Since the U. S. National Park Service (NPS) started keeping records in 1904, its mountain landscapes, seaside wildernesses, and high desert acres have registered more than 16 billion visits. These 3 parks are the superstars of the system, but they offer just a glimpse of the variety listed in the 429 park units of the NPS.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Established: 1934
Visitor Centers: Oconaluftee, Sugarlands, Cades Cove
Entrance Fees:$20 per vehicle for parking, $10 per person
The Smokies are known for their incredible biodiversity; it’s said that moving from the lowest to highest elevations within the park is the biological equivalent of traveling from Georgia to Maine. More than 1, 500 species of flowering plants, 240 types of birds, and around 50 kinds of fish live there.
Grand Teton National Park
Established: 1929
Visitor centers:All four are open from spring to fall; check the website for specific dates. Every center except the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve Center issues boat permits.
Entrance fee: None
Today, adventure athletes travel to the park to climb historic mountaineering routes, backpack into wildflower-strewn basins, or ski down advanced backcountry slopes in winter. But the park is also ideal for leisurely activities like biking, photography, and canoeing—set against the backdrop of the meandering Snake River, numerous lakes and streams, and the Grand Teton range.
Katmai National Park
Established: 1980
Visitor centers: Brooks Camp (open daily June 1 to September 29) ;King Salmon (open March to October) ; Robert F. Griggs (open daily early June to mid-September)
Entrance fees: None
Volcanoes and bears embody the wild heart of Katmai, located on the Alaska Peninsula. Within the borders of the national park and preserve lie 14 active volcanoes and North America’s largest population of protected brown bears. Visitors can hike and canoe in Katmai. They can fish waist-deep in rivers as clear as glass. And they can watch the best fish catcher of them all, the great Alaskan brown bear, sometimes diving underwater for prey, sometimes catching salmon in midair.

On a spring day, Guinness World Records held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title. Lewis, 74, began working at the Dorset resort when he was 16. “It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “You’re working and helping people. What could be better ”
His colleagues were just half his age. But he is still fighting fit. Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7. 5 minutes. They have to do a 25m pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim consecutively in under 50 seconds and run 200m along the beach in under 40 seconds. The tests are still reasonably comfortable for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3, 000 metres of sea swimming each month.
Lewis’s adventure began in 1965 when a police officer spotted that he was a keen swimmer and suggested he get his lifesaving badges. The following year he began volunteering as a lifeguard at the age of 16. Then he became part of the RNLI lifeguards in 2001 and began providing beach patrols for local authorities.
Now the RNLI patrols more than 240 beaches across the UK. Lewis laughed when asked if he had seen many changes. “The RNLI’s equipment in 2024 includes jetskis, rescue boats and quad bikes. When I started, we had a T-shirt, swimming trunks, a swimming hat, a coat if you were lucky and a rescue tube. It was really very different.”
His most memorable rescue took place in 2010 when three children got into trouble while swimming. There was a combination of wind and a lively spring tide. One of them was being hurled into a rock with severe cuts. The other two were being “knocked around” by the waves. Lewis swam out just with a rescue tube but managed to get all three back.
Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out rescues. “I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody.”
24. Why is the training of RNLI mentioned
A. To explain the importance of swimming skills.
B. To stress Lewis’s efforts and capacity.
C. To show demands of being a safeguard.
D. To describe the test process of fitness swimming.
25. What made Lewis begin his life-saving career
A. His voluntary experience. B. His passion for swimming.
C. An invitation from RNLI. D. A police officer’s suggestion.
26. What can be inferred from Lewis’s words in Paragraph 4
A. RNLI cares for the safety of lifeguards. B. RNLI currently needs more lifeguards.
C. Lifeguard work was not easy in the past. D. The former lifeguards were more skilled.
27. Which of the following best describes Lewis
A. Devoted and caring. B. Selfless and honest.
B. Determined and humorous. D. Generous and ambitious.
C
Thinking is an integral part of our daily lives. We analyze, reason, and think over to make decisions and solve problems. However, there are instances when our minds bypass this conscious thinking process and arrive at immediate conclusions or insights. This phenomenon is often called “thinking without thinking”, in other words, intuition. Despite its seemingly effortlessly nature, intuition may have positive effects on us.
Intuition may seem mysterious and magical for most of us, but research has shed light on the potential operation of intuition. Gladwell, a writer, explores numerous studies and real-life examples that demonstrate the power of intuition. One study examines the ability of art experts to determine the authenticity (真实性) of artworks. The study discovered that these experts could make accurate judgements within seconds of viewing a painting despite being unable to explain their reasoning. They have sharpened their intuition through years of experience and exposure to various artistic styles and techniques. Explorers like Gladwell proved that the brain can make incredibly accurate assessments based on subtle cues and patterns our conscious mind might overlook from an experimental viewpoint.
Back to our lives, intuition serves as a guideline in both personal and professional fields. Leaders who listen to their intuitive wisdom make innovative decisions that lead to success in business. In personal relationships, intuitive insights can help us understand the needs and feelings of others, fostering deeper connections and empathy.
Although intuition can provide valuable insights, it is not rock-solid. Bias (偏见) or emotional influences may cloud our intuitive judgements. To better use the power of intuition effectively, we can cultivate essential practices. Except taking part in activities that enable your subconscious mind to accumulate valuable knowledge and patterns, gathering additional dependable information to evaluate your intuition matters more than from my point. This practice helps develop a deeper understanding of the factors influencing your intuition.
28. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning the study on art experts
A. To reveal how intuition works. B. To identify what affects intuition.
C. To clarify what intuition is. D. To explain how intuition helps art evaluation.
29. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The intuitive ways of making decisions. B. The guideline on using intuition.
C. The wide application of intuition. D. The examples of intuition wisdom.
30. How can we use intuition effectively according to the author
A. By exploring thinking patterns. B. By assessing relevant information.
C. By conducting necessary practices. D. By obtaining knowledge about mind.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Method of Using Intuition. B. Intuition: A Rare Nature.
C. Intuition: A New Way of Thinking. D. Exploring the Power of Intuition.

Artificial intelligence (AI) may be the biggest winner of this year’s Nobel Prize. AI pioneers were recognized with the Nobel Prize in physics, while the Nobel Prize in chemistry also had AI-related contributions.
US scientist John Hopfield and British-Canadian Geoffrey Hinton won the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics for discoveries and inventions in machine learning that paved the way for the AI boom, according to Reuters.
In 1982, Hopfield created a network that helps computers store and recall patterns, similar to how our brains remember things. A year later, Hinton developed the Boltzmann machine, which allows computers to learn independently to recognize patterns in data, such as identifying specific objects in images.
As for the Nobel Prize in chemistry, US scientists David Baker and John Jumper, along with British computer scientist Demis Hassabis, won the prize. Half the prize was awarded to Baker “for computational protein design” while the other half was shared by Jumper and Hassabis for their development of the AI model AlphaFold2.
Scientists struggled for decades to predict how proteins fold into their 3D shapes that determine their function. However, AlphaFold2, developed by AI research laboratory DeepMind, can accurately predict the 3D structures of nearly all known proteins, showing great potential in the field of drug development.
“AI can be a powerful tool for solving problems that involve deriving (获得) outputs from inputs, showing its great potential in scientific research, “ Professor Yang Maojun from Tsinghua University told Science and Technology Daily.
In his view, AI applications are not limited to fields like biology, chemistry or physics. Their scope mainly depends on how well problems from the real world can be abstracted into a form that AI can learn and process, and whether there is sufficient real-world data to train and build deep learningnetworks.
AI’s importance in scientific research is increasingly evident (明显的). Yang believes that scientists should actively embrace this trend while remaining aware of Al’s limitations. Hinton expressed a similar concern at the Nobel press conference. “We also have to worry about a number of possible bad consequences, particularly the threat of these things getting out of control,” he said.
“Humans carry the responsibility for using this new technology in a safe and ethical way, for the greatest benefit of humankind,” said Ellen Moons, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics.
32. What was John Hopfield recognized for in the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics
A. Inventing the Boltzmann machine.
B. Creating AI models for image analysis.
C. Developing a network for pattern storage.
D. Designing a new type of computer processor.
33. What is the significance of AlphaFold2
A. It can synthesize (合成) new proteins for drug use.
B. It can forecast protein folding patterns.
C. It can analyze the genetic sequences (顺序) of proteins.
D. It can identify proteins related to diseases.
34. According to Yang Maojun, what is one factor that limits the scope of AI applications
A. The availability of real-world data.
B. The accuracy of AI training data.
C. The level of human involvement in AI learning.
D. The effectiveness of deep learning algorithms (算法).
35. What concern did Hinton raise about AI during the Nobel press conference
A. The risk of AI becoming unmanageable.
B. The potential for AI to replace human creativity.
C. The slow adoption of AI in scientific research.
D. The lack of ethical guidelines for AI development.
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2. 5 分,满分 12. 5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Nobody is coming to save you
As the title suggests, this article is about the idea that you can’t depend on other people.36However, it’s a message that certain people, myself included, desperately need to hear.
I want to be able to rely on others and trust them, and I genuinely try to do that. Yet, reality oftenlet me down.37At the end of the day, you have to realize that you are responsible for yourown life and outcomes. Nobody is coming to save you. You have to learn to save yourself.
38Hope that someone, somewhere, will read this and recognize that they’ve beenleaving their fate in the hands of others for too long. Hope that one day, we’ll all find our own paths: paths we’ve clawed our way onto, and paths that we rightfully belong on. Let no one burn down the ladder you’ve worked so hard to build. Let no one take that place on the podium where you belong.39
Every time I’ve relied on someone else, I’ve felt that familiar sting of disappointment. There have been so many times that I tried placing trust in people, only to be met with silence and inaction. Those moments are tough. They’ve made me doubt whether I should have expectations for anyone at all, or if it would be better to isolate myself to avoid disappointment. But I realize that those moments have become my greatest teachers. They’ve shown me the importance of self-reliance, of forging my own path, no matter how steep or rocky it may be. 40 It means recognizing the limits of others and understanding that, ultimately, I am the architect of my own destiny. Once you accept that no one is coming to save you, you also realize that no one can take power away from you. The moment you take responsibility for your own journey, you can move forward with purpose and determination. You don’t have to wait for someone else to unlock doors for you. You can create your own keys.
A. This doesn’t mean shutting people out completely.
B. So, as I keep moving forward, I’ll honor the chance.
C. It means that you have the power to save yourself.
D. I’m writing this not out of spite (恶意) or bitterness, but out of hope.
E. Promises aren’t kept, and I’ve been exhausted by life.
F. If you’ve put in the work and fought your way to the top, no one can take that away from you.
G. Naturally, this may come off as pessimistic and might contain some cruel truths.

Oh no. Coach Cafferty just said my name. For that event. The two-hundred-metre breaststroke (蛙泳) for the coming meet! Not the backstroke (仰泳) I had wished and practiced for so long!
Beads of sweat popped out over my upper lip. Morgan pressed her elbow into my side, trying to offer me moral support. But it didn’t help. My stomach sank to my knees like a brick in water. Morgan tried to convince me it would be fine. “Maybe Coach has more confidence in you than you think. Or maybe Coach Cafferty just want to give the rest a laugh when I sink to the bottom of the pool, “ I thought desperately. I walked towards Coach Cafferty and told her about my inability and my desire to quit this event. She frowned and asked if it was what I really wanted.
I hesitated. Placing her hand on my shoulder, she started smiling and encouraged me to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
The first practice was a disaster. I lost rhythm on my strokes. I messed up my turns. I even had to stop and catch my breath a few times. I felt everyone was laughing at me and my stomach twisted. How could I make it within just two weeks But once I dragged myself out of the water, exhausted and frustrated, Coach Cafferty thumbed up to me, saying I did really well and just needed more confidence in myself and more time to practice.
On the way back home, Morgan comforted me, “Dear, just ignore others. Race against yourself. Count your own strokes. Prove to yourself that you can do it.” With these words said to me almost every day, before or after each practice, something gradually changed: both how I swam the breaststroke and how I felt about the event as well as myself.
The meet finally came. I arrived at the pool hall, still a little bit worried. As each event clicked closer to mine, my knees shook. I bit my lip and looked out over the other swimmers. Morgan leaned forward. “Just swim your race. Remember, you can!”

A Hand craft Making Activity
Last week, our school organized a handcraft making activity, with the aim of promoting recycling and environmental protection. The materials used in this activity were all from daily recyclable items.
During the activity, we were divided into groups and each group created different handicrafts. Some made pencil holders from empty cans, while others made photo frames from cardboard boxes. We also learned some basic techniques of handcraft making, such as cutting, shaping and sticking.
Personally, I enjoyed the activity very much. Not only did I learn some new skills, but I also realized the value of recycling and reducing waste. I believe that small actions, such as reusing recyclable materials, can make a big difference in protecting our environment.
第二节读后续写 (满分25分)
Then the two-hundred-milestonebreaststroke was announced. Heart pounding, I took my position. Barely had a whistle blown before I plunged into the water like an arrow. Initially, I couldn’t focus on myself, with glances shot at other competitors from time to time. The racers on my both sides were so swift that they went ahead of me. Seized by tension, I laboured to accelerate but the distance between us got widened, anyhow. “Brush aside others. Just swim your race,” Morgan’s words lingered in my head. I pushed my arms out and pulled in towards my chest, as well as kicked the legs out and pulled back. Gradually, I could feel nothing but my own rhythm. Before I knew it, I had Swum 150 metres.
There was only 50 metres to go. However, my energy was giving out. My arms were on fire, my lungs were bursting and my legs were pillars of lead. “Prove to yourself that you can do it,” Morgan’s words occupied my mind. I gritted my teeth and pushed myself forward until the wall came into sight. I slapped it with what little power I had left. I came in last. As I dragged myself out of the water, there exploded thunderous claps and cheers. Morgan dashed over, throwing her arms around me. Coach Cafferty cast a satisfied grin at me. Suddenly, I was burning with a sense of fulfillment. The two-hundred-milestone breaststroke’s finish line was my new life’s startingline—always racing against myself.

M: I make sure to set my alarm for 6: 00 a. m. and get up at the same time everyday. That way I have two whole hours before our first lecture.

W: Isn’t this a bit risky, sir My dad is also a teacher and he says science can be dangerous.

W: That’s strange, there’s a lot of smoke coming out of the tube!

W: That doesn’t sound too bad. What position did you come in

M: Martha, did you hear about the storm that is happening in the south of the country
W: Yes, how could I not hear about it It’s all over the news.
M: But have you heard about Martin Harris
W: No. Who is that
M: Well, his story is in today’s paper. Listen: “Trouble in the south as rain continues to fall and the water continues to rise. One man fights not only for his life but for others as well. Martin Harris is a local man who owns a small boat. With water levels rising above the top s of most houses in the area, people are in great danger. Harris has been using his boat to go around and help people in need. He picks them up in his boat and takes them to safety. His actions are winning praise from people all over the country. If any of you readers find yourselves stuck in flood, the best advice is to try to get to a high, dry place before the water gets too high. If you cannot swim, find something that floats and hold on until you are found. “
W: Wow, Martin Harris is an amazing man.
M: We can all learn a lesson from him.
W: I think I will write him a letter to thank him for his service.
M: That is a great idea. I am sure he will appreciate that.

W: Hey, are you busy lately
M: Yes, I’m sorting through my notes. They’re a mess.
W: Why not try the Cornell Notes system
M: Cornell Notes
W: Yeah. It’s a method of organizing notes as you take them. You divide the paper into two sections: the note-taking section on the left and the key questions and words section on the right. You make the note-taking section twice the size of the key words section, and then you also leave two inches blank at the bottom of the page ——about five to seven lines in a standard notebook.
M: So then how do you take notes
W: Well, like usual, you note down the main ideas of the text or speech, but you avoid long ideas and sentences and use symbols instead. Then, to help with future review, you write any related questions on the left.
M: OK, that sounds logical. What then
W: Then, within 24 hours of taking the notes, you write a summary at the bottom five to seven lines of the page. This helps you increase your understanding of the topic.
M: I see. That sounds like a great method. I will try it next semester, but now I’ll just have to use the notes I have and get ready for the final exams.
17-20.
W: Good evening, gentlemen and boys! Thank you for being here this evening. We’re here to congratulate the top achievers of this year. The boys here have worked hard in order to be a part of this ceremony. Recognition of achievement can make us push ourselves and reach our full potential. The prizewinners are a true representation of everything that we value here at Hampton School. I have every confidence that you young men will be precisely the kind of young people who will make a positive difference to the country and the world. Your success will be built on being true to yourself. You should recognize your problems and doubts as well as your positive qualities. I remember listening to an interview with Andy Murray, one of the top tennis players in the world. After he was defeated in the first round of a tournament by a much lower ranked player, the media went crazy. However, Murray was straightforward and wise. “ Nobody died here, “ he said, “I only lost a tennis match, nothing more. “ We are proud of our prizewinners today. They should be proud of themselves. But let’s be clear, if you link motivation to winning prizes in life, you set yourself up for disappointment. The greatest prize of all is that you can look yourself in the eye and say, “I tried my absolute best. “

参考答案

Just swim your race, “ Morgan’s words lingered in my head.
“Prove to yourself that you can do it, “ Morgan’s words occupied my mind.
