A
It was an afternoon in August. I was just about to turn 18. I stood in front of a six-story, red brick building. It was to be my new home for the next several years. It was my first day of college, and I was very overjoyed. I had two suitcases and a bag with me. Everything I thought I would need was packed in them. I carried them up the five flights of stairs to my dorm and wondered what life had in store for me.
It was another afternoon in August. I was just about to turn 42. My daughter was 18, and we were standing in front of the same building at the same college that I had been to years before. I smiled as I helped her carry her things up to her room, but I also noticed that we were making more than one trip. All the students seemed to have much more stuff than I did all those years ago. Yet, it didn’t seem to make things any better for them. In fact, they looked more stressed. As I threw down another box of my daughter’s things, I wondered what life had in store for her.
Last night I had a dream that I’d had many times before. I was back in that same dorm with my belongings piled on my bed, searching for my course book and wondering what classes I would take. I often wondered what this dream meant, but when I woke up this morning, it became obviously clear to me. We are sometimes teachers in this life, but we are always students in it. We are here to learn to love ourselves and everyone as ourselves. It takes a lifetime. The stuff we carry with us through this life doesn’t matter at all. It is the stuff we carry inside of us when we leave this life that counts.

All young people dream of traveling the world. They are excited and very eager to see new sights. However, they have little idea how they would really do it if given the chance. Due to their limited knowledge of geography, they often know little about the places they wish to visit or how to get there.
Already, hundreds of thousands of Chinese student tourists are visiting places like Wuyi, Lhasa, Lijiang, Dali, Vientiane (the capital city of Laos), and Phnom Penh (the capital city of Cambodia). Indeed, these students will soon be the most well-traveled generation in China’s history. The World Tourist Organization predicts that Chinese tourists abroad will increase twenty times in 25 years. The largest percentage of these tourists will visit Southeast Asia. Not all Chinese who travel abroad will be tourists, however. More and more youths are deciding to volunteer their skills in this region, much like their peers in the Peace Corps (an American volunteer organization for development) and VSO (an overseas volunteer organization).
Traveling requires important skills like planning a trip and solving problems that come up during the journey. The focus is on how to read an atlas (地图集) to make travel plans and find ways to travel. An atlas offers plenty of information about geography and helps increase students’awareness of their global environment. Using an atlas is especially helpful for students with different visual and spatial learning styles.
4. What trend (趋势) is expected among Chinese youths in the future
A. They will mainly travel as tourists.
B. They will increasingly volunteer abroad.
C. They will focus on traveling within China.
D. They will travel more in developed regions.
5. Why is using an atlas helpful for students when planning a trip
A. It helps them find the best travel ways.
B. It teaches them how to solve math problems.
C. It improves their reading speed.
D. It helps them remember country names.
6. What can we infer (推断)from the passage
A. Important skills can be improved through traveling.
B. Students are not interested in planning trips.
C. Southeast China will be a popular destination for tourists.
D. Using an atlas helps students learn different learning styles.
C
To know parents’ influence on students learning, researchers studied 438 kids and their parents. Before a school year started, the researchers asked parents to write down how anxious they would feel in different situations connected with math — like planning their money spending or checking their house size. They also checked their children’s math ability and math anxiety in a school year.
The study found kids whose parents were anxious about math learned less math over the school year. And these kids didn’t perform as well on the tests as those who didn’t have math anxiety. Besides, these kids also were more likely to become nervous about math themselves. But these kids only “caught” that anxiety if their parents had often tried to help with their homework. This is an example of good purposes having a bad result.
The study’s result appeared in Psychological Science. Erin Maloney led the study. As someone who has personally experienced math anxiety, she says, “I was always very nervous about math, not only taking tests but also learning the new concepts (概念). So I really tried to balk at math, including finding excuses to miss math tests and not wanting to do math homework.” It was only after she saw how math could be applied to her interest that she started to enjoy math.
Parents with math anxiety should still support their kids as the kids work on math homework, though. But they should know helping kids with schoolwork requires more than just going over facts and concepts. Parents should help kids look for ways to have fun with math, like playing math-based games. When kids have difficulty in learning, encourage them to bravely face it—but don’t make them nervous.
What can students do if they’re already nervous about math Maloney says, “My earlier study showed that students who wrote about their fears of math for 7 to 10 minutes before taking a math test performed better on that test. After the writing process, many students said their fears weren’t such a big deal.”
7. The 438 kids’parents were asked to present ________.
A. their attitudes to school education
B. their opinions on kids’math ability
C. their ways to solve kids’math anxiety
D. their math anxiety levels in their daily life
8. What result did Maloney’s team report in Psychological Science
A. Kids are more likely to be afraid of math.
B. Some parents pay little attention to their kids’study.
C. Kids can pick up negative thoughts about math from their parents.
D. Parents should help with their kids’homework as little as possible.
9. What does the underlined phrase “balk at” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A Enjoy B. Avoid C. Teach D. Understand
10. What advice would Maloney probably give to students on their math anxiety
A. Working closely with their math teachers.
B. Seeking help during their learning process.
C. Sparing some time to go over their notes daily.
D. Removing math anxiety by recognizing it.
