In 1983, a non-traditional entrant decided to race. A 61-year-old farmer, Cliff Young, came dressed in overalls and work boots. At first, most thought he had come to watch the race. When he picked up his racing number, it created a bit of a stir.
A reporter asked him, “Who are you, and what are you doing ”
He replied, “I’m Cliff Young. I’m from a large farm where we run sheep outside of Melbourne.”
He went on to say, “… I grew up on a farm where we couldn’t afford horses or four-wheel drives, and the whole time I was growing up — until about four years ago when we finally made some money and got a four-wheeler — whenever the storms would come, I’d have to go out and round up the sheep. We had 2,000 sheep on 2,000 acres. Sometimes, I’d have to run those sheep for two or three days. It took a long time, but I’d catch them. I believe I can run this race: It’s only two more days. Five days. I’ve run sheep for three.”
When the race began, the professionals quickly jumped out to an early lead. Young’s gait (步态) was more of a slow walk than a running style, as he moved freely without using much energy. When other runners stopped for the night to sleep and rest, Cliff continued to move. Although he was still far behind, he continued to make his path to the finish line.
Every night, he pulled a little closer to the lead pack. By the last night, he had moved into first place. In a fable-like fashion, the tortoise had passed all of the hares. The 61-year-old, with no teeth, won first place, breaking the race record time by 9 hours! After the race, Cliff said that he imagined he was running after sheep and trying to outrun a storm. His finishing time was five days, 15 hours, and 4 minutes.

C. He was quite confident to finish the race. D. He felt it important for him to win the race.
7. What mainly made Cliff the last winner
A. The storm. B. The imagination.

C
The first drawings on walls appeared in caves (洞穴) thousands of years ago. Modern graffiti (涂鸦) seems to have appeared in Philadelphia in the early 1960s, and by the late sixties it had reached New York. The new art form really took off in the 1970s, when people began writing their names, or “tags (标签)”, on buildings all over the city.
In the early days, the “taggers” were young street men who were trying to mark their spaces. They worked in groups and called what they did “writing” — the word “graffiti” was first used by The New York Times and the writer Norman Mailer. Art galleries in New York began buying graffiti in the early seventies. But at the same time that it began to be considered as an art form, John Lindsay, the then mayor of New York, declared (宣告) the first war on graffiti. By the 1980s it became much harder to write on subway trains without being caught and instead many of the graffiti artists began using roofs of buildings.
The argument over whether graffiti is art is still going on. Peter Vallone, a New York City councillor, thinks that graffiti done with permission can be art, but if it is on someone else’s buildings it is against the law. On the other hand, Felix, a member of the Berlin-based group Reclaim Your City, says that graffiti shows and makes cities livelier.
Graffiti is now sometimes big business. The Frenchman Blek le Rat and the British artist Banksy have become internationally famous by producing works which often make humorous points. Works by Banksy have been sold for over 100,000.
8. When did modern graffiti start to become popular
A. In the 1960s. B. In the 1970s. C. In the 1980s. D. In the 1990s.
9. Who created the word “graffiti”
A. Some street artists. B. Art galleries in New York.
C. A newspaper and an author. D. The mayor of New York.
10. Who may have the strongest attitude against graffiti
A. John Lindsay, the then mayor of New York.
B. Peter Vallone, a New York City councillor
C. Felix, a member of the Berlin-based group Reclaim Your City
D. The British artist Banksy.
11. What is the passage mainly about
A. The art of graffiti. B. The development of graffiti.
C. The business of graffiti. D. Different opinions on graffiti.
D
While you’re thinking of the perfect gifts for your loved ones this holiday season, male scorpionflies are making the perfect spitballs for theirs. Though spitballs sound unpleasant to us, the female scorpionfly — a brown, thin-bodied, winged insect less than an inch long — finds the nutrients (营养物质) -packed ball a tasty treat. In fact, while she eats the soft and sticky goodness, she rewards the male with an opportunity to mate with her.
Scorpionflies aren’t the only gift-giving animals besides humans; spiders, squid, snails, birds and many others try to impress with presents. Most of the gifts exchanged among these species are marriage gifts — that is anything that’s exchanged during mating or courtship (求偶) to increase the gifter’s chance at reproduction.
In a rare, cross-species (物种) exchange, crows are even known to give gifts to humans. “We’ve recorded it, and many people have seen it,” says John Marzluff, a professor of wildlife science at the University of Washington. Marzluff has heard several stories of crow gifts. One crow returned a woman’s fake teeth. Another, after being freed from a fence, brought a hunted creature to its human rescuer. Across the internet, people share stories of crows leaving them little treasures in exchange for food. “These are very social animals,” Marzluff says, “and there’s no reason to suspect (怀疑) that they wouldn’t form bonds (关系) or associate with other species.”
The basic drive behind the gift-giving (to get a mate or to form a bond) is a good reminder for humans of the true purpose of holiday gifts: to create and strengthen social relationships so our loved ones continue to be healthy and happy.
12. What do know about spitballs and scorpionflies in paragraph 1
A. Scorpionflies will fight for spitballs.
B. Scorpionflies can get spitballs easily.
C. Spitballs are unpleasant to scorpionflies.
D. Spitballs can win female scornpionflies’ favor.
13. According to paragraph 2, marriage gifts are something exchanged for _________.
A. help B. thanks C. friendship D. reproduction
14. Why are crows mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To introduce some social species.
B. To show how thankful crows can be.
C. To give an example of cross-species gift exchange.
D. To prove humans and animals can form close bonds.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. Some Animals Give Gifts to Humans.
B. Some Animals Give Gifts to Each Other.
C. The Reasons Why We Give Gifts to Each Other.
D Humans Aren’t the Only Animals That Give Gifts.
