In the Spring and Autumn period, a man from State Chu once got an unusual pearl (珍珠) from a big river. He decided to sell it.
The man thought, “I will sell the pearl for more money if it has a good-looking box.” So he made a wooden box at home and decorated (装饰) it with precious (贵重的) stones and beautiful feathers (羽毛). Then he put the pearl into the box and went to the market.
A man from State Zheng saw the beautiful box. He liked the box and decided to buy it. He took out the pearl and gave it back to the man from State Chu.
“I will take the box only. The pearl is useless to me. You can keep it for yourself.” the man from State Zheng said. He paid for the box and went away happily.
The man from State Chu could not understand this. He thought, “The man paid so much only for the box. Why didn’t he take the pearl ”

There was a big tiger long ago, and it lived in the wild near a village. It often attacked people. Because of this, the people dug a big hole in the ground and covered it with grass to catch the tiger.
One day, a man found the big tiger in the hole. The tiger said to the man, “Help me get out of this hole! 21 If you help me, I’ll protect you when you’re in the wild.”

A duck is very sad because he looks different from all the other ducks. They don’t want to play with him and they think he is very ugly. But when he grows up, he is surprised to find himself a handsome young swan (天鹅)! This is the story of The Ugly Duckling by Danish (丹麦) writer Hans Christian Andersen.
In fact, Andersen was an “ugly duckling” himself. In 1805, he was born in a poor family in Odense, Denmark. Andersen was tall, ugly and had a very big nose. His friends always made fun of his big nose.
Later, because of his father’s death, Andersen had to make a living (谋生) by himself. He had a hard life and tried different kinds of jobs. For example, he once worked as a dressmaker and made money in a theater. The difficulties helped him to write. He started writing in the year 1832 and wrote many famous fairy tales such as The Emperor’s New Clothes and so on. He kept writing for 43 years, till the end of his life in 1875. In his life, he finished 168 works and we can read them in about 150 languages. They never stop bringing happiness to kids around the world.
