Businesses are now in cost-cutting mode. Title inflation (头衔通胀) has crept into the workplace. Layoffs, hiring freezes and concerns about a recession (经济衰退) are plaguing employers.
To balance this unique economic environment, employers have figured out a way to comfort employees and job applicants without spending more money. They are offering impressive titles to soften the blow of not providing a raise to internal employees or big compensation to job candidates.
An employee’s title is their identity. It gives them credibility in the office and makes them feel more powerful. In this sense, the policy is a sensible way to help keep staff and attract top candidates.
But if you don’t really deserve the new title, it could come back and trouble you. Recruiters will be pleased to find a candidate who is a pe rfect fit for a significant, well-paying position in terms of skills, background, and previous experience. However, a stumbling block arises when they notice the candidate has a higher title than the client offers. Since a recruiter wants to make a placement and earn a fee, they won’t waste time and will seek out other candidates who are a better fit.
Even if the recruiters decide to contact the candidate, there’s a good chance the candidate won’t accept. Because most people aren’t aware that their title was inflated and believe it was a reward for their outstanding performance. Understandably, they would be offended if they received a lower-level post. Now that you are at a certain level, you don’t want to go backward.
What’s more, if your current title is too high, it raises red flags. For example, when searching for a new job, if your title is “director,” but the new role is under that level, the interviewer will curiously inquire, “why do you want to go down in title ” There will be an assumption from the hiring manager that something isn’t right. They may feel that the job seeker is leaving before being fired and willing to downgrade. Rather than trying to figure out the motivations of the candidate, they’ll move on to others who have a cleaner story without any baggage.
8. What does the underlined word “plaguing” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Shocking. B. Embarrassing. C. Troubling. D. Confusing.
9. What can we learn about employees with impressive titles
A. They tend to look down upon others.
B. Their salaries don’t match their titles.
C. Their fear of being fired will disappear.
D. They get a good platform for development.
10. What will a recruiter probably do if a candidate’s title is higher than the client offers
A. Have a discussion with the client.
B. Contact the job applicant immediately.
C. Exclude the candidate from consideration.
D. Gather more information about the candidate.
11. What is hiring managers’ attitude towards those who choose to downgrade
A. Enthusiastic. B. Dismissive. C. Appreciative. D. Doubtful.
D
Despite all the efforts students make to graduate with a science major, research has shown that most college science courses provide students with only a fragmented (碎片化的) understanding of fundamental scientific concepts. The teaching method improves memorization of separate facts, proceeding from one textbook chapter to the next without necessarily making connections between them, instead of learning how to use the information and connect those facts meaningfully.
With that in mind, we developed a series of cross-disciplinary (跨学科的) activities. In our most recent study, we investigated how well college students could use their chemistry knowledge to explain real-world biological phenomena. To begin with, we interviewed 28 first-year college students majoring in sciences or engineering. All had taken both introductory chemistry and biology courses. We asked them to identify the content of these courses and what they believed to be the take-home messages from each course. The students responded with extensive lists of topics, concepts, and skills that they’d learned in class.
Following that, a set of cross-disciplinary activities were designed to guide students in the use of core chemistry ideas and knowledge to help explain real-world biological phenomena. One activity explored the impacts of ocean acidification on seashells. Here, the students were asked to use basic chemistry ideas to explain how the increasing level of carbon dioxide in sea water is affecting shell-building marine animals such as corals, clams (蛤蜊) and oysters.
Overall, the students felt confident of their chemistry knowledge. However, they had a harder time applying the same chemistry knowledge to explaining the biological phenomena. These findings highlight that a big gap remains between what students learn in their science courses and how well prepared they are to apply that information.
The students in our study also reported that these activities helped them see links between the two disciplines that they wouldn’t have perceived otherwise. The ability to make these connections is important beyond the classroom as well, because it’s the basis of science literacy (科学素养). So we also came away with evidence that our chemistry students at least would like to have the ability to have a deeper understanding of science and how to apply it.
12. What does the existing science education fail to do according to the research
A. Promote memorization of separate facts.
B. Understand fragmented scientific concepts.
C. Encourage students to enjoy the learning process.
D. Teach students to integrate different subjects.
13. What can we learn about the student interviewees in the first step of study
A. They had rich academic knowledge.
B. They paid little attention to biology courses.
C. They managed to apply their chemistry knowledge.
D. They hardly identified the core ideas of the courses.
14. What does the activity about ocean acidification expect students to do
A. Study some unusual phenomena under the sea.
B. Interpret the effects of carbon dioxide on sea creatures.
C. Analyze the level of carbon dioxide in sea water.
D. Come up with practical methods to protect marine animals.
15. What does the author see from the result of the study according to the last paragraph
A. The need to study scientific knowledge in class.
B. The difficulties of developing cross-disciplinary abilities.
C. The potential to promote students’ science literacy.
D. The methods of enhancing students’ practical skills.

Once upon a time, sewing and mending (缝补) clothes was common. At some point in the last few decades, though, it became something of a lost art. ____16____ Schools stopped offering home economics classes, technology boomed and fast fashion became increasingly popular. All of a sudden, it’s more inconvenient to fix something than it is to buy something new.
But all hope is not lost. ____17____ On one of the most pleasant corners of the Internet, you’ll find lots of videos showcasing everything from visible mending to beginner sewing journeys.
____18____ Mending is a great way to reject consumerism. As any eco-expert will tell you, the best thing you can do is buy less to begin with. That means shopping for quality items that will stand the test of time, but also learning a few key skills so you can repair those items as needed rather than sentencing them to life in an already-overflowing landfill. It’s also helpful to customize (改制) secondhand items which might not be exactly the right size or a little out of date. ____19____
Beyond the functional benefits, mending is about using what you have, embracing imperfections, fixing what’s broken, and rejecting the idea that newer is better. The other aspect of mending is mindfulness. You focus on the task at hand and use your creativity to make your clothes unique. It’s meditative (冥想的), slow work. ____20____ And an added bonus: It’s sustainable.
If you are interested in sewing and mending, it is the perfect time to learn the new skill, which can especially have a positive impact on the world.
A. Why should you learn to mend
B. This is a means of making a living.
C. It’s productive, and deeply satisfying.
D. Purchasing secondhand clothes is a good choice.
E. Why have people stopped mending their clothing
F. This way, you may find yourself upcycling pieces into ones that suit you.
G. In the past few years, there’s been growing interest in slow fashion — sewing and mending.

One day in first grade, I was walking home when a black dog suddenly ran out from a yard near the corner of our street. I stopped and saw a side of dogs I’d never experienced. Staring at me, he began to circle me. Scared, I tried to walk away. The moment my back was turned, he seized my ankle. His teeth locked into my flesh. I screamed and kicked until he let go. I ran home, with the dog chasing me until he gave up near my house.
I ran into the house, crying so hard that my mother couldn’t understand what had happened. Once my wounds were cleaned and bandaged (包扎), I told her, “A dog bit me, Mommy. It hurt.” I felt more betrayed than scared—— one of the animals I loved had hurt me for no reason. “I’ll never trust another dog again,” I said.
That night, my nightmares grew worse. My fear of dogs grew so intense that I refused to visit my grandfather’s farm, where he had a dog I used to love. I became so terrified that my mom had to walk me past the house where the dog lived every day, and I struggled to focus at school. My teacher contacted my mother and my mom was determined to help me get over this fear.
“Gail, you need to overcome this fear,” my mom said as we walked home. “Remember my friend Emma She has a black Lab named Chips, and she’s invited us to meet him.”
Dread filled me. “No, Mommy, please! I hate dogs. They want to hurt me!”
“Not Chips,” she said, smiling. “I promise it won’t happen.”
Unwillingly, we went to Emma’s house. My heart raced as she opened the door, revealing Chips wagging his tail. “Hello, Chips,” my mom greeted him. As Chips wagged (摇) his tail, I couldn’t shake off the fear that still remained from the previous attack. I know I should greet him too but I was frozen by fear.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

D. Doubtful.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. C 11. D
D The methods of enhancing students’ practical skills.

I continued to pat him, feeling something had changed in my mind.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】With my mom’s gentle encouragement, I knew I had to try. I took a deep breath and slowly reached out my hand towards Chips. My fingers trembled as I extended them towards him and for a moment, I hesitated. Memories of past fear surged through my mind, but I pushed them aside. I closed my eyes briefly and forced myself to touch him. To my surprise, instead of barking or pulling away, Chips simply wagged his tail and leaned into my hand. The softness of his fur under my fingers was comforting, and a small smile crept onto my face.
I continued to pat him, feeling something had changed in my mind. Chips wagged his tail, his eyes filled with kindness, not aggression. I sat back, watching him settle at my feet, and the weight of the fear I had carried for so long began to lift. My mom smiled, clearly noticing the change in me, and I smile back. I had thought that all dogs wanted to hurt me, but Chips had proven me wrong. For the first time since the attack, I felt like I could let go of my fear and start to trust again. Only then did I realize that to conquer fear is the beginning of growth.
