Is the world too crowded Well, that’s a hard question to answer. It’s all a matter of perspective (视角). In Montana, you might drive for a mile in any direction and not see another human being. In Macao, 60,000 people live in every square mile!
What is true is that the world’s population doesn’t stay the same. It has been increasing at a very fast rate (比例). That’s in part because in each generation (代) there are more people who then have children than in the last generation.
Five hundred years ago, the population of the world was about 460 million. In 1920s, the world’s population was under 2.5 billion (十亿). Right now it is doubling every 40 years. That means, if this rate of growth continues, when you are a parent, there will be twice as many people on the earth as there are now. Wow! Now that’s a whole lot of people! Soon the world’s population will probably reach 7 billion. Some people worry about that! But there is a lot of disagreement about just how many people on the earth equals (相当于) too many people. But everyone agrees that the more people there are, the more resources (资源) the world needs to feed, house and take care of all of them, and the more need there is to think carefully about how we live and use the earth’s resources.

In the past, man did not think about the protection of the environment. Today, the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources (资源) too quickly, and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals (化学制品). Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear and nothing will grow on the land. Yet, we continue to use bigger and more powerful (强大的) machines to cut down more and more trees. We know that if the population of the world continues to rise at the present rate (速度), in a few years, there will not be enough food. What can we do to solve these problems
If we eat more vegetables and less meat, we will easily get more food. Land that is used to grow crops (作物) can feed five times more people than land where animals are kept. The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control. Finally, if we educate (教育) people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner living place in the future.
The Importance of 41 the Environment
Problems people are making Catching more 42 , cutting down more trees...
Ways to 43 these problems Eating more vegetables and less meat, using modern methods of birth control and 44 people to consider (考虑) the problems.
Aim Having a better and cleaner place to 45 in the future.
