On February 13, 2023, Wu Yibing made history, beating John Isner in an exciting three-set final at the Dallas Open to become the first man from China to win an ATP title.
Brought to a tennis court for the first time at just five, initially (最初) encouraged by his parents as an exercise to lose weight, Wu soon had his talent discovered by his provincial junior team, beginning a journey that would change the face of men’s tennis in China. In 2017, Wu Yibing became famous after winning the US Open boys’ tournament at 18 to become the first Chinese to win a major junior title, raising high hopes for the “Wonder Boy” to change the fortune of Chinese men in a sport long dominated (主导) by women’s success on the pro stage.
In 2018, Wu won his first ATP Challenger title in Shanghai. However, the brutally (残酷地) competitive nature of men’s pro tennis hit the rising Wu with a tough reminder after multiple (多处) injuries — to his elbow, lower back, shoulder and wrist — forced him to be away from the ATP Tour for close to three years.
He made his return last year and won three ATP Challenger titles before qualifying (取得资格) for the US Open. “Looking back, I feel like I wouldn’t have been here if not for the ups and downs over the past few years. I take all the difficulties and struggles as an asset (资产) that helps me become better now,” said Wu. “Of course there were a lot of doubts because I had surgery and the rehab (康复) wasn’t going well. The championship today was a payoff for all the hard work and everyone who’s supported me along the way.”
4. What did Wu first start playing tennis for
A. Winning awards. B. Developing an interest.
C. Killing time. D. Becoming thinner.
5. Why was Wu absent from the ATP Tour for nearly three years
A. He wanted to change his major.
B. He suffered from serious physical injuries.
C. He didn’t stand out in training for the match.
D. He can’t deal with the pressure of the ATP Tour.
6. What can we learn from Wu’s statement
A. No cross, no crown.
B. Well begun is half done.
C. More haste less speed.
D. Time waits for no man.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Development of Chinese Tennis
B. The Power of Difficulties for Athletes
C. The Pioneer of Chinese Tennis Sport
D. The First Chinese Male Winner of ATP
C
When people think about improving their physical fitness they often neglect (忽视) balance. Good balance is a necessary part of being physically fit and key to living a long life, according to research. It’s important for everyone, no matter your age.
Older adults are most affected by poor balance. Falls are the leading cause of injury and death for those 65 and older, with nearly 30% in this age group reporting at least one fall in 2018, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But younger adults frequently fall down, too.
Forty-eight percent of young adults reported falling at least once during one 16-week study. The falls most commonly happened during sports activities, with women in the study reporting more falls and fall-related injuries than men.
Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages 20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health. That figure (数据) compared with 21% of middle-aged adults (46 to 65) reporting falls and 35% of those over 65. While falls among young adults were often connected with sports, falls by the middle-aged group were typically related to health problems and physical changes.
Many factors (因素) can affect your balance outside of age, such as vision changes, brain injuries, overweight and a general lack of physical fitness. Even if you have no risk factors, simply neglecting to work regularly on your balance will result in increased instability (不稳定性).
“Our body is conditioned to lose what we don’t regularly use and practice, and balance is no different,” said Susan Baxter.
8. What role does a good balance play in our lives
A. It helps us live a healthy and long life.
B. It enables us to build a perfect shape.
C. It protects us from getting seriously sick.
D. It has the power to make us look young.
9. How does the author show the research results
A. By having a discussion. B. By following the time order.
C. By raising questions. D. By giving a list of figures.
10. In which situation are young adults likely to fall down
A. When a health problem comes up. B. When working regularly.
C. When a physical change appears. D. When joining in a sport.
11. What can we learn from what Susan Baxter said
A. We’ll lose our balance if we don’t practise it often.
B. Our body is used to working in its own way.
C. We should manage our body properly.
D. We are naturally born with balance.

A new report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) shows that global animal populations have dropped greatly since 1970. The report is based on information about 5,495 different species of animals around the world. The information was collected by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), which used it to create what it calls the “Living Planet Index” (LPI). The LPI focuses on vertebrates — animals with backbones, such as birds, fish, and mammals. The LPI report shows that between 1970 and 2020, the average size of these populations dropped by 73%.
The LPI can be a little perplexing. It doesn’t show the change in the total number of animals on the planet. Instead, it shows the average change in the size of animal populations since 1970. For example, if one species dropped from 1,000 animals to 500, that’s a 50% drop. If another species dropped from 100,000 to 50,000, that’s also a 50% drop. The number of animals lost in the second population is much higher, but they would both count as a 50% drop for the LPI. But even if the numbers aren’t perfect, scientists agree that animal populations are dropping. And that’s a serious problem.
The report shows that populations have dropped in all kinds of habitats (栖息地). Freshwater habitats, such as rivers and lakes, saw the biggest drop, averaging 85%, followed by land animals at 69%. In the oceans, the drop was56%. Geographically, Latin America experienced the greatest loss at 95%, while Africa’s animal populations fell by 76%, and Asia and the Pacific by 60%. Europe and North America had smaller drops, but they still saw a 33% drop since then.
Human activities, including habitat destruction, farming, climate change, pollution, and over- hunting, are the primary cause. The WWF calls for urgent action to protect Earth’s wildlife, recommending that 30% of the world’s land, oceans, and freshwater be protected by 2030 and that humans change how they eat, farm, and produce energy.
12. What does the LPI report show
A. The total number of animals on Earth.
B. The habitats of different endangered animals.
C. The average change in animal population sizes.
D. The number of species that have already died out.
13. What does the underlined word “perplexing” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Simple. B. Confusing.
C. Exciting. D. Important.
14. Based on the report, which region saw the largest average drop in animal populations
A. Europe. B. Latin America.
C. North America. D. Asia and the Pacific.
15. What recommendation does the WWF make to protect wildlife
A. Developing new farming technologies.
B. Increasing the number of zoos worldwide.
C. Introducing new animal species to endangered areas.
D. Caring for the world’s land, oceans, and freshwater.

If you live in a place that gets a good deal of snow and ice each winter, you already know what the next few months may hold: snowball fights, hot chocolate, and so on! ____16____ At the first sign of snow or ice in the forecast, drivers will be out spreading salt on the roadways. You may also see people spreading salt on their sidewalks and driveways.
____17____ It helps prevent ice from forming on the pavement, making it much safer to drive during winter weather. Are you wondering how exactly salt makes the roads safer You may have heard people say salt melts ice. However, the process is a bit more complicated than that. It has to do with a concept called freezing point depression (冰点降低).
Liquid water (液态水) becomes frozen ice at 0℃. ____18____ When salt is added to water, it makes it harder for water molecules to freeze. In effect, this lowers the freezing point of water to about -9.4℃. Below that temperature, even roads that have been salted may be covered in ice.
Salt offers a cheap and effective way of making roads safer during winter months. ____19____ Rock salt used to treat roads ends up in local bodies of water and even in ground water. In large quantities, this can reduce the amount of freshwater in an area and negatively impact plants and animals that rely on it.
Salted roads may also be the cause of increased chloride (氯化物) levels in nearby lakes and rivers. ____20____ In addition, the salt is corrosive and can damage roads, bridges, and vehicles. These impacts have led some groups to advocate other solutions for icy roads, like sand. Some even suggest using sugar or juice in place of salt.
A. This is its freezing point.
B. Why do people put salt on roads in winter
C. Are you looking forward to winter weather
D. This chemical can do harm to plants and animals.
E. However, it also has a negative effect on the environment.
F. Of course, along with the snow, salt trucks become a common sight.
G. The salt spread on roads and sidewalks often appears gray or brown.

One year ago, I joined a club. Every morning, there was a personal trainer who worked out. He did his routine with such a quiet determination that he made it all look very easy When I wanted to quit, I watched him push himself to his own limits, and I found myself motivated to work hard.
Several weeks ago, I was watching him do chin-ups (引体向上) easily. I asked him if I could try it. I had never tried before. He eagerly stepped aside and encouraged me to step up to the bar. I pulled myself up without thinking... Once... then twice. I had no strength left. I told him that was all I had, so he stepped up behind me and pushed me up for a third and a fourth pull. It felt so good and I smiled from ear to ear.
The next day when I was done with my workout, I asked him to spot me again. Again, I did two. Again, on Day three and so on. I thought it was pitiful that I could only do two, but he said he was impressed with my chin-ups, explaining that most people couldn’t do them at all. Then he told me that if I practised every day, I would be doing five or six in no time.
I just jumped in and gave it a try. A few months had passed since that memorable day in the club. I continued to work on my chin-ups, slowly but steadily. With each passing week, I could feel my strength increasing and my determination growing.
One day, as I approached the chin-up bar, my trainer noticed the determination in my eyes. He smiled and said, “You know, you made a big progress in a such short time. I think it’s time to set a new goal for yourself.” I asked, “What do you have in mind ” He replied, “How about aiming for ten consecutive chin-ups I believe that you can achieve it with your insistence.

【答案】One possible version:
Be a good tourist
An increasing number of people are interested in traveling, which brings in money for local economy as well as makes their mind and body relaxed.
However, there’re a few problems remaining to be settled. One growing problem is that tourists have written or carved on the famous attractions, causing damage to them. Another big concern is the disturbance to the local people and life. It also annoys us that the rubbish is thrown away anywhere instead of being put into rubbish cans.
So immediate action ought to be taken to be a good tourist. Following basic rules is a must, such as not littering or smoking in public. Be considerate to others and keep it in mind that whenever we travel at home or abroad, we are representing our country to the rest of the world.

【答案】I was both excited and nervous about this new challenge. Ten chin-ups seemed like a significant leap from where I had started, but the belief my trainer had in me fueled my determination, I accepted the challenge and got to work. Every morning, I pushed myself harder than before. The numbers slowly climbed: three, four, five and then seven chin-ups. It was challenging, but I remembered the lesson that I had learned. The most difficult tasks can be achieved through consistent effort and belief in oneself.
Finally, one morning, it happened. I pulled myself up to the bar and completed ten consecutive chin-ups. I couldn’t contain my excitement and joy. I felt a profound sense of accomplishment. I achieved my goal through persistence. I had made it a reality. As I continue my fitness journey, I carry this lesson with me: No matter how daunting the obstacle may seem, the belief and persistence can help me overcome it. It’s not just about physical strength but also about mental fortitude and the power of setting and achieving goals.
