My Nana, since I was a kid, brought me up in the most unforgettable way possible, babying me by buying toys and presenting me with sweets and candies constantly and spending time with me, which created an everlasting bond between us.
Fast-forward a couple of years, when I began to outgrow these toys or candies, Nana didn’t just stop there. He began taking me almost every weekend to the local club where he had a membership. It meant the world to me as I could do absolutely whatever I pleased there. Other than that, Nana would take me to many parks, especially when there was a flower show on or something of that sort. He was very enthusiastic about nature and spent hours around it, enjoying what it had to offer.
Anyhow, his immense love didn’there...there...
My Nana had grown older. Now he finds it hard to drive and walk too much, so he prefers to stay at home. What I do now is to try to give him company and talk to him mainly about his travels at sea, as he was a sailor, and the various countries he visited and how he spent his early years and about my school, etc.
I’ll never be able to repay my Nana for all the kindness and comfort he gave to me. Thank you, Nana, from the bottom of my heart for all you’ve done for me.

Many English expressions and idioms use parts of the body to describe things unrelated to the body. For example, a green thumb means to be good at growing vegetables, flowers and other plants. And if something costs an arm and a leg, it is very expensive.
Well, today, we talk about your shoulder. This part connects your arm to your body. And the shoulder finds its way into many expressions.
For starters, let’s talk about “shoulder” as a verb. If you shoulder something, you accept it as your responsibility; you give support, or you take the blame.
And this is a great place to start. This idea of taking responsibility and giving support leads us to some other “shoulder” expressions. For example, during difficult times in our lives, it is often necessary to have a shoulder to lean(倚靠) on or a shoulder to cry on. When we lean on someone’s shoulder, we ask for their help. When we cry on someone’s shoulder, they are there for support. We call people who give us a shoulder to lean on or cry on our “support system”.
There is another way our shoulders give us support. If you are successful in your career but others have come before you, you can say you are standing on the shoulders of giants. This means you have not succeeded on your own. You have learned from others in the same field who had earlier successes.
Now, from our shoulders, let’s move up to our heads. Our heads are centered between our shoulders. So, it should not be surprising that we have a couple of expressions that use both.
If you have a good head on your shoulders, you are thoughtful and smart and you often achieve success in life. This means you are much better than those in a similar field or competition.
28. Which expression shows that someone pays too much money
A. You cry on a shoulder. B. You spend an arm and a leg.
C. You need a green thumb. D. You shoulder the responsibility.
29. Who can be called your “support system” when you are in trouble
A. The person succeeding in life on his own.
B. The person lending you a shoulder to cry on.
C. The person standing on the shoulders of giants.
D. The person helping you succeed in the special field.
30. What is a man having a good head on his shoulders like
A. He looks very handsome. B. He is healthy and positive.
C. He is wise and thoughtful. D. He can overcome all the difficulties.
31. What’s the purpose of this text
A. To show how to learn some English expressions.
B. To encourage people to study English expressions.
C. To tell us the kinds of English expressions and idioms.
D. To share some expressions about our head and shoulders.

Spanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria(细菌) to repair 18th-century paintings.
Bosch, a microbiologist, tells Reuters she got the idea for the method while considering possibilities for a paper toward her doctoral degree. During this process, she discovered someone else’ s paper that suggested bacteria can be used to repair artworks.
At around the same time, Bosch learned that her mother was struggling to find a good method for repairing 18th-century paintings. The paintings sat in Santos Juanes— one of the oldest churches in the city of Valencia.
Bosch said her mother, Pilar Roig, mentioned how difficult the repairing process at the church was. One reason was the glue(胶) used to remove the paintings from the walls in the 1960s. It was nearly impossible to remove it completely.
“My mother had a very difficult problem to solve and I found a paper about bacteria used to clean frescoes in Italy,” Bosch said. A fresco is a kind of painting that often appears across a large wall.
Bosch added she decided to write her doctoral paper on the same subject. That was more than ten years ago. Today, she gets to work with her mother on the church repair. They are using the bacteria method to remove glue from artworks. The $4.46 million project is being provided by local organizations.
The process involves feeding small amounts of the glue to the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begins to break down the glue. The mother-daughter team then mixes the bacteria with a natural substance, called a gel, and places it onto the paintings. They say that after about three hours, the gel mixture is removed, leaving the paintings glue-free.
Bosch has also used her bacteria removal process in other repairing projects in Italy and Spain. And she is now training other scientists to use a different kind of bacteria to clear walls of painted graffiti.
32. According to Pilar Roig, why was it difficult to restore the paintings at the church
A. It was impossible to use the glue. B. The paintings were too old to restore.
C. It was unlikely to fully remove the glue. D. The paintings sat at the oldest church.
33. What can we learn about Bosch’s doctoral paper
A. It was written over ten years ago. B. It was published by local organizations.
C. It was one and only rewarding paper. D. It was about using bacteria to protect glue.
34. What does Bosch’s mother probably work on
A. Researching bacteria and medicine. B. Teaching biology in a key university.
C. Studying different kinds of artworks. D. Repairing old churches and works of art.
35. What’s the best title of the text
A. Repairing 18th-century Paintings Is Very Difficult
B. Different Kinds of Bacteria Have Different Functions
C. A Spanish Scientist Writes the Doctoral Paper on Bacteria
D. A Spanish Scientist Uses Bacteria to Repair Old Artworks

Text 10
W: I have studied languages from a young age. I began learning Greek at age 10, when my family and I had moved there for 2 years. Eight years later I started university back in England, where I met one of my best friends. Guess how we became best friends She spoke Greek as a second language, too. I was encouraged by families to continue on the language path since I started learning when I was 10 years old, so I took up German and it was really challenging. There were a lot of times I thought I was going to give up, but I am so glad that I didn’t. When I was 18, I didn’t get into the university I wanted. I changed my plan and applied to go to the University of Manchester instead, to study Spanish. I had never studied Spanish before. But they saw that I had studied Greek and German and thus offered me a place! Now I am in Spain for a year having an amazing time and enjoying the sunshine, working as an English language assistant in a lovely little primary school.
It was a wonderful chain of events. If I had ignored everybody who encouraged me to study languages, my life would be totally different. I’m glad that I listened.

One possible version:
Dear Miss Green,
I’m Li Hua, a student in Grade 1. Knowing new members are wanted in English Club, I’m writing to apply to join it.
I have been interested in English since I began to study it. Just as the saying goes, “Interest is the best teacher.” I have a good understanding of English as a result of my interest in it. What’s more, I even won the first prize in the English speech competition held in my junior high school. I’m confident that English Club can bring me a lot of fun and also improve my language skills and creativity, which in turn will help me study better.
I hope you can take my application into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
