When I suggested my 13-year-old try tennis, she quickly refused me. “I’m not sporty; stop trying to get me to do sports,” Julianna said. I had suggested it because some of my happiest recent memories were of playing ping-pong with her. Tennis seemed like a natural progression from ping-pong and a great way to work out some of her growing pains on a larger playing field. But my suggestion was always refused by her.
Still I was undeterred. I believed that doing some sports would help Julianna manage her emotions. I’ve seen how sports help with stress. It worked for me when I was a teenage girl.
Midway into summer, we stayed at home, and Julianna and I felt really bored. “Do you want to play tennis ” I asked her at lunch one afternoon. Sure, she said. At that time, we were both eager to spend as much time as possible out of the house.
Arriving at the court, we set down our bags, picked up our rackets (球拍), and headed to our sides of the court. The net was like the growing divide between us — I desiring connection and my teenage daughter longing for independence.
I started by hitting a ball over the net, and Julianna took a big swing and missed. We repeated this several more times. I didn’t tell her she was holding the racket too close to the neck or she should step more into her forehand. My daughter wanted the chance to figure these things out for herself. We repeated the pattern of me hitting the ball and her missing it a few times before she finally got it back over the net. “This is fun,” she said with a mixture of surprise and delight and then she smiled widely.
Now we always find time to play tennis. We’re both eager for an activity that can ease tensions between us in daily life. It’s nice to have a place where both of us can release our negative moods and let them go.
14. Why did the author persuade her daughter to play tennis
A. Tennis was as popular as ping-pong.
B. They had a good time playing tennis together.
C. It would help her daughter make more like- minded friends.
D. It would be good for her daughter’s emotional management.
15. What does the underlined word “underred” mean in paragraph 2
A. Not accepted. B. Not sure.
C. Not discouraged. D. Not satisfied.
16. What did the author do when her daughter missed the ball
A. She started to encourage her daughter to keep trying.
B. She continued hitting the ball instead of giving instructions.
C. She got frustrated and started hitting the ball harder herself.
D. She stopped the game to correct her daughter’s technique.
17. What is the author’s probable purpose of writing the passage
A. To prove that playing tennis has positive impact on emotions.
B. To recommend that parents should introduce tennis to their children.
C. To encourage teenagers to release their negative mood by doing sport.
D. To share the experience of finding peace with her daughter on the Tennis Court
C
The sun is setting brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.
Taking too many pictures could actually harm the brain’s ability to keep memories, says Elizabeth Loftus, a psychology professor at the University of California, Irvine. Therefore, we get the photo but kind of lose the memory.
Photography “outsources” memories. It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’ re so distracted by the process that we miss the moment altogether.
The first explanation is the loss of memory. People know that their camera is recording that moment, so they don’t try to remember. Similarly, if you write down someone’s phone number, you’re less likely to remember it offhand because your brain tells you there’s just no need. That’s all well and good — until that piece of paper goes missing.
The other is distraction. We’re distracted by the process of taking a photo — how we hold our phone, composing the photo, such as smiling faces, the background to our liking and clear image, all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize.
However, taking photos can benefit memory — when done mindfully. While taking a photo may be distracting, the act of preparation by focusing on visual details around has some upsides. When people take the time to zoom in on specific things, memories become strengthened.
Another benefit is that we recall moments more accurately with the photos. Memory has been reshaped with the help of new information and new experiences. Thus, photos or videos help us recall moments as if they really happened.
Memories die away without a visual record backing them up. Therefore, a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.
18. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To introduce the topic of the text.
B. To remind us of similar experience.
C. To call on readers not to take photos.
D. To describe a familiar scene at the beach.
19. Why does photography “outsource” memories
A. Photos are more detailed than memories.
B. Taking photos is helpful for us to memorize.
C. People are allowed to rely on technology to remember.
D. Too many sources take up people’s time for other activities.
20. What may likely be discussed next
A. Situations when taking photos is better.
B. When distraction is most likely to happen.
C. How to stay focused while taking photos.
D. How to use photo-taking to memorize better.
21. What is the author’s attitude towards taking photos
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.
C. Unclear. D. Objective.
D
The conversational tone (语气) of an AI chatbot or voice-based helper seems like a good way to learn new ideas. However, they may actually make us more willing to believe incorrect information compared with the content presented in an Wikipedia (维基百科) article.
To investigate this issue, Sonja Utz at the University of Tübingen, Germany, and her colleagues asked about 1,200 participants to search to search for information using one of the three tools. The first included text appearing letter by letter in the style of a large language model, similar to ChatGPT; the second provided information through a voice-based device like Siri; and the third was a text-based copy of Wikipedia. In some cases, participants were given accurate (准确的) information, while others saw factual errors, such as naming Sofia as the capital of Slovenia.
Participants were asked to rate the accuracy, trustworthiness, and believability of the information on a seven-point scale, where 7 is entirely accurate. In the answers where errors were introduced, information presented in a text- based form was rated as 4.24. The ChatGPT-like setup managed 4.76, while the voice assistant scored 5.29.
“It’s long been understood that people easily believe that objects that show or copy lifelike qualities are in fact alive,” says Mike Katell at the Alan Túring Institute, UK. “It’s not surprising that people find conversational chat assistants more reliable than text because humans seem to be used to set life where it doesn’t exist and to give trust to things that seem lifelike.”
The way the chatbots and voice agents are programmed to use a friendly and helpful conversational tone also confuses people, says Katell. “The makers of chatbots aren’t necessarily trying to fool us, but they are trying to put users at ease.”
Utz says it is important to recognize that the presentation of information can affect how much we believe it. “People now have learned that these models hallucinate (产生幻觉) sometimes,” she says. “But what people do not know yet is that just this interaction mode makes us more likely to believe whatever is written there.”
22. What was the main purpose of Sonja Utz’s study
A. To examine the accuracy of different Al types.
B. To compare different types of information sources.
C. To explore how presentation affects belief in information.
D. To analyse why chatbots are more accurate than Wikipedia.
23. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The process of the study.
B. The purpose of the researchers.
C. The reaction of the participants.
D. The type of information presented.
24. Which of the following ideas might Utz agree with
A. Chatbots makers cheat users into believing in them.
B. It’s impossible for people to doubt interaction mode.
C. It’s normal that people prefer lifelike chat assistants.
D. People are unaware that they may get false information.
25. What can be a suitable title for this passage
A. Downside of Chatbots B. Power of AI Voice Helpers
C. Dependence on AI Technology D. Preference in Conversational Mode

Still, I was undeterred.

The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves.
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.
C. Unclear. D. Objective.
【答案】18. A 19. C 20. D 21.

【答案】One possible version:
Ladies and gentlemen,
I’m Li Hua from senior one. Today, I’d like to talk about my favorite sport, basketball, and how it has influenced my life.
My interest in basketball began when I watched the NBA with my father, fascinated by the skill and teamwork displayed on the court. Soon after, I joined the school team, which improves my physical fitness and teaches me the value of hard work and devotion. Moreover, playing basketball helps me relieve stress and stay positive, even when facing challenges in other areas of life.
In conclusion, being active through sports like basketball not only promotes a healthy body but also contributes to a balanced and happy life. I encourage everyone to find a sport they enjoy and make it a regular part of their routine.
That’s all. Thank you!
