Bianca Mavrick’s first attempt in the jewellery world was as an enterprising (有创业精神的) 10-year-old, selling seashell carrings at the Clevcland markets.
Now the 28-year-old has her own studio in Moorooka, in Brisbane’s south, and her handmade designs enjoy worldwide popularity among fans. “It’s amazing to be selling internationally. When you do a creative business, you’re going to have to work hard and it will take a few years to get off the ground, but it’s really growing fast now,” she says.
Bianca opened her online store in 2014. Production happens in her studio, with help from one staff member and sometimes her grandma. “My grandma enjoys sitting with the girls. She acts as a kind of quality controller and helps with packing and putting bar codes (条形码) on things.” Bianca says. Bianca laughs as she recalls looking through her grandmother’s pile of costume jewellery as a child. “She had an amazing collection and I was allowed to have some of the broken pieces and fix them up to sell alongside the shell earrings on my stand,” she says.
Mum and Dad opened an account for me and put the profits away. Even then I knew I wanted to work with jewellery. All of my hobbies always related back to my jewellery. I’m always looking for inspiration, whether I’m visiting an art gallery or looking at furniture for my apartment.
Next month Bianca will join other talented Queensland artists and designers to show his creations at the MAYO Arts Festival, named after well-known Australian sculptor Daphne Mayo. “It’s really exciting to be a part of it,” she says, “It will enable me to meet my clients, too, which is always great because having an online store I can’t normally get to do that. My clients love the unique nature of my designs, as well as the fact that they are handmade, not mass-produced.”
24. What does Bianca think of her business
A. It had a terrible start. B. It leaves a lot to be improved.
C. It is expanding rapidly. D. It aims at foreign clients.
25. What does Bianca’s grandma do in her studio

C. She acts as a spokeswoman. D. She helps with sales promotion.
26. What made Bianca devoted to jewellery
A. The childhood hobbies and talent.
B. The inspiration from her surroundings.
C. The handsome profits in the industry.
D. The family’s influence and support.
27. Why is Bianca excited to attend the festival
A. Her unique designs are likely to become a hit.
B. She can communicate with her clients in person.
C. The festival is to be held by a famous sculptor.
D. Many of her works will be created on the spot.

As China’s cities grow, they are also sinking. An estimated 16 percent of the country’s major cities are losing more than 10 millimeters of height per year and nearly half are losing more than 3 millimeters per year, according to a new study published in the journal Science.
“Land subsidence (下沉) is a problem that almost exists everywhere,” said Robert Nicholls, a climate scientist and civil engineer at the University of East Anglia who reviewed the paper, “To my knowledge, this study is the first to measure land subsidence across many urban areas using radar (雷达) data from satellites. I believe the majority of the adaptation strategies that we have, and the plans to fight climate change, are inaccurate, just because they did not include land subsidence. Land subsidence is an unheeded problem. It hasn’t been studied the way, for example, sea level rise has been studied.”
The new study was based on satellite radar measurements of how much the ground surface in 82 major cities, accounting for three-quarters of the urban population, moved up or down between 2015 and 2022. The researchers compared these measurements to data on potential contributing factors. Subsidence in these cities is caused in part by the pure weight of buildings, the study found. Groundwater extraction (开采) underneath the cities also plays a role, as do oil drilling and coal mining. These activities leave empty space underground where soil and rocks can press together or collapse (倒塌).
Being below sea level doesn’t mean a city is automatically destroyed. Much of the Netherlands is below sea level and sinking, but the country has been extensively engineered to prevent flooding in places and to accommodate it in others. Shanghai is already limiting groundwater extraction and is sinking more slowly than other cities. In Japan, groundwater management over the years has proved successful. “It’s difficult to stop subsidence entirely,” Dr. Nicholls said, “You’ve got to live with what’s left.”
28. What do the figures in paragraph 1 imply
A. Land subsidence is an urgent issue. B. Cities face fierce climate change.
C. Land subsidence is under control. D. Cities grow at an alarming speed.
29. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “unheeded” in paragraph 2
A. Overestimated. B. Identified. C. Unchanged. D. Ignored.
30. What may contribute to land subsidence in cities according to the passage
A. Population expansion. B. Overuse of farmland.
C. Energy extraction. D. Unequal distribution (分配) of water.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Measures can be taken to ease subsidence.
B. Groundwater is to blame for land sinking.
C. City planning calls for joint efforts.
D. Flooding prevention deserves further research.
D
Ponds (池塘) are a rich source of biodiversity, providing natural environments for many rare and endangered species, including plants, insects, birds and bats. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams. Yet, for a century or so, ponds have been unnoticed by scientists.
Why have we overlooked such a significant part of the natural world A key reason appears to be the cognitive bias (认知偏见) where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important. Rather than study ponds, biologists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find. Most of us also undervalue ponds because we assume they are human-made habitats and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin. Ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a long-lasting presence.
Overlooking ponds within science has had a big effect on our ability to protect their wildlife. It has created a world view in which policy-makers can simply ignore the big networks of ponds that make up so much of the global water environment. In Europe, for example, the Water Framework Directive mostly excludes any bodies of water smaller than 50 hectares.
Fortunately, views are changing. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, introduced a resolution (决议) on small wetlands, including ponds, giving more recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDERFUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds.
However, if we want to make use of the biodiversity power that ponds offer, there remains much to do. In a world where fresh water faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological engineering we can achieve to help support biodiversity.
32. What can be learned about ponds from paragraph 1
A. They are difficult to research. B. They are too small to support wildlife.
C. They fail to get appropriate attention. D. They have greater importance than rivers.
33. What does the cognitive bias assume
A. Small things are unimportant. B. Rivers are fully-developed.
C. Ponds are short-lived. D. Natural habitats are unnoticed.
34. Why is the Water Framework Directive mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To solve a problem. B. To present a fact.
C. To make a comparison. D. To prove a point.
35. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. Ecological diversity is easy to realize. B. Exploring ponds has a long way to go.
C. Fresh water supply can meet our needs. D. Building ponds can promote economy.

In the heart of the busy city of Avonlea, where the sounds of rushing cars never stopped, lived sixteen-year-old Emma. Unlike her classmates, who were often keen on the latest technology, Emma had a preference for knitting (编织).
Emma’s love for knitting was deeply influenced by her mother, who possessed a skilled and creative touch with needles. Her mother’s passion for knitting and generous spirit of helping others always inspired Emma to follow in her footsteps and take up knitting as a meaningful hobby.
Emma was really good at knitting. She liked to make scarves, gloves, hats and mini bags for her friends as well as her relatives. Her hats were created in a variety of styles and colors, each one unique and full of personality. Whether it was a mini bag or a classic scarf, each knitting work was a carefully crafted masterpiece and a unique gift full of love and warmth. With beauty and practicality, Emma’s creations never failed to impress.
One freezing morning in the peak of winter, the city had just been blanketed by a snowstorm that had left many, particularly the homeless, in desperate situation. As Emma made her way to school, she noticed a shaking figure under the bridge near her school. It was a homeless man she often saw on her route, but today he looked particularly miserable (可怜的). His face was half-hidden under a piece of worn cloth that hardly served as protection against the cold. Touched by the sight, Emma decided to present her scarf to the homeless man. She approached, handing the scarf to him.
“For me ” the man asked, his eyes widened with surprise.
“Yes! I thought it might help with the cold,” Emma said, her breath visible in the cold air.

续写文:
The man wrapped the scarf around his neck, instantly feeling a bit warmer. “Thank you. You are an angel,” he murmured, a glimmer of smile coming to his dry lips. He grabbed the scarf tightly, his eyes shining with happy tears. At that moment, Emma realized what she presented was not just a scarf but also a sign of hope. Inspired, she determined to bring that spark of hope to more people. An idea suddenly popped into her head that she could set up a knitting club to bring more warmth to those in need. Then Emma waved him goodbye and hurried to school, her heart light and warm.
Led by Emma, Knits for Hope Club was started in her school. Her classmates expressed their willingness to do their part. As time passed, the club grew in numbers and enthusiasm. By the end of winter, Knits for Hope had distributed more than two hundred hand-knitted items, warming numerous bodies and hearts. Through their needles, they had knitted a blanket of community, compassion, and warmth that enveloped everyone. Never did Emma realize the impact of her small gesture. It wasn’t about the scarves or hats; it was about weaving kindness into the fabric of society, showing that even the smallest acts can create the warmest changes.

Text 10
W: Winter was approaching. Jason was excited about the coming season. It was his favorite time of the year. He loved cold weather and snow. During winter he always played with snow, even as an adult. Jason would gather his family and friends at the park, where they had snowball fights. It was a lot of fun. His favorite holiday Christmas came in winter. This was another reason why Jason loved winter. Every year, he bought presents for his friends and family. Jason loved seeing the look on their faces when they unwrapped their Christmas presents. It was better to give than to receive, Jason thought. Jason loved everything about Christmas. He loved Christmas music. He loved playing with his children under the Christmas tree. Jason sometimes even dressed up as Santa Claus for fun and entertained his children. Jason could not stop thinking about winter. He could not wait any longer. However, it was barely in the middle of July. . . it was summer.
