In 2009, the economic downturns hit my family and my town of Hamilton pretty hard. I set up Missouri Star Quilt Company as a way of earning money for my retirement while doing something I loved. But like almost every small business at the time, Missouri Star wasn’t attracting much attention. To help get the word out, my son suggested we film some tutorials (教程) and post them to YouTube.
“I’ve never thought of it that way before. That’s interesting!” I answered. “But what on earth is a tutorial Tell me more about it.”
Back then, I had never visited YouTube, but I decided to give it a try. I set up my sewing machine (缝纫机) in a comer of the shop and my son began to shoot our first video on a handheld camera. We didn’t even lake the trouble to close the shop door because there were few customers. Those first videos didn’t always look nice, but I think people admired me for the fact that I was making a hobby that sometimes felt frightening to learn more approachable.
Week by week, we started seeing our views and follower numbers go up. We first got 1,000 followers, and then 10,000. And while our online following was growing, we started getting some new visitors in real life, too. The customers picked up! And they were coming from everywhere.
By 2012, we had over 250,000 followers and our sales grew quickly. We decided to play apart in improving our community. One by one, we opened 12 quilting shops and partnered with talented chefs, cooks and bakers in our community to help them open their own business. In the small town with a population of 1,800, Missouri Star Quilt Company now employs over 400 people.
Now we are regularly receiving large groups of visitors to Missouri Star Quilt Company shops. Great as those numbers are, the thing that makes me happiest is what I did in that very first video: teaching someone how to quilt. I’m so happy YouTube has given me the opportunity to share my passion with others. It’s meant the world to my small business, to my community and to me.

A survey of 787 members of the Society of Authors (SoA) has found that a third of translators and a quarter of illustrators have lost work to generative (生成式的) artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Translators are also more likely to use AI to support their work, with 37% of those who were surveyed saying they have done so, followed by 25% of non-fiction writers.
The survey explores the experiences of those in creative careers with AI systems, and their views and concerns about the future impact on creative careers. The survey’s participants include writers of fiction and non-fiction, playwriters and poets as well as journalists, illustrators and translators.
Only one in ten illustrators report having made use of AI systems in their work, compared to a fifth of fiction writers and a quarter of non-fiction writers. Meanwhile, around 3 in 10 illustrators and writers say that they have used generative AI to come up with ideas.
The survey also stresses the level of concern about the future impact of AI on creative work, with almost two-thirds of fiction writers and over half of non-fiction writers saying that they believe generative AI will impact their future income in a bad way. This concern is even more prevalent among translators and illustrators, with almost three-quarters from both groups worried about their future income because of AI.
The participants all think it necessary to make laws on generative AI when it comes to copyright holders’ being asked for permission, credited and compensated (补偿). Commenting on the findings, the SoA has said that there is “an immediate need” for laws in terms of generative AI systems.
“No one expects generative AI lo be un-invented, and we all know its potential to be a convenient and useful tool,” said Nicola Solomon, chairman of the Creators’ Rights Alliance and he SoA chief executive. “But it is not too late to ensure that it is developed as well as used in a proper way, and generative AI must remain a tool to support and enhance human-made creative works, not a cheap replacement of them.”

Scientists say the drying Great Salt Lake in Utah is now becoming a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions (排放) that are causing the climate lo warm, according to a new study.
The Great Salt Lake has reduced in area by almost half in recent years. “Human-caused desiccation (干涸) of the Great Salt Lake is making huge areas of the lake bed come into sight and giving off large quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere,” said Soren Brothers, the museum’s climate change curator.
The researchers found that the drying lake bed gave off 4.1 million tons of CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which would translate to a 7% increase in Utah’s human-caused emissions. According to scientists, 4 million tons of CO2 is equal to the total annual emissions of 140 passenger planes.
Scientists say the state is as dry as it’s been in 1,200 years. The drought has been made worse by climate change. Agriculture has also played a huge role in the lake’s present situation. Upstream water diversions (改道) for farms and dairies have resulted in less lows into the lake. Utah’s rapid population growth is also a reason.
The loss of water has serious impacts on the lives of animals and people. Researchers in Utah have begun to discover sharp reductions in shorebird populations as a result of brine shrimp dying out. Dust storms and air pollution, born out of a dried-up lake bed, are also a major concern for Utah residents. That’s worrisome for the majority of Utah’s 3.3 million population who live near the lake.
The Great Salt Lake’s levels have rebounded (回升) slightly in recent years due to the last two snowy winters. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox promised to prevent the lake from drying up on his watch. “For generations, the lake was seen as kind of this dead thing that just happens to be there and will always be there,” Cox told NPR in April. “And now that people are realizing there’s a possibility that it might not always be here, that has reminded people and attracted their attention in a positive way.”

In 2009, the economic downturns hit my family and my town of Hamilton pretty hard. I set up Missouri Star Quilt Company as a way of earning money for my retirement while doing something I loved. One by one, we opened 12 quilting shops and partnered with talented chefs, cooks and bakers in our community to help them open their own business. A survey of 787 members of the Society of Authors (SoA) has found that a third of translators and a quarter of illustrators have lost work to generative (生成式的) artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Translators are also more likely to use AI to support their work, with 37% of those who were surveyed saying they have done so, followed by 25% of non-fiction writers.
The survey explores the experiences of those in creative careers with AI systems, and their views and concerns about the future impact on creative careers. Scientists say the drying Great Salt Lake in Utah is now becoming a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions (排放) that are causing the climate lo warm, according to a new study.

In 2009, the economic downturns hit my family and my town of Hamilton pretty hard. I set up Missouri Star Quilt Company as a way of earning money for my retirement while doing something I loved. But like almost every small business at the time, Missouri Star wasn’t attracting much attention. To help get the word out, my son suggested we film some tutorials (教程) and post them to YouTube.
“I’ve never thought of it that way before. That’s interesting!” I answered. “But what on earth is a tutorial Tell me more about it.”

By 2012, we had over 250,000 followers and our sales grew quickly. We decided to play apart in improving our community. One by one, we opened 12 quilting shops and partnered with talented chefs, cooks and bakers in our community to help them open their own business. In the small town with a population of 1,800, Missouri Star Quilt Company now employs over 400 people.
Now we are regularly receiving large groups of visitors to Missouri Star Quilt Company shops. Great as those numbers are, the thing that makes me happiest is what I did in that very first video: teaching someone how to quilt. I’m so happy YouTube has given me the opportunity to share my passion with others. It’s meant the world to my small business, to my community and to me.

A survey of 787 members of the Society of Authors (SoA) has found that a third of translators and a quarter of illustrators have lost work to generative (生成式的) artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Translators are also more likely to use AI to support their work, with 37% of those who were surveyed saying they have done so, followed by 25% of non-fiction writers.
The survey explores the experiences of those in creative careers with AI systems, and their views and concerns about the future impact on creative careers. The survey’s participants include writers of fiction and non-fiction, playwriters and poets as well as journalists, illustrators and translators.
Only one in ten illustrators report having made use of AI systems in their work, compared to a fifth of fiction writers and a quarter of non-fiction writers. Meanwhile, around 3 in 10 illustrators and writers say that they have used generative AI to come up with ideas.
The survey also stresses the level of concern about the future impact of AI on creative work, with almost two-thirds of fiction writers and over half of non-fiction writers saying that they believe generative AI will impact their future income in a bad way. This concern is even more prevalent among translators and illustrators, with almost three-quarters from both groups worried about their future income because of AI.
The participants all think it necessary to make laws on generative AI when it comes to copyright holders’ being asked for permission, credited and compensated (补偿). Commenting on the findings, the SoA has said that there is “an immediate need” for laws in terms of generative AI systems.

Scientists say the drying Great Salt Lake in Utah is now becoming a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions (排放) that are causing the climate lo warm, according to a new study.
The Great Salt Lake has reduced in area by almost half in recent years. “Human-caused desiccation (干涸) of the Great Salt Lake is making huge areas of the lake bed come into sight and giving off large quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere,” said Soren Brothers, the museum’s climate change curator.
The researchers found that the drying lake bed gave off 4.1 million tons of CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which would translate to a 7% increase in Utah’s human-caused emissions. Scientists say the state is as dry as it’s been in 1,200 years. The drought has been made worse by climate change. Agriculture has also played a huge role in the lake’s present situation. Upstream water diversions (改道) for farms and dairies have resulted in less lows into the lake. Utah’s rapid population growth is also a reason.
The loss of water has serious impacts on the lives of animals and people. Researchers in Utah have begun to discover sharp reductions in shorebird populations as a result of brine shrimp dying out.
