Human-wildlife conflict is a big problem all over the world today, and it’s getting bigger. Imagine coming home and finding a baboon or two eating breakfast at your table! That would certainly be a conflict between a human, you, and wildlife, the baboons! Because baboons are wild, this type of conflict could be 16 .
In Cape Town, South Africa, humans meet with baboons more than ever, right in their own neighborhoods. Because in that region about half of the natural baboons could hardly find their food and places to live in, they needed to find new ways to get food. So they started going into urban areas and 17 the food they need for survival.
Baboons are very 18 animals. Once they learn that they can easily get food from humans, they won’t try as hard to hunt for their own food. People who live near there have to control this 19 by limiting the baboons’ access (接近) to humans food and garbage.
Both humans and wildlife need protection from each other. 20 in South Africa, there are people who work as baboon monitors. Their job is to keep baboons away from homes. Because baboons 21 loud noises, monitors use noise-making devices to frighten them away. They might also use paintballs to frighten the baboons.
The monitors don’t form relationships with the baboons, but they don’t mistreat them, either. They simply work to limit conflicts between humans and wildlife.

三、阅读理解

When Carolyn McDaniel gets up, his cat Buddy often comes in and meows. If McDaniel doesn’t understand him immediately, Buddy will be angry. McDaniel works at the animal research centre in New York. He is studying cats’ meow these days.
Listen to cats, and you’ll hear lots of sounds. Purring is a sign of a contented (满意的) cat. But cats purr when they’re in danger, too. Cats that hiss are not contented. They make the sound if they’re looking for food. However, chirr is a friendly greeting. Mother cats also chirr to call their children.
To understand cats’ language, McDaniel taped hundreds of cats’ meows in different situations. Then humans listened through headphones. People who were more familiar (熟悉的) with cats did better in understanding the meows. But even the cat owners got the right answers only about 30% of the time.
Why is it so difficult to understand cat’s meow Sam, who belongs to 15-year-old Jenna, makes a sound Meh-Meh when he sees birds outside. But 17-year-old Nick’s cat, Kitty, goes Mrak-Mrak in the same situation. Meows differ in the same situation. Still, cats themselves do all right at communicating their general feelings because they also use body language.
Now, McDaniel thinks that people would probably do much better in understanding cats’ meow with the help of videos, because we can see cats communicate (交流) a lot with body language: head position, eye contact, and even tail movement. “Body language can also be difficult to understand, but glad that we have found a new way at least,” says McDaniel.
22.When a cat is hungry, it may make the sound ________.
A.purr B.hiss C.chirr D.meh
23.What can we know from the passage
A.Cats owners can understand most of cat’s meows.
B.Cats have trouble communicating with each other.
C.Different sounds from cats may have the same meaning.
D.Body language makes it more difficult to understand cats’ meows.
24.The passage is mainly about ________.
A.a scientist who studies cats’ meow B.a study on understanding cats’ meow
C.a story between McDaniel and his cat D.a way to understand cats’ body language

It’s a popular idea that fish can’t remember anything for longer than seven seconds(秒). But these days, a study found that fish have much better memories than we thought. Some kinds of fish can even remember things from as long as 12 days ago, BBC reported.
In the study, researchers from MacEwan University in Canada trained African cichlids to go to a certain(具体的) area of their tank(鱼缸) to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again.
This showed that they could remember their past experiences. Researchers also found that after such a long break, the fish still went to the same place as before. Finally, scientists think that African cichlids might have a good memory.
An earlier study showed that they acted aggressively(有侵略性地) in front of certain fish, probably because they remembered their past fights. But until now, there was no clear evidence(证据).
Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also helps a fish a lot to live in the wild.
“If fish are able to remember a certain area with safe food, they can go back to that area without putting their lives in danger,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.
For a long time, people numbered fish far behind monkeys, dolphins(海豚) and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study gave scientists a new understanding of their intelligence(智商).
So next time you are watching your pet fish, you might feel closer to them—they may remember who you are.
