When I was a kid, if someone told me that I would grow up to become a published author and founder of a youth literacy (读写能力)foundation, I would have laughed and kept walking. Even now when I see the title of my latest picture book, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World, I shake my head, not quite believing that book has my name on it. But the truth is, this story comes from my own personal experience.
It took me a very long time to find my personal reading voice. In Valdosta, Ga., where I grew up, my community promoted two pathways to a better life for little boys like me: being an athlete and being an entertainer. I was no different than the other kids, so I did what felt natural: Play football and overlook school. School presented challenges every day and so did football practice, but overcoming physical adversity (逆境) was on trend with my neighborhood’s culture. Reading books not so much.
Fortunately, I went to college. That’s where my reading struggles really reared their ugly head. Trips to the grocery store were stressful because there was so much reading involved in the simple act of buying food. I would misread labels and grab the wrong items. Once, I picked up apple sauce thinking it was apple slices. I didn’t notice my mistake until I got home and realized that it was my inability to understand the differences in the wording on the labels that caused the mistake. I realized that I needed to make an important decision. If I wanted to be a better version of me, I had to become a stronger reader.
I joined a book club and read every free moment I had. My journey with reading also created a desire in me to inspire others who struggle with reading. So I started a nonprofit, Share the Magic Foundation, trying to transform the lives of children living in underserved communities through literacy.
4. What does the author think of his new book
A It’s beyond his expectation. B. It’s helpful for youth literacy.
C. It s full of humor and wisdom. D. It’s an exact record of his early life.
5. What was the root reason for the author s failure to find his reading voice
A. The influence of his community. B. His dream to be an entertainer.
C. The challenges he met in study. D. His preference for football.
6. What does the underlined phrase “reared their ugly head“ in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Changed. B. Concluded. C. Surfaced. D. Disappeared.
7. Which of the following best describes the author
A. Reflective and warm-hearted. B. Persuasive and absent-minded.
C. Creative and stubborn. D. Ambitious and cautious.
C
Decades of research have shown that health, income and employment status are major factors in predicting people’s satisfaction with their lives. However, researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK wanted to investigate what other activities or circumstances might improve mental health. “I was really drawn to looking into whether crafting might be good for your well-being because it’s so accessible, affordable and it’s already popular,” says Helen Keyes, a researcher at Anglia Ruskin University.
Keyes and her colleagues analvzed more than 7, 000 responses to the yearly Taking Part Survey, which asks people in England how they engage with activities such as arts and culture, sports and Internet use. All participants were also asked about their happiness, anxiety, loneliness, life satisfaction and if they felt their life was worthwhile.
More than a third of participants said they had done at least one art or craft activity in the previous year, including drawing, painting, photography, film-making or woodworking. Even after accounting for factors like health and employment status, researchers found that engaging in arts and crafts was associated with higher scores across their measures of mental health. The effect was modest — around 0.2 on a10- point scale — but crafting was a stronger predictor that someone felt their life was worthwhile compared with harder-to-change factors such as having a job.
“There is something about crafting that gives a sense of progress and self- expression in a way that employment often doesn’t,” says Keyes. “You get to be really proud of what you’re creating and see progress in front of your eyes in real time.” The positive effect of creative pursuits on a person’s sense that life is worthwhile was1.6 times higher than employment status. Arts and crafts also boosted (使增长)happiness and life satisfaction, but didn’t make a meaningful difference to reported loneliness, which may be because many crafts can be done solo.
“Promoting and supporting arts and crafts could be used as a preventive measure for mental health on a national scale,” says Keyes. “When people do it, they enjoy it. It’s an easy win.”
8. What can we learn from the survey
A. Crafting has no impact on health.
B. About 1,000 participants do regular crafts.
C. Doing crafts greatly improves test scores.
D. Craft activities boost the sense of value.
9. What’s an advantage of crafting over employment
A. It benefits personal growth.
B. It brings visible improvements.
C. It raises the satisfaction with life.
D. It reduces the sense of being alone,
10. What could Keyes agree according to the last paragraph
A. Mental health needs to be thought first.
B. Arts and crafts can cure mental issues.
C. The study provides a referable (可与……相关的) advice.
D. Arts and crafts can be quite easy.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Arts and Crafts Boost Well- being More than Employment
B. Arts and Crafts Can Benefit People in All Aspects
C. More People Are Satisfied with Their Lives
D. People Should Be Interested in Arts and Crafts
D
For decades, scientists thought of the brain as the most valuable and consequently most closely guarded part of the body. Locked safely behind the blood-brain barrier, it was broadly free of the harm of viruses and the battles started by the immune system (免疫系统). Then, about 20 years ago, some researchers began to wonder: is the brain really so separated from the body The answer, according to a growing body of evidence, is no.
The list of brain conditions that have been associated with changes elsewhere in the body is long and growing. Changes in the makeup of the microorganisms in the digestive system have been linked to disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. There is also a theory that infection during pregnancy could lead to brain diseases in babies.
The effect is two-way. There is a lengthening list of symptoms not typically viewed as disorders of the nervous system, but the brain plays a large part in them. For example, the development of a fever is influenced by a population of nerve cells that control body temperature and appetite. Evidence is mounting that cancers use nerves to grow and spread.
The interconnection between the brain and body has promising implications for our ability to both understand and treat illnesses. If some brain disorders start outside the brain, then perhaps treatments for them could also reach in from outside. Treatments that take effect through the digestive system, the heart or other organs, would be much easier and less risky than those that must cross the blood-brain barrier.
It also works in the opposite direction. Study shows mice have healthier hearts after receiving stimulation to a brain area involved in positive emotion and motivation. Activation of the brain reward centre — called the ventral tegmental area (VTA) — seems to cause immune changes that contribute to it. Working out how this happens could help to destroy cancers, enhance responses to vaccines and even re-evaluate physical diseases that, for centuries, have not been considered as being psychologically driven.
12. What do the researchers focus on about the brain
A. Its protecting system. B. Its exposure to diseases.
C. Its controlling function. D. Its connection to the body.
13. How does the author support his idea in paragraph 2
A. By explaining a theory. B. By providing examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By presenting cause and effect.
14. Which best describes treatments that do not cross the blood-brain barrier
A. Cheaper. B. More specific.
C. Safer. D. More direct.
15. What does the study suggest in the last paragraph
A. Brain health depends on immune changes.
B. Brain stimulation leads to negative emotions.
C. The brain can help enhance psychological health.
D. The brain may be key to treating physical diseases.

Grandfather was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would visit him often going home after school.
No matter how rotten I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything. My secrets were safe. Whenever there was a problem, he gave me the tools to fix it. I knew I would always find the best answer from him. He always understood. He loved me.
I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs. Ferguson’s house. I hit one pitch just right and… slam! It was a home run that soared high and away, and ended up breaking Old Lady Ferguson’s kitchen window! We all ran!
Walking home, my best friend, Tom, asked, "How will she ever know who did it She’s blinder than a bat!” He had a point.
I was afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. I didn’t know what she would do. I tried to calm down. However, my stomach was in knots. On the way home, I imagined that she was a mean witch (女巫) chasing me, and the further way I ran, the larger she grew… until finally she towered over the whole town, seeing my every move with an evil eye. Thoughts rushed through my mind. Would Mrs. Ferguson stay mad at me Would she call police Worse still, would she tell my parents. I couldn’t even imagine the disappointment on Mom and Dad’s face. They were hoping I would act honestly and in a responsible way.
I decided to stop by Grandpa’s. I felt ashamed. I wanted to hide. I wanted to knock my head against a tree a thousand times and make the world just go away — as if punishing myself could undo things.
But inside me a voice said: “I would tell everything to Grandpa.”
“I was wrong,” I told him, with my head down. He must have known something was up by the expression on my face. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn’t.

Fortunately I went to college.

5. What was the root reason for the author s failure to find his reading voice
A. The influence of his community. B. His dream to be an entertainer.
C. The challenges he met in study. D. His preference for football.
6. What does the underlined phrase “reared their ugly head“ in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Changed. B. Concluded. C. Surfaced. D. Disappeared.
7. Which of the following best describes the author
A. Reflective and warm-hearted. B. Persuasive and absent-minded.
C. Creative and stubborn. D. Ambitious and cautious.
【答案】4. A 5. A 6. C 7. A

【答案】
But he just listened while I continued talking. “I was wrong. I hate myself for what I did”, I told him, with my head down. I didn’t know what to do to make things right. I had been afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me. Finally my grandpa said, “What would you do if you were her ”After a while, I replied, “One solution is to tell her that I am sorry and offer to fix her window.”
Hearing the decision, grandpa smiled. “Doing what is right is not always easy,” he said, handing me the phone, “I am proud of you.” He did not make me do it. It was always my choice. As it turned out, Mrs. Ferguson was very kind and we even became really close friends. “Admitting what you are not proud of is the hardest thing,” said Grandpa. “Choosing to be honest makes others trust and respect you.”
