Toni Morrison was an American writer who received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her novels—— Beloved, Song of Solomon and others explored the way African-Americans search for freedom and identity in a country obsessed with skin color. Morrison was nearly 40 when she published her first novel The Bluest Eye in 1970. The Nobel Prize committee described her writing as language itself, a language she wants to liberate(解放) from race. Her novels discussed America's past, focusing on black history and the effects of slavery and racism. She called her characters"the unfree at the heart of the democratic experiment".
In 1988, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Beloved, the story of a mother who kills her baby daughter rather than permit her to be born into slavery. It became a best-seller and was later made into a film with Oprah Winfrey. Many Americans admired her as the country's greatest living writer, including former President Barack Obama.
She was born in 1931. She attended Howard University, an all-black university in Washington, D. C.. At Howard, she read African, British and American literature, including writers William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf. After a short marriage, she became a single mother of two sons and worked as a book editor in New York.
Several publishers rejected her first book The Bluest Eye, but it impressed The New York Times book critic John Leonard, who believed Morrison was an important new voice. He said her writing was"so charged with pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry".

If a child is playing sport, they should have fun. However,I believe learning that sometimes you lose is just as important.
There is a school of thought that if children are playing for fun, they should not keep score, which seems a bit backwards to me. Participation is great, but let's also give them a goal to reach.
Sport has winners and losers, which is an important part of its make-up. I believe the greatest joy you can get from sport is when you play hard and produce a win, when you and your tammates work together for your goal.
I am a competitive person, but I don't think you' re ever too young to start learning that putting effort into something can result in reward. I'm not saying winning should be the be-all and end-all of the experience for children, but it should at least be a choice.
Michael Jordan once said. "I' ve missed more than 9,000 shots· in my career. I' ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I' ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I' ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. "
Without learning how it feels to win, and just as importantly how it feels to lose, we will bring up children who expect life to be easy.
Life is not easy and I believe the sooner children learn that, the better off they are in the long run. But, there does need to be a balance. There are parents who always want to see their children win and will punish them when they make mistakes.
I believe the key is to teach children that they should give their all in an effort to be victorious. It does need to be fun or they won't be interested, but they should be graceful(优雅的) in failure. Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is an example of someone who appears to have gone too far the other way, always in the news for his terrible attitude on court.
53. Which of the following will the author agree with
A. Fewer kids play sport nowadays.
B It is participation that matters most.
C. Competitive sport is important for kids.
D. Kids often have unrealistic goals in sport.
54. What does the author want to show by using Jordan's words
A. Life lies in sport.
B. Nothing is impossible.
C. Great hopes make great men.
D. Failure is the mother of success.
55. What will winning and losing in sport teach children
A. The difficulty of life. B. The role of hard work.
C. The power of teamwork. D. The need for dreaming big.
56. What does the author think of Nick Kyrgios
A. He is not skilled. B. He is not graceful.
C. He sets a good example for kids. D. He pays little attention to success.
D
In 1957, Max Vernon Mathews wrote the first computer program called Music, which enabled a computer to create sound and play it back. He was then working as an engineer at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. It enabled a large IBM computer to play a seventeen second piece of music he had written.
The computer was so slow that it took an hour to play the seventeen second piece of music. So Mathews moved the work to a tape player to play the music at a normal speed. He later said that the sound quality of the musical notes was not great, but the technical importance of the music was huge.
The science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke visited Bell Laboratories in the 1960s. He heard a computer"sing"the song Daisy Bell on devices(设备) and learned about the programs developed by Mathews and other engineers. Clarke noted this technology in his book 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was later made into a movie.
Mathews continued creating other versions of the Music program. He became interested in how computers could help musicians outside recording studios. The Groove program he developed was the first computer program made for live performances.
He also developed an electronic device he called the Radio Baton, which looks like two drum sticks. It enables the user to control the speed and sound levels of orchestral music(管弦乐) played on a computer by moving the two sticks on a special electronic surface.
Mathews said he believed modern musicians were not making full use of the power of computer music. He said a violin always sounds like a violin. But with his Music, the way a violin sounds is unlimited. He did not want computer sounds to replace live music, but he hoped computers would one day be considered serious instruments.
57. Why did Clarke visit Bell Laboratories
A. To make his book into a movie.
B To help Mathews develop Music.
C. To satisfy his own curiosity about music.
D. To gather materials for his literary creation.
58. What electronic music tools did Mathews create
5. Something used to record live music.
B. Something used to create special sound.
C. Something used to improve computer music.
D. Something used to create computer music.

B. It can help make more sounds.
C. It will finally replace the violin.
D It is more popular than live music.

The Lomax family needed a dog. Though their house was already full with seven people, they knew a dog would truly make the house a home. So they settled on a dog whom they named Jack. It turned out to be the best decision they ever made.
It was Jack's protective instinct(本能) that would save the lives of the Lomax family. If it wasn't for him, the family may never have survived the terrible accident that would eventually befall one cold January day in 2020.
It was a night like many others. Autumn, the family's youngest child and her mother Ashley had settled into bed in one of the bedrooms on the second floor. Jack, who rarely left Autumn's side, had settled in there as well. Little did they know that something terrible was about to happen that night. While the family was fast asleep, a fire had started in one of the other second floor bedrooms. Jack had picked up a whiff(些微的气味) of smoke in the next room. In an instant, the brave dog jumped into action.
The four-legged family member knew something was wrong but had no way of telling his owners. He jumped up Ashley's bed and began touching her face. She pushed him off her bed and tried to roll over but he began again, until she was up.
As soon as she could, Ashley took hold of Autumn and began to move away from the door. She screamed at the top of her lungs as she ran from the room, alerting the rest of the family to the disaster that was taking place. Jack did his part again too, barking loudly. Ashley's screams woke the four other adults and two more children. All of them headed out into the cold January night. In no time, the fire had engulfed(吞没) nearly the entire home, but luckily, all of them had made it out alive, with Jack leading the way.
