Godfrey Hounsfield's early life did not suggest that he would accomplish much at all. He was not a particularly good student in the teachers’ eyes— he neither observed the school disciplines nor worked hard enough at school lessons. His teachers described him as“thick”.
He joined the army during the Second World War, but he wasn't much of a soldier. However, he was a wizard with electrical machinery— he would use the newly invented radar to help pilots better find their way home on dark, cloudy nights.
After the war, Hounsfield followed his commander's advice and got a degree in engineering He practiced his trade at EMI,a company with a focus on electronics and electrical engineering.
Hounsfield's natural talent for engineering made him lead the team building the most advanced mainframe computer available in Britain. But by the 1960’ s, EMI wanted out of the competitive computer market and the brilliant engineer wasn't sure what to do in the future in the company. Therefore, the company gave Hounsfield a long holiday.
During the holiday, Hounsfield met a physician who complained about the poor quality of X-ray of the

brain, which looked like fog. This got Hounsfield to make a move into the new field.
Hounsfield returned to EMI and talked about the idea with his boss. Then he used a new way to appoach the problem of imaging what was inside the skull. By working backward and using the fastest computers, he could work on the mystery of each brain layer. But there was a problem: EMI wasn't involved in the medical market then. The company allowed Hounsfield to work on his product, but provided no funding.
Luckily his boss, Bill Ingham, saw the value of Hounsfield's proposal and struggled to ask EMI to keep the project run. Finally, Hounsfield built a safe and effictive human scanner.
Hounsfield's innovation transformed medicine. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in1979 and was knighted by the queen in 1981. He continued his invention career until his final days in 2004,

Time to load up some popular games: new research indicates pigs have the mental capability to play video games. The study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, tested the ability of four pigs ( Hamlet, Omelette, Ebony and Ivory) to play a simple joystick(操纵杆) game with their noses, moving a cursor(光标) to four targets on the screen. Although the animals didn't show the skills to win a round any time, they did show an understanding of some simple games. Performing well not by chance, the pigs appeared to recognize that the movement of the cursor was controlled by the joystick. The fact that they did so well although they didn't have flexible fingers is“extraordinary”, according to the researchers.
That pigs can do this should give us pause about what else they are capable of learning and how such

learning may influence them,” said Purdue University’ s Dr Candace Croney, the study’ s lead author.
Researchers also noted that while the pigs could be taught to play the game using food as positive motivation, they also responded well to social interaction. In fact, when the game was made more challenging and the pigs became unwilling to participate in it, “only encouraging words from the experimenter” would make the pigs continue their training.
These findings are the latest to highlight the intelligence and learning abilities of pigs. Not only have they been shown to use mirrors to find hidden food, but studies have also shown how pigs can be taught to“come” and“sit” after oral commands( 口头命令).
As with any sentient(有感觉力的) beings, how we interact with pigs and what we do to them influences and matters to them. We therefore have a duty to further understand how pigs get information and what they are capable of learning and remembering, because this may help them understand their interactions with us and their environments.
66. What can be learned from Paragraph 1
A. The pigs knew a lot about the video games.
B. The pigs operated joysticks with their noses.
C. The pigs competed with each other in the games.
D. The pigs sometimes performed well by chance.
67. What made researchers believe pigs socially interacted well
A. Their being inspired by human words.
B. Their being driven by food.
C. Their being willing to keep trying.
D. Their being stopped by challenges.
68. Which of the following statement is true according to the passage
A. Pigs can't play video games for lack of flexible fingers.
B. When playing games, pigs can win a round at any time.
C. The research suggests that pigs are very friendly animals.
D. When games are difficult, pigs are unwilling to play them.
69. What's the main idea of the passage
A. Pigs are the best animal games.
B. Pigs play games with flexible noses.
C. Pigs can be encouraged by food.
D. Pigs have great learning capability.
70. What will researchers probably focus on in the next stage of their experiment
A. How pigs learn to play challenging games.
B. How pigs improve their learning ability.

第Ⅲ卷 非选择题 (满分30分)
第四部分:写作
第一节 阅读表达(共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
So Therapy dogs are dogs that are trained to give comfort and love to people in unfortunate situations. They are often used to help people in hospitals, retirement homes, schools and disaster areas. Whether or not a dog is suitable for this line of work is based on its personality. Because therapy dogs must work with many kinds of people, such as young children or the elderly, they must have patience.
During World War II, a soldier named William Wynne found a dog abandoned(遗弃) on the battlefield. He became friends with the dog and named it Smoky. When Wynne became ill and entered a hospital, his friends brought Smoky for a visit. Smoky became so popular with the other sick soldiers in the hospital that he was allowed to stay. The doctors in the hospital used Smoky to help cheer up the patients. After the war ended, he continued to work as a therapy dog in the United States.
In the 1970s, an American nurse named Elaine Smith started a program to train therapy dogs. Smith noticed that patients in hospitals seemed to get better faster when they were around dogs. Many other doctors and nurses noticed that having animals regularly visit hospitals helped lower stress and blood pressure among patients. In the 1980s and 1990s, other animals also started to help the sick. Cats, birds and rabbits have become“therapy pets” and they are now used in many hospitals around the world.
Today, therapy pets not only help injured soldiers, but also help children with reading disabilities by providing an audience that won't look down upon them. Some therapy pets are used to work along with the doctor to help the patient learn to walk again after a serious injury.
