Jack threw the papers on my desk. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” he said loudly. I had changed a long sentence and corrected its grammar—something I thought I was paid to do.
Several days later he made me angry again. I went to his office, prepared to lose my job if need be, but not before I let the man know how I felt. “What ” he said nervously.
Suddenly I knew what I had to do. “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. And it’s wrong for me to allow it to continue,” I said. “I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend.” The next day I brought some cakes to Jack’s office. Every time I saw Jack in the hall, I smiled at him. After all, that’s what friends do.
One year after our talk, I was told that I had breast cancer. When I was in hospital, my friends tried to find the right words to say, but no one could. The last day of my hospital stay, the door opened and Jack walked over to my bed. “Tulips (郁金香),” he placed some bulbs (球茎) beside me and said, “If you plant them when you get home, you’ll be there to see them when they come up.” Tears filled my eyes.
In a moment when I prayed for just the right words, a man with few words said the right thing. After all, that’s what friends do. Now, I have seen those tulips push through the soil every spring for over ten years.

Where in the classroom do you prefer to sit, and why Scientists have discovered that seating preference not only shows students’ personalities, but has a great influence on their school performance. Generally speaking, students show different attitudes depending on where they sit. Based on the research, scientists have developed a funnel-like (像漏斗的) model of “learning zones (区域)” to see the relationship between seating and active learning.
In this model the mouth of the funnel (A) is the best position for learning. Students in this front area prove to be the most active learners. They show a greater desire (渴求) for learning, which leads them to focus better and take a more active part than the rest of the class. Those in the neck of the funnel (B) don’t pay the same close attention, but they ask a lot of questions, partly because of the added confidence they feel from being in a safe zone, with others around them. Less desirable is the area “outside the funnel (C, D)”, which refers to the side and the back rows, where students take a less active part in classroom activities-and find it hard to focus their attention, falling asleep at times.
Studies about learning zones suggest that a change in traditional seating plans can benefit students. In fact, a growing number of teachers have begun less traditional seating plans, such as “U-Type”. There are no side and back areas, so teachers can expect their students to take part in activities more actively and increase student-teacher interaction (互动).
8. According to scientists, what influences students’ learning greatly
A. The time of class. B. Seating positions.
C. The number of students. D. The size of the classroom.
9. Which is the most proper area for learning
A. Area A. B. Area B. C. Area C. D. Area D.
10. What advantage do the students sitting in Area B over those in Area C&D
A. Sometimes fall asleep. B. Feel safe and confident.
C. Seldom ask their teachers questions. D. Try to avoid looking directly at the teacher.
11. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A life newspaper. B. An advertisement.
C. An education magazine. D. A science textbook.
D
Technology is widely available to students in classrooms across the United States, a new study shows. Nearly nine in ten U. S. public school students say they use digital learning (数字化学习) tools at least a few days a week. And more than half of those who were questioned said they used digital technology to learn.
In the new survey, digital learning tools means technology. It includes websites, application software programs, and online classes, games, videos and programs. The survey found that classroom technology gets high marks from educators. At least eight in ten teachers and school leaders say they see great value in using classroom technology tools now and in the future.
When it comes to preparing students for future careers (职业), the study found that educators are likely to say technology is more effective than non-digital tools for connecting learning to students’ careers.
Derek Kelley of Virginia agrees. He manages technology for Fairfax County Public Schools which serves nearly 200,000 students. He said, “The important thing is to help prepare the students for real world experience and knowledge about technology is something students need.”
In the report, more than half of the special education teachers questioned said technology could help their students. Tony Daniel, a special education teacher, agrees with that. He teaches children with learning difficulties at the Springfield Estates Elementary School in Springfield, Virginia.
Nearly all pupils say digital learning tools are fun. Most say the technology helps them learn things on their own and at their own speed.
Almost three-fourths of secondary students say the technology tools help them learn things on their own. Over 50% said they make school more interesting. 42% would like to use it more often at school, and only 8% said they would like to use them less. One thing everyone agrees on is that technology is here to stay in American classrooms.
12. What do educators think of technology according to paragraph 3
A. It saves a lot of learning time for students.
B. It mixes education with career more effectively.
C. It offers much fun to students in learning process.
D. It makes teachers and students communicate more easily.
13. What can digital learning tools do for pupils
A. Offer them high marks. B. Force them to learn at home.
C. Speed up their physical growth. D. Help them learn with their own steps.
14. What are the figures (数字) in the last paragraph about
A. Students of different grades. B. The advantages of technology.
C. Students’ views on technology. D. The development of technology.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Technology Will Replace Traditional Teaching
B. Technology Completely Changed Our Society

A pleasant surprise
For a long time, I had been looking for a piano of my own to practise on. There was a piano shop on the street along which I walked every day to school. Whenever I passed the shop, I would stop, looking at the beautiful piano standing in the comer of the shop window. How I had been dreaming, day and night to possess a piano like that!
Unfortunately, my father was just a clerk. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. In order to save money, even on cold winter days, my father would walk the seven miles every day to get to work. No he could never afford to buy me an expensive piano. Though he knew I wanted to play that piano so much buying it was an extravagance (奢侈品) well beyond our family’s income.
One day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, to my surprise and disappointment, the piano had gone. I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. Tears filled my eyes when I thought of not being able to sec that piano any more.
Disappointed, helpless and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. After about an hour. I returned home. I had just entered into our house, when I heard my mother calling me. I brushed away my tears and followed the sound of her voice into the dining-room.

He manages technology for Fairfax County Public Schools, which serves nearly 200,000 students.
Paragraph 1:
I could not believe my eyes.

Paragraph 2:
As soon as my father appeared, I hugged him tightly.

【答案】I could not believe my eyes . The beautiful piano I had been longing for was standing there in front of me. Excitement and happiness filled my heart. I couldn’t help crying and tears streamed down my face. My mother approached me, saying they knew the piano was the very thing I had dreamed about and my father had tried everything possible to realize my dream. I was on the point of saying something when the door opened.
As soon as my father appeared, I hugged him tightly. “Thank you, Dad!” I said. I could see a big smile on his wrinkled face. Regardless of the bad weather, my father had gone to work every day to make money. I cold not imagine how much effort he had made! My father kissed me on the forehead, whispering that he had at last earned enough to buy the piano. Only then did I realize that no gift could measure up to a father’s love.
