The famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said, “I always do what I can’t do so that I can learn how to do it.” It strikes a chord with me because that’s exactly what I’ve done these years.
One of my earliest memories of doing before learning is of baking scones (烤饼) when I was about 10 years old. I wanted to bake them to surprise my mother when she returned home.
Before that I’d observed how my mother baked them many times. As I started to try, I didn’t know I shouldn’t handle the dough with my hands too much once I’d added the baking powder. However, I knew exactly how to roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter to cut the scones, because my mom had already taught me.
By the time my mom arrived home, the smell of freshly baked scones welcomed her into the kitchen. They were baked to golden brown perfection-flat, as a result of over handling the dough, but they tasted OK. My mom sweetly praised me for my attempt, rather than scolding me for the state of the kitchen, which was like a tornado had just blown!
Have my attempts always been successful I wish! Some of my kitchen disasters were of such proportions that even the dogs wanted nothing to do with them. My gardening failures didn’t live to see another season.
But my habit of doing before learning is still helpful. Whatever computer program or application I have to learn, I do so by simply starting to use it. I do, learn, and improve. So if you ask me whether I regret that I tend to do first and learn later, I’d say I don’t, because what I have discovered from those is the wisdom to know when it’s OK to do and then learn, and when it’s probably better to learn and then do!
4. What can we learn about the author’s first experience of baking scones
A She practiced hard before actually trying.
B. She turned to her mom when necessary.
C. She wanted to perform better than her mom.
D. She managed to do it despite a little imperfection.
5. How did Mom respond to the author’s attempt
A. She made improvements to the scones.
B. She expressed her appreciation for the job.
C. She shared her first experience of baking.
D. She was surprised by the mess in the kitchen.
6. What does the author think of her practices of “doing before learning”
A. Most of them have ended up in failure.
B. They are just a barely usable method.
C. They contribute a lot to her self-improvement.
D. They only apply to the learning of specific skills.
7 What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To stress the importance of keeping learning.
B. To show the benefits of doing before learning.
C. To encourage people to do something they can’t do.
D. To call on readers to change their way of learning.
C
Rare is the CEO who praises the virtues of a lie- in. According to one survey, two- thirds of the CEOs of large American companies are up by 6 o’ clock; for average Americans the share is less than one in three. For future corporate leaders, the message seems clear: you snooze (打盹), you lose.
Bartleby has no such ambitions. But he’s experimented with early starts, and found they not only bring the sense of satisfaction that comes from arriving before your editor. Inboxes can be cleared and tricky problems solved before the flood of emails and meetings, leaving you feeling well prepared for the day ahead.
Early birds are certainly held in higher regard. Rolling into the office late is unacceptable in most workplaces. A study published in 2022 found night owls (猫头鹰) were perceived by respondents as being “lazy”, “undisciplined” and “immature”.
Rising early is not, though, all upside. Those ready to receive work when the boss arrives may be given more of it. If the early bird gets the worm, the clever worm stays in bed. Urgent tasks often come up during the day, meaning early arrivals may end up working just as late as other colleagues.
Waking before sun rise also risks turning you into a bore. Some early risers cannot resist describing how much they get done while night owls hit the snooze button. Others go home early rather than socialize. Night owls, by contrast, let loose. In the eyes of many, late nights are the preserve of youth, while early mornings are seen as for the elderly.
Efforts to change your circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythm are likely to end in disappointment, as it is largely a product of genes. Perhaps the best advice is to stop worrying about your body clock. Most people are neither early birds nor night owls, but in between, struggling both in the morning and late evening. That is why most offices operate between 9 and 5— and why they ought to have break rooms.
8. Why does the writer mention the survey in paragraph 1
A. To illustrate the harmful effects of snoozing.
B. To praise the healthy sleeping habit of the CEOs.
C. To tell the difference between CEOs and average workers.
D. To show the possible link between early rising and success.
9. What does paragraph 2 focus on
A. The feelings of early risers. B. The challenges on a workday.
C. The benefits of getting up early. D. The preparations before work.
10. What can be a downside of being an early bird
A. Poor public image. B. Increased workload.
C. Hug e social pressure. D. Decreased productivity.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Why Do CEOs Prefer Early Mornings
B. How Can We Change Our Body Clock
C. What Is the Science Behind Early Rising
D. Is It Better to Be an Early Bird or a Night Owl
D
Ecologist Carl Safina’s latest book focuses on the chimpanzees, the sperm whale and the scarlet macaw. In Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace, he writes about culture, the structures of societies, and what makes us who and what we are.
Safina’s three animals are selected for their variety. Safina warns against thinking about chimpanzees in purely human terms. “We see in them partially formed premiumans caught between being and becoming, a forerunner of humankind,” Safina writes, noting, “Chimpanzees are not our ancestors. Chimps are our contemporaries. They are complete chimpanzees, not half-baked humans.”
The main reason for this warning is also one of the central attempts of Becoming Wild: criticize the idea of human exceptionalism. For centuries, scientists and philosophers have fixed that exceptionalism on one thing after another: Humans are the only animals that have language, humans are the only animals that make tools, etc. These have all boiled down to the same idea that only humans have culture.
Safina’s book shows that nothing could be further from the truth. Human beings have only recently begun to recognize the animal cultures around them. “Humans use language so much that it has swamped our own ability to recognize nonverbal signals that we ourselves continually display and respond to,” Safina writes. “The world is full of layers and waves of communication.”
Becoming Wild describes communication of all kinds. Sperm whales include each other in sonic webs full of vocabulary and even regional dialects. They find meaning in family and group identity by living in stable groups where individuals stay together for decades. Only in sperm whales and humans do group identities extend so far beyond relatives. Like whales, young scarlet macaws closely follow cultural practices. They spend years learning tool-fashioning and developing unique calls learned from their parents. They also learn dialects to enhance group identity. Chimpanzees mirror all the interpersonal complexity of humans. A huge part of chimpanzee life is learning how to make peace through forgiveness.
12. What does Safina think about chimpanzees
A. They are human beings’ ancestors.
B. They are randomly chosen for study.
C. They are species independent of humans.
D. They are the symbol of being and becoming.
13. What is an attempt of Becoming Wild
A. To prove an assumption. B. To challenge a belief.
C. To present a fact. D. To evaluate a statement.
14. What does the underlined word “swamped” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Indicated. B. Measured. C. Tested. D. Weakened.
15. What is mainly presented in Becoming Wild
A. The existence of animal culture. B. The uniqueness of human beings.
C. The complexity of human society. D. The importance of animal communication.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
While most of us work hard to shine at the presentations and speeches we can prepare for, we may find impromptu (即兴的) communication scary. Actually, you just need to learn specific skills to communicate effectively when put on the spot. Here are a few pointers.
____16____What do you want your audience to know How do you want them to feel, and what do you want them to do Having a clear objective paired with an awareness of your audience will narrow your focus. Then you can prioritize what to say and choose your exact words more wisely.
Organize Your Thoughts. When making formal presentations, most people give a logical structure that audiences can easily follow. But few of us adequately organize thoughts in impromptu situations. ____17____ In fact, the best speakers maintain audience interest by demonstrating connections among specific points, ideas, for example.
Listen as well as you talk. ____18____ You should do the opposite: focus on listening so that you can better understand the in-the-moment needs and interests of your conversation partners and respond more effectively. Paraphrasing or asking open-ended follow-up questions can help confirm your understanding and provide extra time to think about your response.
Dare to be dull. Don’t feel you need to give a standout performance. One popular saying applies here, “____19____” Listeners are more likely to trust and approve of you when you speak like a human being rather than an actor or a robot. Research shows that the most effective speech includes moderate use of fillers such as “um” and “uh”.
The real problem in impromptu communication isn’t an inability to communicate.____20____Fortunately, a measure of experimentation thought, and practice of the skills can make impromptu speaking opportunities your time to shine.
A. Identify a communication goal.
B. He knows most who speaks least.
C. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
D. It’s being so nervous that we struggle with the talks.
E. We may assume that it’s impossible to do so on the fly.
F. A clear structure enhances comprehension and engagement.
G. Most people obsess over what to say during impromptu encounters.

One day two years ago, my mother came home from work and announced that she had found a pet for the family. My father, little sister, and I eyed her in doubt.
My sister asked what kind of dog it was. My mother said it was a poodle (贵宾犬) named Pepe. I couldn’t believe she wanted a poodle — especially one with such an ordinary name. But she had made up her mind. “Actually, I’m doing a co-worker a favor,” she said. “The woman who owns Pepe says he hates to be alone and needs children to play with him.”
Pepe arrived the next night. His short tail shook happily. I didn’t get very close to him, thinking he should have stayed with his previous owner. My little sister played with him until bedtime, and he would come to me and begged for more attention. I always ignored him. But no matter how I treated him, he’d always like to be with me. He has always been waiting for me at the front door at the end of the day, smiling happily. He seems to know that I will be coming home from school at that time. Every day, he asks me with his eyes to play with him or take him somewhere. At night, he will wait until I fall asleep, leave his bed by the wall heater, walk down the hall and jump onto the end of my bed.
One night while everyone was sleeping, I was in a half dream state. My throat hurt, my eyes pained, and some animal was crying in my ear. I opened my eyes and saw fog in my room. I wondered who left the window open. Pepe cried and bit my pajama sleeve (睡衣袖). Then I woke up and realized that it wasn’t fog in my room — it was smoke.
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】Standing up, I couldn’t breathe. I got down on the floor and moved beneath the smoke. Pepe followed every move of mine, his curly-haired belly dragging on the ground. If I hadn’t been so scared, I would have laughed. We finally arrived in the kitchen, where the smoke was very thick. I coughed heavily, but went forward. Pepe went with me. I covered my face with my pajama top and stood up, only to find that my mother had left a pot, with some oil still in it, on a burner that was still on.
I turned off the burner with Pepe around me. I moved on the floor to open the back door. Smoke went into the backyard quickly. Pepe ran out, but returned to follow me as I moved back to wake my family. They had their doors shut, and hadn’t smelled the smoke. My parents and sister woke up finally and we aired out the house, and then gathered in the kitchen to thank Pepe. He saved our lives and earned my respect forever. To this day, I’ve never seen a finer example of unconditional love than a poodle named Pepe.
