I was in my mid-20s when I fell into one of the most poisonous relationships of my life. I remember buying my first self-help book, which promised I could be healed of anything. I couldn’t put it down in days. Over the next 15 years, I bought hundreds of self-help books, courses and apps, and tracked down every self-styled personal improvement expert in the hope that they could teach me how to become happier, more confident and more lovable.
Growing up in an environment of addiction and family conflict made me desperate for self-improvement. I believed self-help authors could be the instructors I had never found. My dependency became strong after my father died in 2022. I managed to spend an enormous amount of time reading about how to grieve (哀痛) well instead of doing the right things: sitting with my feelings, allowing myself to cry and processing the loss.
My dependency on self-help had become poisonous, and something had to give. It started to dawn on me that instead of helping me, the advice was making me feel worse. It took a deep conversation with a loved one to recognise that in trying to change my life, I was trying to change things that were out of my control. Instead of focusing on who I wanted to become, I had to quit self-help to learn and accept who I really was. Spending time alone, often walking, and listening to my thoughts without trying to silence or change them helped.
Since I quit my self-help walking stick, I’ve realized that focusing all my energy on improving myself can really take the joy out of life. It makes happiness conditional: only when I look that way can I be loved. It can also stop me from unconditionally accepting my imperfectly perfect self. After a long time, I am finally coming round to the idea that perhaps I never needed fixing at all.
4. Why did the author become dependent on self-help materials
A. To build good relationships. B. To test a book’s promise.
C. To find guides to better herself. D. To heal from her father’s loss.
5. What can we learn about the author from paragraph 2
A. She became addicted to drugs in childhood.
B. She found a proper way to honour her father.
C. Long time of reading helped her out of feeling bad.
D. Her upbringing environment greatly influenced her.
6. What drove the author to stop self-improvement at last
A. An in-depth talk with a beloved.
B. Her awareness of poisonous relationships.
C. The suggestion from an instructor.
D. Constant self-improvement learning.
7. What does the author want to convey in the passage
A. Accepting who you are. B. Becoming a better self.
C. Learning to look lovable. D. Looking at the bright side.

Fantasy author George Martin has spent 12 years working on The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth part in the series that excited the book fans. With no publishing date in sight, one fan decided to write the story himself, or rather, he asked ChatGPT to write it for him. Surprisingly, the AI quickly produced a 683,276-word work of high quality. But this raises an important question whether AI programs like ChatGPT really produce the kind of writing that moves us and speaks to our souls.
“There is a misunderstanding that large language models are not good at writing in an artistic style,” an author Sean Michaels tells BBC. “In fact, they can do it easily and quite well, just like all the image-generating (生成) software can make photos in the styles of Wes Anderson or David Lynch.”
For his novel Do You Remember Being Born, in which a poet is approached by a tech company to coauthor a collection of poems with their AI, Michaels created a special type of ChatGPT he called “Moorebot”, which through training learned to write in the style of real-world poet Marianne Moore, further making the distinction (区分) between human and machine unclear.
Although some writers oppose the rise of AI out of concern for their jobs, others have put the debate in an older, broader dialogue on the meaning and purpose of art. The Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has openly expressed his dislike of machine learning. Looking beyond the standard definition of creativity — creating something new and original — Kaufman describes art as any form of expression that establishes an emotional connection between people.
Even if AI were capable of writing something emotional, which Michaels claimed it can, Kaufman would refuse to recognise this as art. “If I read a poem,” he recently said in a statement on AI, “and that poem moves me. I am in love with the person who wrote it. I can’t be in love with a computer program. I can’t, because it isn’t anything.”
8. Why is the story of the book fan told
A. To show the popularity of the series.
B. To introduce an important question on AI.
C. To arouse concern about human writers.
D. To prove the writing efficiency of ChatGPT.
9. What are paragraph 2 and 3 mainly about
A. The way that AI writing works.
B. A misunderstanding of ChatGPT.
C. An example in favour of AI creation.
D. The writing methods of Michael’s novel.
10. Which can be considered as art according to Charlie Kaufman
A. A program-generated novel. B. A perfect copy of Wes Anderson’s.
C. An emotional poem by ChatGPT. D. A girl’s drawing to her mum.
11. What can be the best title of the text
A. Can AI Create True Art B. ChatGPT: Greatest Writer Ever
C. The Rise and Fall of AI Programs. D. Can Hi-Tech Have a Promising Future
D
“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day ” So begins one of the most famous poems in all of English literature. Shakespeare’s “Sonnet XVIII” is also one of the most frequently cited in usage books as support for the view that “compare to” means to express a likeness, whereas “compare with” is used for contrasts.
But the picture is not simple. Shakespeare goes on to say that the woman he is addressing is “more lovely” and that she, unlike a summer’s day, will never fade. Some commentators say, then, that the question is meant to be answered with a “no”, because of the differences he then stresses. In that case, though, what follows is a textbook example of comparing her “with”, not “to”, a summer’s day.
Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage examined many literary examples of “compare” followed by “with” and “to”. Its editors found that after the active form (compare) the distinction is often kept. After the past participle (compared) the variation is in effect random (随机地).
Usage experts understand that drawing up neat rules can be tough. Yet careful writers know that some distinctions are important, and that underestimating these invites confusion. It is clear enough why people mix up “flout” (藐视) and “flaunt” (炫耀), including sensible writers who are in a hurry. But if you flout the distinction, you risk appearing to flaunt your ignorance.
Relaxed observers sometimes note that language changes, as though nothing can be done about that, and, since the process is natural, nothing should be attempted. But two different words collapsing into one really can make language lose its subtleties. Using “strategy” for ‘tactics” — one refers to the long-term plan to win a war, the other the short-term methods used to win a battle — should unsettle not only military experts but also individuals outside the military. Some people are good tacticians and terrible strategists.
Which are which can be hard to tell. But if you can take the time to distinguish “compare to” from “compare with”, understanding those rules worth fighting for is surely worth the effort too.
12. What does the author intend to show in the first two paragraphs
A. The status of Sonnet XVIII. B. The importance of correct usage.
C. The language skill of Shakespeare. D. The complexity of word choice.
13. What might the editors discover about “compare to” and “compare with”
A. They may mean differently in different forms.
B. They are used with equal frequency.
C. They are always interchangeable.
D. They can be told apart easily.
14. What may the underlined word “subtleties” mean in paragraph 5
A. Literary charms. B. Important details. C. Similar meanings. D. Military functions.
15. What does the author think of language rules
A. We have to take it as they change. B. They cause confusion in writing.
C. We should learn those valuable. D. They are too difficult to follow.

When I was asked to take part in a forest bathing, I packed a swimsuit, assuming it must involve a refreshing swim in the water. ____16____
I met Forest Therapy (治疗) guide Melanic Choukas- Bradley and several other women who’d come along for the adventure at an urban forest. Here, I began to get it. Forest bathing isn’t a bath. We sat on the banks of the river, but we did not get in the water. ____17____ We did walk the forest tracks, but we wandered with no destination in mind.
The aim of forest bathing, Choukas-Bradley explained, is to slow down and become fully bathed in the natural environment. She helped us tune in to the forest’s smells, tastes and sights. ___18___ As we passed through the trees, we touched their trunks, feeling the roughness beneath our fingers. We smelled the flowers, each breath being a celebration of nature’s beauty.
There’s a growing body of evidence that shows forest bathing can help boost mood and reduce stress. ____19____ A 2011 study comparing city walks to forest walks found the forest environment led to greater reductions in blood pressure, despite both activities requiring equal physical effort.
____20____ Most of human history was spent in environments that lack buildings and walls, and our bodies have adapted to living in the natural world. But today most of us spend much of our life indoors. Perhaps the new forest bathing trend is a recognition that many of us need a little nudge to get back out there.
A. It’s not a hike, either.
B. It turns out that my interpretation was literal.
C. The benefits of nature can be accessed simply.
D. Forest bathing frees us from worldly engagements.
E. The idea that spending time in nature is good is not new.
F. Indeed, medical researchers have demonstrated its benefits.
G. We took in the peaceful surroundings by using all our senses.
