After putting in long hours for 12 years, Mike Goldberg decided it was time to leave his job. Just earning money wasn’t true to his core and he realized that was not his true desire.
In 1996, Goldberg left his job and his home in Los Angeles to follow his love for underwater diving in Hawaii. When getting out of the water after his very first dive, he decided that this was what he really wanted to do — to enjoy his life by combining diving and making a living. In 2004, Goldberg and his family settled in Islamorada, and opened a dive shop, Key Dives.
As an enthusiastic diver, Goldberg developed a strong appreciation of coral reefs (珊瑚礁), which not only support all kinds of species, but also protect coastal areas. “Over the last two decades, coral reefs have gone from colorful and full of life to functionally extinct today. Now, many of the reefs in the area cannot recover naturally on their own and require humans’ assistance to survive,” Goldberg said seriously.
Although he was not a scientist, knowing more about the history of the reefs and what’s happening now to them than most people put him in a unique position to communicate in plain words about what was going on. Around the same time, he met Dr. Kylie Smith, who was completing her PhD to become a coral reef ecologist. In 2019, they teamed up to co-found Islamorada Conservation and Restoration Education (I. CARE), with the goal of seeking as many divers as possible and having them help restore the area’s reefs, ensuring their survival for future generations.
So far, I. CARE has organized thousands of special coral restoration dives for local and out-of-town participants. It has replanted more than 10,000 corals and educated more than 2,000 people. More local people are learning about the importance of coral reefs and how to help rebuild them during I. CARE’s diving trips. “There’s so much work to do. We’re just getting started,” Goldberg said.
4. What was Goldberg’s decision after going diving for the first time
A. Looking for more coral reefs. B. Earning a living through diving.
C. Supporting sea life protection. D. Diving with his family regularly.
5. What did Goldberg most probably think of the current condition of coral reefs in Islamorada
A It’s interesting. B. It’s understandable. C. It’s promising. D. It’s concerning.
6. What’s the purpose of Goldberg and Smith’s establishing I. CARE
A. To provide free training for divers. B. To raise money for coral reef protection.
C. To call on divers to help recover coral reefs. D. To exchange stories about diving experiences.
7. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Tips on going on diving trips. B. Achievements made by I. CARE.
C. Suggestions on replanting corals. D. Activities organized by I. CARE.

Have you ever stepped into a restaurant or shop and been greeted by a seated cat figure with its paw(爪子) up in the air These cats, known as maneki-neko, are found all around the world, but are native to Japan.
In Japanese, maneki means “beckoning”(招手示意) and neko means “cat”. Business owners place the cats in their shop entrances in the hope that the cats will bring in good luck, as well as paying customers. For this reason, English speakers often refer to them as “Lucky Cats” or “Welcoming Cats”.
To people from Western countries, the waving gesture looks like a “hello”, but in Japan and other Asian countries, an upright arm with fingers moving is a way to say, “Come here”. While the name maneki-neko implies this gesture, some historians believe the upright pa w shows that the cat is washing its face. This idea might have some truth in its gesture as an old Japanese belief says that a cat washing its face means a visitor is sure to arrive. An ancient Chinese tale supports this idea: “If a cat raises its pa w over the ears and washes its face, then clients will come.”
Whether a maneki-neko is washing its face or calling someone to approach, its paws indicate further clues to the fortune it might bring. When the right paw is raised, money is said to come, while the left pa w is believed to attract customers. The higher a cat’s paw is, the more fortune a cat is thought to bring.
Like Japan’s beloved Hello Kitty character, maneki-neko figures are modeled after a native cat called Japanese bobcats, known for their short tails. Because of an old tale, these cats have long been relevant to luck. According to the story, a monk(和尚) was sitting under a tree when his cat beckoned with his paw for the monk to come to him. Puzzled, the monk walked over to the cat. A large branch fell where the monk had just been seated.
8. Why do businessmen prefer placing a cat figure near the gate of shop
A. Because the cat means good fortune. B. Because the cat will pay customers’ bill.
C. Because the cat is more lovely than the dog. D. Because the cat is praised by English speakers.
9. What is the meaning of a cat putting the right pa w up
A. It implies washing its face. B. It waves goodbye to you.
C. It makes the client puzzled. D. It shows the road to wealth.
10. What can we learn about the maneki-neko figures
A. It has a long tail with luck. B. It is often seated under a tree.
C. It is based on native bobcats. D. It is more popular than Hello Kitty.
11. Which of the following is the best title of the text
A. A Cat and a Monk. B. A Cat with its Lucky Paws.
C. A Cat and its Friends Hello Kitty. D. A Cat with its Japanese Name.
D
Driving through tunnels is a risky task as drivers need to lower their speed control car distance and adapt to poor light, and the limited space may make them anxious, all making preventing accidents a public health challenge. Here, in a study, scientists show that well-chosen background music can help improve road safety.
“By comparing the effects of different types of sound— slow VS. fast music, warning sounds such as alarms, and a voice reminding them to drive safely— on brain activity and physical behavior, we find the best solution to keep drivers focused,” said professor Yanqun Yang, from Fuzhou University, China.
The scientists studied background sounds and music, but focused on the length of a long tunnel. With immersive (沉浸式的) VR, they reproduced a 5,100-meter-long tunnel with traffic in both directions and employed 40 young people to act as experimental drivers. When the experimenters wore the VR headset in an imitation (模拟的) car, the researchers closely monitored and recorded the pressure on the pedals, the steering wheel’s angle, and driving speed.
Brain activity and heart rate variability(心率变异性) to show changes in emotional state, like stress and nervousness, were measured as well. Drivers drove fastest in response to fast music, and slowest to slow music. Comparisons of heart rate variability— typically low in people who are stressed— indicated that the drivers felt most relaxed, with very little mental stress, and could best concentrate on driving when listening to slow music, which was similar to feedback from drivers, of whom 63% chose slow music as their preferred parisons of the drivers’ brain waves indicated that slow music reduced nervousness in the drivers, while voice reminders, fast music, and alarms increased it.
“We find that slow music played as background throughout the tunnels, replaced by alarms only at spots and times when the risk of accidents is the highest, is best to keep drivers attentive, at ease, and not tired, while pushing them to be extra vigilant and focused when they’re driving through tunnels,” said researcher Dr Wei Lin. “But there’s still a long way to go before more specific design and management recommendations can be proposed.”
12. What makes the prevention of accidents challenging according to Paragraph 1
A Drivers need to deal with various tasks in the tunnels.
B. Drivers are absent-minded while driving in the tunnels.
C. Drivers have limited knowledge of car distance in the tunnels.
D. Drivers can’t adjust themselves to the poor light in the tunnels.
13. What’s the role of VR technology in this experiment
A. Testing drivers’ immediate response. B. Allowing drivers to choose proper music.
C. Reproducing real-world driving conditions. D. Training drivers on tunnel driving techniques.
14. What can be inferred about drivers listening to slow music in this experiment
A. Drivers might show high heart rate variability.
B. Drivers find it hard to control their emotional state.
C. Listening to slow music can increase their brain activity.
D. Listening to slow music can reduce their positive emotions.
15. What does the underlined word “vigilant” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Stressful. B. Creative. C. Confused. D. Watchful.

“Go back, Mom! Go back!” shouted my six-year-old daughter, June. I quickly turned around to cast my doubtful eyes on the back seat, worried I had forgotten her younger sister. I was relieved to see the girls safe and sit in their car seats, but June’s expression was one of pure anxiety. “Mom, we have to go back,” she insisted. “Someone needs our help!”
As I looked back from the driver’s seat, I spotted a young man in rags playing his guitar. His skinny, poor-looking dog rested next to his feet near an old, worn cardboard sign that read, “Homeless, please help.”
We’d come across homeless people before and had talked about their needs and struggles. I should seize the chance to set a good example for my daughters to give a helping hand. So I searched for some cash, only to find I had nothing but credit cards. “I’m sorry, sweetheart, but I don’t have any cash,” I said. “I have some, Mom!” June replied. She opened her little pink purse and pulled out a five-dollar bill. “Oh, good. I’ll pay you back when we get home,” I responded with a sigh of relief. “No. Mom.” she insisted, “I want to help him. I don’t want you to pay me back. I want to give him my money.”
As we drove down the crowded rows of the parking lot, I reassured her that we would get to him.
When we got there. I called out, “Excuse me, sir!” He cautiously walked toward our car and answered, “Yes, ma’am ” “Here you go, sir.” June stretched out her entire body to hand him her five-dollar bill through the window and explained, “I want you to have this.” He smiled and hesitatingly asked, “This was your money ” “Yes! I want you to have it,” she proudly answered. “Thank you,” he said, touched by her thoughtfulness.
We exchanged a smile, and as we drove away, my younger daughter Scarlett began to cry. I hadn’t noticed that she had emptied her purse and was holding two quarters in her tiny hands.

A. It’s interesting.

【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B

Driving through tunnels is a risky task as drivers need to lower their speed, control car distance and adapt to poor light, and the limited space may make them anxious, all making preventing accidents a public health challenge.
A. Drivers need to deal with various tasks in the tunnels.
A. Stressful. B. Creative. C. Confused. D. Watchful.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】 “Mom, I wanted to help, too,” she sobbed. I sighed and drove back to where we saw the man. But what could be found was only the guitar leaning against the wall. After 20 minutes’ search, outside a KFC, we spotted the man talking to an old granny with a walking stick. We were so happy that we ran towards him, “ So you are here. I’m looking for you.” said Scarlett.
Now with tears in his eyes, he said in disbelief, “You want to help me ” She said, “Yes, I want to help you as my elder sister did, but I couldn’t find you.” “The old granny wanted to buy food in the KFC, but she had difficulty in walking. So I helped her.” he said. Scarlett said , “You’re so kind. Here is the money that I want to give you.” The man accepted it and said with appreciation, “Thank you. Hope you have a good day.” Then we waved him goodbye and left for home.
