into “a real community resource” that grew fruits rare in the continental U. S. Then came Hurricane Irma. Patrick and some friends decided to stay on the island during the storm, and ended up sheltering at a nearby school. They survived — a dozen people in the Keys didn’t — but the grove wasn’t as lucky
Patrick’s story is a heartbreaking one. Bittle strikes a pessimistic note about the future of the Keys’ ability to sustain human life. “Many of the islands in the archipelago(群岛), perhaps all of them, could go underwater altogether by the end of this century,” he writes. Some Keys residents decided to stay after Irma; others, unable to bear the thought of going through that kind of trauma(创伤) again, left.
In his book, Bittle covers the people whose lives have been altered by climate change with real sympathy. He explores why people stay or leave areas affected by climate change, pointing that economic inequality often prevents relocation, even if it were easy for them to simply pack up and leave behind the places where they’ve spent their whole lives. He’s an empathetic writer, but also one with a real gift for explaining the tough issues — economic, scientific and political — that make the climate crisis and its effect on the population so complex.
Climate change is affecting not only the U. S., but the whole world, and if you are itching for more on the situation, this book really is a must - read.
28. What does the underlined word “disfigure” mean in the first paragraph
A. Beautify. B. Enhance. C. Destroy. D. Improve.
29. How did Patrick Garvey transform the neglected grove on Big Pine Key
A. He turned it into a luxury resort.
B. He transformed it into a fruit grove.
C. He sold it to a developer for profit.
D. He left it as it was and moved away.
30. What factor does Bittle mention as a barrier to people relocating due to climate change
A. Lack of transportation options. B. Cultural attachment to their homes.
C. Fear of the unknown. D. Economic inequality.
31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To honor an environmentalist on climate change.
B. To learn about the author’s personal experiences.
C. To recommend a book on climate change.
D. To find solutions to climate change.

With more and more kids picking up bats and gloves, efforts to build a “baseball ecosystem” in China continue to produce impressive results. And with Major League Baseball (MLB) a key contributor to the drive, Chinese kids are learning from the very best in the business.
“The baseball environment has changed greatly since MLB entered the Chinese market. When we first came to China in 2007, the baseball population in the country was very limited,” said Tony Qi, managing director of MLB China. “But in 2019, the active baseball population had reached over 20 million. When we first organized the youth baseball match in five Chinese cities in 2008, each city had only one age group to take part. But this year we have 20 cities, and in some cities we have competitions for five age groups.”
Around 400 teams have taken part in the MLB China Cup, a nationwide youth competition designed to encourage kids to take up baseball. During one recent season in Beijing, there were about 100 teams that wanted to take part in the MLB Cup. So, MLB, the Chinese Baseball Association and local baseball organizations are all working together for a brighter Chinese baseball future.
Audiences have also been attracted by the 2020 documentary Tough Out, which tells the lives of a group of Chinese teenagers whose lives are changed through baseball. “In the documentary, the kids build a new home in their baseball team, together with their coaches in a Beijing suburb,” said Qi. “The notion (观念) of home is very important in baseball culture. Through baseball, these kids gained home, friendship and confidence. They also gained the courage to fight against the hard situations they found themselves in. We’re planning to produce more content like this to make baseball culture popular.”
32. How does the author show the great change of baseball environment in China
A. By sorting out the facts. B. By listing benefits.
C. By making comparisons. D. By stressing importance.
33. Why is the MLB China Cup designed
A. To show Chinese baseball future.
B. To inspire kids to learn baseball.
C. To award more prizes to the youth.
D. To work with local baseball organizations.
34 What do we know about the 2020 documentary Tough Out

Find your productivity cycles. People’s ability to complete certain tasks is different based on a great many factors such as the time of day. For example, it may be the case that you’re best able to concentrate on difficult tasks early in the morning, before you’ve started dealing with emails or minor administrative aspects of your job. ____40____

33. Why is the MLB China Cup designed
A. To show Chinese baseball future.
B. To inspire kids to learn baseball.

A. It attracts more people to live in Beijing suburbs.
B. It gives kids courage to take part in baseball matches.

【答案】
Dear Peter,
I’m sorry to hear about your recent experience with your Chinese translation assignment. It’s understandable to feel upset but remember that AI is a tool that aids learning rather than replacing our efforts.
I suggest using it as a tool rather than a substitute. AI-assisted learning can be very helpful, but it should complement your own understanding and effort. Perhaps you could use AI to check your work or for inspiration, but always ensure that your final submission reflects your own understanding and effort.
Stay positive, keep practicing, and I’m confident you’ll improve in no time.
Yours,
Li Hua
