There are competitions held all over the world that attract millions of viewers every year. Here are four of the craziest competitions in the world.
Worm (幼虫) Charming Championship
This competition involves contestants using a small area of grass and a number of different methods to try and attract as many worms as possible from the ground in a set amount of time. Participants use everything to make noise in the ground to try and drive the worms out. The current world record is held by 10-year-old Sophie Smith from England, who in 2009 collected 567 worms in 30 minutes.
Toe (脚趾头) Wrestling Competition
The wonderful sport of toe wrestling was first thought up in a pub in Wetton, England, in 1974. Four friends were angry at the fact that the UK never produced any world champions and so created a sport that they could succeed in. The competition has gained in popularity and there is a regular world championship held in Ashbourne, England, every year. It’s very similar to arm wrestling and sees competitors lock toes and wrestle until one of them “pins” the other’s foot for 3 seconds.
World Beard and Moustache Championship
The competition has been running since petitors come from all over the world to see who can grow and style the best beard and moustache. The competition actually has 17 different categories, including Best Freestyle Moustache, Best Natural Goatee and the all-time classic: Best Natural Full Beard and Styled Moustache.
Sauna (桑拿浴) Championship
The World Sauna Championships were held in Heinola Finland and ran from 1999 to 2010. The crazy competition saw contestants sit in a sauna for as long as possible, with the winner being the last person standing (or rather sitting and sweating). The starting temperature was 110 degrees and water would be poured onto the stove every 30 seconds. The competition came to an end in 2010, though, when tragedy struck and one of the contestants died during the event and another was severely injured.
1. What does the text say about Worm Charming Championship
A. It has no time limit. B. Its records are broken frequently.
C. It has no requirement for tools used. D. Its participants are mainly teenagers.
2. Why was Toe Wrestling Competition created

An African penguin named Mr. Greedy died at Baltimore’s Maryland Zoo last week at the age of 33, surpassing his species’ median life expectancy of 18 years. His secret to longevity Fathering lots of penguins, apparently.
Zoo officials said Mr. Greedy helped rebuild the penguin population at zoos across North America. Doing his part to promote the survival of his endangered species, he left behind 230 descendants (子孙) and five generations of offspring as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums African Penguin Species Survival Plan.
Mr. Greedy was put to death painlessly following an age-related decline in his health. Jen Kottyan, leader of the survival program, said in a statement, “It’s tough to lose an animal who has been such a welcome presence at our zoo for three decades. This bird was incredibly important to the continued existence of African penguins throughout the world.”
Mr. Greedy also left behind his lifelong mate, Mrs. Greedy. Both birds hatched in 1991 and arrived at the Zoo the following year. The pair had been together since 1994, when they hit reproductive age. Mrs. Greedy is now the Zoo’s oldest penguin. Mr. Greedy earned his name due to his stealing habit. He frequently stole nesting materials and food from others. Mrs. Greedy, who joined her partner in such behaviors, also lives up to her nickname.
In the wake of the loss of her partner, zookeepers are monitoring Mrs. Greedy’s heath. “Her behavior will determine what happens next,” Kottyan said. “On condition that she shows interest, the Zoo will pair her with a single male in the colony (群体) as a companion.”
The wild population of African penguins, native to South Africa and Namibia, has declined by75% over the past 20 years, according to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, mostly due to the fact that they have great difficulty filling their stomachs. The species’ numbers, once in the millions, have also dropped because of overfishing, human disturbance of nesting grounds, pollution and climate change.
4. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. Mr. Greedy’s reproductive ability.
B. Great contributions made by Mr. Greedy.
C. The number of Mr. Greedy’s descendants.
D. The African Penguin Species Survival Plan.
5. What will the Zoo do for Mrs. Greedy
A. Return her to the wild. B. Move her to another colony.
C. Accompany her day and night. D. Find a partner for her if she likes.
6. What’s the leading cause of the decline of wild African penguins
A. Rising sea levels. B. Insufficient food supply.
C. Shortage of nesting grounds. D. Worsening weather conditions.
7. What can be known about Mr. Greedy from the text
A. He died a natural death. B. He used to commit thefts alone.
C He was born and raised in the Zoo. D. He was thought highly of by Kottyan.
C
The vast majority of people in the UK have access to a smartphone. Therefore, they try to access TikTok, YouTube, Netflix, and pretty much any other kind of digital media they could possibly want, at any time. As one poster put it on Twitter: “Can’t seem to sleep. Let’s see if the bright light of my phone containing all the information in the entire world held inches away from my face for the next 15 minutes manages to help me fall into a peaceful sleep.”
In theory, being able to access information or entertainment so easily means we should never be bored. But as the University of Toronto’s Katy Y. Y. Tam and Michael Inzlicht explored in a new paper, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, switching between lots of different online content could be making us more, not less, bored.
After an initial study, which confirmed that people are more likely to rapidly switch between shortform videos when they feel more bored, the team conducted further experiments to understand how digital scrolling (滚屏) impacts boredom.
In the first experiment, participants in the no-switching condition watched a ten-minute, unskippable video; those in the switching condition were provided with seven five-minute videos they could skip whenever they wanted. After the ten minutes were up, they reported how bored they felt. Those who couldn’t switch between videos reported being significantly less bored than those who could, and also rated their experience as more satisfying, engaging, and meaningful. These results were repeated in a further study, in which some participants could switch back and forth in time during one video and others had to watch it in one go.
Next, the team took their experiment to the more naturalistic setting of YouTube. After selecting a video at least nine minutes long, some participants were again told they could skip back and forth, while others were told that they had to watch the video through. Again, participants were less bored in the no-switching condition, though there was no difference in satisfaction, attention, or meaningfulness.
Overall, the results suggest a great difference between what we think will help with our boredom and what actually makes us bored. It feels paradoxical: if something feels boring, then it makes sense that we’d jump to something else; but, in reality, this doesn’t seem to do the job.
8. Why does the author mention the poster in paragraph 1
A. To show British people’s expectations of smartphones.
B. To stress how dependent the British are on smartphones.
C. To display one of the potential benefits of digital media.
D. To indicate how aware the British are of their phone use.
9. What were the participants asked to do during the experiment
A. They chose to watch their favorite videos.
B. They recorded the frequency of their watching videos.
C. They reported their feelings after they watched videos.
D. They communicated their ideas on switching between videos.
10. What does the underlined word “paradoxical” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Contradictory. B. Reasonable. C. Complex. D. Troublesome.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Why Scrolling Isn’t a Cure-All for Boredom
B. How to Get Pleasure from Watching Videos
C. Scrolling through Videos Increases Boredom
D. Watching Videos Less Often Is Actually More

Combining artificial intelligence (AI) with today’s environmental control systems could reduce energy consumption for indoor agriculture by 25%, potentially helping to feed the world as its population rises, Cornell University engineers have found.
The world population is expected to grow to 9.7 billion by 2050, according to the United Nations. This growth, combined with climate change and urbanization, requires fixes for the disadvantages in the world’s present food production systems, the researchers said.
Indoor farming methods, such as plant factories with artificial lighting, are less sensitive to climate change, but are energy-intensive (能源密集型的) and require careful resource management to be sustainable. “Existing environmental control systems are not smart enough,” said Fengqi You, a professor in energy systems engineering at Cornell University.
By using AI techniques like deep reinforcement learning and computational optimization (最优化), the scientists analyzed lettuce grown in indoor farms within diverse places.
AI reduces energy use by optimizing lighting and climate regulation systems. Energy use dropped to 6.42 kilowatt hours per kilogram of fresh weight (energy needed or used to produce one kilogram of indoor-grown lettuce) from 9.5 kilowatt hours per kilogram of fresh weight, in places that use non-AI technology. The researchers found that for warmer areas, such as Dubai or the southern U. S. , AI reduced energy usage to 7.26 kilowatt hours per kilogram of fresh weight, down from 10.5 kilowatt hours per kilogram of fresh weight.
Low ventilation (通风) during light periods (16 hours of simulated sunlight) and high ventilation during dark periods (8 hours of simulated night) provided an energy-efficient solution for optimal indoor CO2 levels for photosynthesis, oxygen for respiration (呼吸) and plant growth, and balanced other ventilation requirements.
“This is a very similar concept to smart homes,” You said. “We want to be comfortable at home while reducing energy use; so do crops. This work focuses on a smart system to make food production optimal, sustainable and lower the carbon footprint. That’s what AI does very well. We can save quite a bit if we use AI to optimize the artificial lighting and other energy systems carefully.”
12. What’s the finding of Cornell University engineers
A. AI can help in the fight against climate change.
B. AI can greatly lessen indoor farming energy use.
C. AI can help keep the world population under control.
D. AI can upgrade the existing food production systems.
13. How is paragraph 5 mainly developed
A. By listing examples. B. By analyzing figures.
C. By giving explanations. D. By making comparisons.
14. What’s You’s attitude towards the application of AI in indoor agriculture
A. Unclear. B. Uncaring. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.
15. Where can the text most probably be read
A. In a science report. B. In an introduction to AI.
C. In a biology textbook. D. In an education magazine.

Your mental health influences how you think, feel, and behave in daily life. It also affects your ability to deal with stress, overcome challenges, build relationships, and recover from life’s setbacks and hardships.
Having solid mental health doesn’t mean that you never go through bad times or experience emotional problems. We all go through disappointments, loss and change. These are normal parts of life. ___16___ Just as physically healthy people are better able to bounce back from illness or injury, people with strong mental health are better able to bounce back from adversity (逆境), and stress. This ability is called resilience (适应力).
People who are emotionally and mentally resilient have the tools for dealing with difficult situations and maintaining a positive outlook. ___17___ Their resilience also makes them less afraid of new experiences and an uncertain future. Even when they don’t immediately know how a problem will be solved, they’re hopeful that a solution will eventually be found.
Anyone can suffer from mental or emotional health problems over a lifetime; most of us will. Therefore, mental health problems are quite common. ___18___ We ignore the emotional messages that tell us something is wrong and try toughing it out by distracting (使分心) ourselves. We bottle up our problems in the hope that others won’t notice. ___19___ Or we simply give up—telling ourselves this is “just the way we are.”
___20___ There are practices you can adopt to lift your mood, become more resilient, and enjoy life more. But just as it requires effort to build and maintain physical health, so it does with mental health. We have to work harder these days to ensure strong mental health, simply because there are so many ways that life has a bad effect on our emotional well-being.
A. The good news is that you don’t have to feel bad.
B. Besides developing mental strength is a lifelong journey.
C. However, they can still cause sadness, anxiety, and stress.
D. We hope our situation will eventually improve on its own.
E. However, many of us make no effort to improve our situation.
F. Strong mental health isn’t just the absence of mental health problems.
G. They remain focused, flexible, and productive, both in bad times and good.

In June 2021, Alice and her sister, Emily, took a plane to Budapest. It was a very long journey, with quite a few brief stays along the way. When they finally arrived at the airport in the afternoon, after about 24 hours, the two sisters were both tired and stressed. As a result, they carried their three heavy suitcases, stopped a taxi, got into it and headed to their rented apartment right away.
“We got to the apartment and no check-in instructions had arrived,” Alice said. “The owner was not available at that moment and the phone was powered off all the time.”
Then they tried calling customer service, but not a live person was available, either. They could do nothing but chat with a robot, but their problem was too complicated for the system. It couldn’t get their meaning. The two sisters were getting more and more tired. So Alice used the app to reach out to some of the owners of nearby apartments. “And the third one that I texted said, ’Yes, my apartment is still available. You can go and check in. Here is the code, ’” Alice said.
Immediately, they grabbed their suitcases and started rolling them down the sidewalk toward the new apartment, though they had no idea whether the apartment would suit them. They walked down a block and around the corner. Then they looked up, but what they saw filled them with fear: A series of five staircases, winding up the hill. It meant that they would have to climb to reach the street with their apartment building.

The World Sauna Championships were held in Heinola, Finland and ran from 1999 to 2010.

B. Besides, developing mental strength is a lifelong journey.
C. However, they can still cause sadness, anxiety, and stress.

【答案】One possible version:
As soon as they saw that, Emily just wanted to cry. The thought of dragging their heavy suitcases up those endless stairs seemed like an impossible task, especially after such a long and exhausting journey. But Alice put a comforting arm around her sister’s shoulder. “Come on, Emily. We’ve faced something worse than this. Let’s take it one step at a time. Together, we can do this.” With renewed determination, the sisters began the climb, each step a testament to their resilience and sisterly bond. As they reached the apartment building, breathless and sweaty, they looked at each other and grinned, knowing they had overcome yet another obstacle.
Opening the door of the apartment, they knew everything was worthwhile. The room was clean, with modern furniture and a cozy atmosphere. Sunlight streamed in through the windows, casting warm golden rays across the room. Best of all, the apartment was situated in a quiet neighborhood, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Alice and Emily exchanged a look of relief, knowing that despite the challenges they had faced, they had found a haven in this unfamiliar city. As they settled in, they couldn’t help but feel grateful for the kindness of strangers and the strength of their own perseverance.
