I wanted to buy something today—until I figured out the cost versus the benefit. At that point I knew it was a completely stupid idea.
What I wanted to buy was an older car to have in addition to my four-year-old Smart Car that I absolutely like. So you wonder, why would I want to have another car as well The reason is---grandkids. I have several and in the Smart Car I can only have one passenger (It’s a two-seater) .Besides, one of my daughters-in-law does not trust the Smart Car as a vehicle for her daughter Lily to ride in, so that’s one little girl I can’t take anywhere at all. My husband also has a car—and a truck.
So that’s why I had the stupid idea to buy an old Toyota I found on the lot of an honest used car salesman. Thank heavens I came to my senses before I spent $8000 to buy it, $80 or so to license it and probably $500 to insure it for a year. It would be senseless to buy that car. My grandkids just have to continue to come with me one by one. I can’t take two girls out to lunch or two girls shopping or pick up the brother and sister that live in the same house. As for the little one that’s not allowed to ride with me. . . well, Grandpa will have to pick her up. As for me, I didn’t get money in my savings account by being totally stupid. Sure, doing things with the kids is fun, but spending that kind of money to put two or more of them in a group---which would probably drive me crazy anyway---is really dumb. Sometimes temptation can prove that you still have a little sense.
24. What can we know about the author’s grandkid Lily
A. She refused to stay with her grandma
B. She thought it was dangerous to sit in a Smart Car.
C. She was always picked up by her mom.
D. She was not allowed to take her grandma’s car.
25. Why did the author give up the idea of buying the Toyota
A. It was a used car. B. She couldn’t afford it.
C. The salesman was unreliable. D. There was no need for it.
26. What does the underlined word “dumb” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Difficult. B. reasonable. C. stupid. D. amazing.
27. What can be the best title of the text
A. Look before you leap. B. Better late than never.
C. Don’t judge a book by its cover. D. Every advantage has its disadvantage.
C
It’s Paris Fashion Week and the streets of the city are filled with designers, models and journalists. Among the crowds, eagle-eyed experts are taking careful notes. Their job is to detect emerging trends. Their notes will instantly be added to selected “trend forecasts”, which will be sold to designers, who will use them to inspire new pieces. Traditionally, these fashion forecasters have relied only on such methods to make predictions.
But as artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have become increasingly powerful in the last decade, forecasting agencies are now turning to machine learning for help.
This is all welcome news for an industry worth about $2 trillion globally. Forecasts can have a big influence on the fashion industry’s carbon footprint, which is responsible for at least 4% of all worldwide emissions. Designers will produce more of what will actually sell at the moment, 25% of fashion products are unsalable, or not sold. Besides, using Al tools that can analyze millions of posts from around the world allows designers to look at fashion trends more globally.
But designers often feel insecure about relying just on the data provided by AI. “A few years ago, there were big indicators on social media of yellow being a trend,” says Francesca Muston, vice president of a trend forecasting company. “And if you had followed completely the social media data gathered by AI models, yellow pieces would seem to be a good investment. But how many people are really going to wear a bright yellow coat That’s a brave fashion choice. “ AI tools don’t have their own aesthetic (审美的) viewpoint so they may not be able to satisfy people’s desire for newness. “That’s why we maintain a very strong creative viewpoint in our forecasting with a team of industry experts,” says Muston.
Dr Michal Koren, a researcher, says, “The role of human experts in identifying trends will continue to be crucial even as AI and data-driven models become more accurate. “
28. What is the purpose of the notes taken by the experts
A. To report the news about Paris Fashion Week. B. To compare different design methods.
C. To help them make fashion predictions. D. To collect information about designers.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly discuss
A. The various benefits of using Al tools to predict trends.
B. The high environmental costs of the fashion industry.
C. The importance of looking at fashion more globally.
D. The serious problem of unsalable fashion products.
30. Why does Muston mention the trend of yellow predicted a few years ago
A. To show AI fashion predictions are not always reliable.
B. To explain why people dislike some new trends.
C. To describe the recent changes in people’s fashion choices.
D. To prove the key role of social media in fashion forecasting.
31. Which statement might both Muston and Koren agree with
A. Machine learning is more creative than human experts.
B. AI tools will not replace human trend forecasters.
C. It is possible for Al to have its own fashion sense.
D. Many human trend forecasters will be unemployed.
D
The sharp fin (鳍). The rows upon rows of sharp teeth. The large black eyes. The sharks you see on television in Jaws or Discovery’s “Shark Week” are not the friendliest looking creatures. They aren’t exactly an animal you want to find near you while swimming in the ocean. Despite their portrayals (刻画) in movies and popular culture, sharks are complicated, misunderstood creatures that are weaker than they appear.
One very common misunderstanding about sharks is their desire to hunt humans. Actually when sharks attack humans, it is because they mistake a human for their normal prey (猎物), seals or dolphins. They don’t seek out humans on purpose. Statistically, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than be bitten by a shark.
Sharks are very important to the ocean as they are at the top of the food chain. Some sharks even control the balance of an ecosystem through fear alone. Tiger sharks in Australia help protect seagrass meadows from turtles. Turtles eat the seagrass and without the sharks, will destroy these meadows. When tiger sharks are present though, the turtles are scared away, holding back their appetite for seagrass and protecting its growth.
Though sharks have a reputation for being very scary to humans, the sad truth is that they should be scared of humans. The number of sharks in the ocean is steadily dropping. There are a few reasons for this. For one, they mature quite slowly, over several years, and produce relatively few young. For another, overfishing of sharks is happening because more and more people want their fins. About 100 million sharks are killed every year according to National Geographic. Shark fin is a way for people to show off their wealth. Shark fins are also believed to have medicinal benefits, though there is no evidence or proof that they actually do.
32. What do most people think about sharks
A. They are ugly. B. They are important.
C. They are complicated. D. They are violent.
33. The author compares shark bites to lightning strikes to show they are
A. deadly B. unavoidable C. rare D. unpredictable
34. Why should sharks be scared of humans according to the author
A. Humans kill sharks in large quantities. B. Humans keep sharks to show off.
C. Humans catch sharks for medical research. D. Humans are greater in number than sharks.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. SOS: Save Our Sharks! B. Sharks: Killers or Misunderstood
C. Shark Fins: An Ecological Crisis D. Sharks: King of the Ocean

In the workplace, it’s crucial to avoid making promises we can’t keep. But how can we do this
One way to do this is by being realistic about our capabilities and timetable. For instance, a workmate asks us to complete a task within an extremely tight deadline, but we’ re already busy with other work.36We could say, “Let me check my current workload andget back to you on whether I can meet this deadline.”
37If we’ re not sure about the requirements of a task or project, we should askquestions before committing. For example, when a manager assigns a complex project, we can ask for more details about the resources available, and potential challenges. This way, we can make a more informed decision.
Moreover, we should learn to say no when necessary. 38It shows that werespect our own limitations and the importance of delivering quality work. For example, if we’re re asked to take on a task that we know is beyond our expert knowledge or skills, we can politely decline and suggest alternative solutions or people who might be better suited for the job. This action will earn us the respect of our workmates.39
Furthermore, it’s important to manage expectations. If we’ re asked to do something that may have uncertainties, we should communicate them upfront (先期地). For instance, we’re asked to prepare a presentation, but we can’t collect all the necessary data in time. Then, we could say, “40But I’ll do that and keep you updating on my progress.” Thisway, our superiors are aware of the potential risks and won’t be blindsided.
A. Communicating clearly is a wise choice.
B. Naturally, we can maintain a good reputation in the workplace.
C. Instead of immediately saying yes, take a moment to assess our schedule.
D. There might be some challenges with finding enough information.
E. Trusting each other really means helping each other in the workplace.
F. Doing this doesn’t mean we’re uncooperative.
G. We create a positive work environment where everyone can finish their jobs well.

第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a Saturday afternoon. I was having lunch when Dad told me to get ready. I became unhappy. I don’t like Saturdays! Even though it’s a holiday for most children, it is not for me because I need to go to football club.
Many kids love sports, but I am not one of them. I prefer to stay at home and read. I don’t like running, so in a team I am a bad player. The coach is tired of me and my teammates sometimes think I’m useless.
I have no idea how to play football. Usually, after practice my teammates would ask me to stay out of the game and I would just nod.
Last Thursday, the coach told us that we would be competing with another team in a month and many people would come to see the game. Our opponents (对手) were the winner last year and I froze and thought how awkward it would be if the team lost because of me. So I decided to practice hard for the match and I went to practice every single day.
After one month, when the game day came, my teammates were unwilling to take me in the team, and I also wished to stay away from the ground as well. But they happened to be short of one player and had no choice but to take me in the team.
Our team was the Big Blues. There was a great cheer on our arrival in the field. I got very nervous. The game started and within two minutes, I got a blue card. By the time I was allowed back, the score was two goals for each team and the next goal would decide the winning team.

Paragraph 1:
When the ball came towards me, I froze. My teammates were very tired and seemed worried. The opponents rushed towards me. Without thinking anymore, I found courage, and I kicked the ball with all my strength. The opponents didn’t think highly of me, so they didn’t think that I would be able to kick the ball so powerfully. As I kicked, the goalkeeper jumped towards the ball but missed it.
Paragraph 2:
Our team, The Big Blues, won the match! All my teammates ran towards me to lift me in the air. Since that day, I have gained some confidence and started to play better. My coach and teammates are also content with me and they try to improve my skills every time I play. Now I have realized that I always liked this sport, but my problem with it had something to do with the lack of encouragement I got. Now I can build on my confidence and I’ve realized I can also play this sport very well.
