Do you know what June fifth is
World Environment Day
World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June and is the United Nations' principal vehicle
(主要策略) for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. First held in 1973, it has been a platform for raising awareness on environmental problems.
Now let’s watch a video to find the answer.
What are the problems the earth is facing
Activity 1 Watch the video and answer the questions.
Which of the facts in the video do you find most alarming
What does the video want to tell us
What are the problems the earth is facing
Forest disappearing
Species extinction
Ocean pollution
Lack of clean drinking water
Plastic pollution
Thinner ice caps
2. Severe environmental problems we are facing nowadays make our future uncertain. It's time for everyone to take action now and make our planet a greener and safer place for our future generations.
Which of the facts in the video do you find most alarming
deforestation

Save Life on Earth
Earth, home to countless plants and animals for millions of years, has an uncertain future.
How many of us are aware that...
130,000 square kilometres of forest disappear every year
around 25,000 trees are cut down each day just to make toilet paper
each day, around 150 to 200 species of plants and animals become extinct-nearly 1,000times the natural rate of extinction
over 1 million animals are killed by ocean pollution each year
1 billion people don't have clean drinking water
a plastic bottle can take 450 years to break down
the ice caps are more than 50% thinner than they were 40 years ago
If we do not change our ways, we are at risk of ruining our planet and destroying manymore plants and animals. Some day in the future, there may be no tigers, no horses, nobutterflies, no dolphins and no whales nor will there be any trees or flowers. All of these things will be gone. And we will be gone, too.
Time is running out. Our planet needs our help.
It's up to us to decide together what happens next.
Watch the video again and check your answers!
Brainstorm: think of words and phrases related to the environmental problems.
Pollution:
water pollution,
air pollution,
soil pollution, etc
Deforestation采伐森林
Global warming
Overpopulation
Loss of biodiversity
Climate change
Waste disposal废物处理
Chemicals, Toxics and Heavy Metals
化学特制、有毒物质及重金属
Activity 2 Look at the cartoons and answer the questions.
1. What environmental problem
does each cartoon refer to
2. What are the causes of these
problems
3. What do you think is the most
serious environmental problem
we face today What should
be done to help solve it
1. What environmental problem does each cartoon refer to
Water pollution; deforestation; air pollution; global warming.
*What do you think is the most serious environmental problem we face today
*What should be done to help solve it
Useful expressions:
replace, invest, recycle, carpooling(拼车), classification of waste, green/clean energy, environmentally friendly lifestyles …
water pollution
air pollution
soil pollution
plastic pollution
overpopulation
waste disposal
deforestation
The environment has paid a high price for every country’s high economic growth. There are two aspects to the environmental damage. The first is the increase in air and water pollution. The second is the increase in carbon emissions (排放).
Explore the topic further
environmental damage
For a large and developing country like China, adopting policies for protecting the environment has effects on economic growth. For consumers and households, protecting the environment means adopting less-polluting lifestyles through conscious(有意识的) efforts for not polluting surroundings and using less carbon and energy-consuming appliances (器具).
How to protect
In recent years, a large part of China, especially Northern China has frequently been struck by smog. How does it come about The word “smog” is the combination of words “smoke” and “fog” to refer to smoky fog. It is a type of air pollution and usually forms in industrial areas or areas of high population. It releases large amounts of smoke or gases. And it will lead to respiratory diseases (呼吸道疾病) if people are exposed to smog for long. It’s time for us to take action to fight against smog!
Use following expressions to help you:
ignore, cause/lead to/result in, people's awareness of environmental protection, fossil fuel(化石燃料) burning...
2. What are the causes
3. What do you think is the most serious environmental
problem we face today What should be done to help solve it
Use following expressions to help you:
invest, recycle(v.回收利用), carpooling(v.拼车), classification of waste, green/clean energy...
If we do not change our ways, we are at risk of ruining our planet and destroying many more plants and animals. All of these things will be gone. And we will be gone, too.
Time is running out. Our planet needs our help.
It's up to us to decide together what happens next.
environmentally friendly lifestyles
Walk or ride a bike whenever possible
Choose organically grown fruits and vegetables
Plant more trees
Use as less disposable cutlery as possible
Bring your own reusable bags
Cut down your
energy use
environmentally friendly lifestyles
You can reduce the amount of waste you produce.
You can reuse the plastic bags rather than just
throwing them away.
Many items that you use can be recycled.
Repeat these three words daily:
reduce, reuse and recycle.
Let's enjoy a video
Do you know the three Rs of the environment
1. Can you describe what problems the earth is facing and what the causes are
2. Can you describe the most serious environmental problem we face today What should be done to solve it
3. What can we do for the environment
Self-evaluation
Choose one of the most serious environmental problems and discuss in groups to analyze the causes and think about possible solutions.
air pollution
Cause:
the burning of fossil fuels, agricultural activities, exhaust from factories and industries, mining operations, indoor air pollution
Possible solutions:
taking public transportation;
conserving energy;
understanding the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle;
emphasis on clean energy resources;
using energy efficient devices;
...
How about plastic pollution
Packaging waste
Plastic has revolutionized the way we package goods and safely consume food. But packaging accounts for more than 35% of plastic worldwide.
Southeast Asia has seen an explosion of plastic packaging waste, which increasing the risk of polluting rivers and seas.
Most plastic packaging is single use. Recycling rates are extremely low - less than 9% globally. If nothing changes, 26 billion tons of plastics will be produced over the next 30 years.
Solutions:
Controls on industry for
plastic packaging production.
Inventions and investment in
biodegradable (生物可降解的) or
reusable packaging.
Government targets to restrict plastic packaging and promote recycling.
What’s your solution
Surf the Internet about wild animals, then write a short report in 70 words, including existing problems, causes, damage, possible solutions.
