One summer night in a seaside cottage, a boy felt himself lifted from bed. Then, with the swiftness of a dream, he was held in his father’s arms out onto the nearby beach. Overhead the sky was dotted with stars. “Watch!” Incredibly, as his father spoke, one of the stars moved. In a line of golden fire it flashed across the astonishing heavens. And before the wonder of this could fade, another star leaped from its place, then another, plunging (猛降) towards the restless sea.
“What’s this ” the child whispered.
“Shooting stars. They come every year on a certain August night. I thought you’d like to see the show.”
That was all: just an unexpected glimpse of something mysterious and beautiful. But, back in bed, the child stared for a long time into the dark, knowing that all around the quiet house, the night was full of the silent music of the falling stars.
Decades have passed, but I remember that night still, because I was the fortunate boy whose father believed that a new experience was more important for a small boy than an unbroken night’s sleep. No doubt I had all the usual childhood entertainment, but those are forgotten now. What I remember is the night of the shooting stars, the telegraph we made that really worked, and the things we had found that were encouraged to exhibit — anything unusual or beautiful — snake skins, seashells, flowers,... I remember the thought-provoking (引人深思的) books left by my bedside that broadened my horizons and sometimes actually changed my life.
My father had the gift for opening doors for his children and leading them into areas of splendid newness. This subtle art of adding dimensions to a child’s world doesn’t necessarily require a great deal of time. It simply involves doing things more often with our children instead of for them or to them.
24. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean
A. The child was still addicted to the beautiful scenery just now.
B. The child was too frightened to fall asleep because of darkness.
C. The child wanted to listen more to the music about falling stars.
D. The child felt grateful to his father for what he showed him.
25. All the things the author remember from his childhood are _______.
A. unusual and novel B. dangerous and demanding
C. strange and uncommon D. educational and thought-provoking
26. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Parents should intervene more in their children’s learning.
B. Parents should push their children to try to do everything on their own.
C. Parents should devote energy to exploring new things for their children.
D. Parents should encourage children to be curious and explore new things in life.
27. What’s this passage mainly about
A. Limitless knowledge B. Father, the hero of my life
C. Curiosity aroused that night D. The unusual things in my life
C
Children who were behind in their development at age 4-5were almost three times as likely to have been out of education, employment, or training at age 16-17, analysis of pupil data has found.
4-5-ycar-olds in England are assessed by the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, and those who reach the boundary of a “good level of development” are considered “school ready”.
The new study in the journal BMC Public Health has found a significant gap in Not in Education, Employment or Training(NEET)outcomes between those who were ready and unready for primary school. The research drew on data from more than 8,000 Bradford young people whose records are linked as part of the Connected Bradford project. The research found that 11%of children who were not school ready went on to be NEET at 16-17, compared to just 4%of children who were school ready.
Lead author Dr Matthew Warburton, Research Officer at Leeds’School of Psychology, said: “These findings tell us that there are clear, early indicators for children and young people being at risk of disadvantage in late adolescence. As schools routinely collect this data, the research could be used to kickstart early intervention in schools based on primary school readiness.”
The research team, which also included academics from Lancaster University and the Bradford Institute for Health Research, say this shows a clear need for early intervention by schools to reduce disadvantage in later life.
This echoes the message from a series of N8 Child of the North and Centre for Young Lives reports on the need to put children and young people first. Senior author Dr Amy Atkinson, Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Lancaster University said: “Data from the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile is readily available for millions of children and young people in England. This information could, and should, be used to identify pupils at increased risk of becoming NEET.”
28. What does the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile probably do
A. Record employment status.
B. Monitor teenagers’progress.
C. Evaluate primary school students.
D. Assess 4-5-year-olds’development.
29. What does Dr Matthew imply about the current situation of schools
A. They lack data for early intervention.
B. They lack data to identify at-risk students.
C. Early intervention is required.
D. Early intervention have been done.
30. What do we know about the data according to the last paragraph
A. It is rarely used in England.
B. It is not enough for identifying NEET youth.
C. It is used effectively for the NEET issue.
D. It can solve the issue of NEET youth.
31. The passage is structured in the following way.
A. Introducing a topic-Describing related studies -Making suggestions
B. Making a claim -Providing evidence-Drawing a conclusion
C. Presenting a problem -Analyzing the causes -Offering solutions
D. Raising a question-Discussing different opinions -Reaching an agreement
D
In today’s digital era, social media users are increasingly coming across fake news online. This leads to the pressing issue: What causes people to fall for misinformation on the Internet
According to researchers at the Penn State College of Information Sciences and Technology, users can easily fall into an echo chamber (回声室) — a sort of virtual space where users consume only one-sided news, eventually distrusting any opposing views. “We all tend to agree with the group opinion. Hence, people naturally get together with others who hold the same opinion,” said Dongwon Lee, one of the researchers. “But if you’re not cautious, there is a high risk of falling into an echo chamber.”
To prevent this phenomenon, the researchers have crafted a novel tool, a game named ChamberBreaker, to help players resist echo chambers and reduce the rate of fake news spread. The fundamental approach employed by ChamberBreaker centers around a decision-making procedure that mirrors the creation of echo chambers. In ChamberBreaker, a player is tasked with trying to have community members fall into an echo chamber. To begin, the player is randomly assigned a situation that focuses on a health, political or environmental issue, and is presented with six pieces of news on that topic. Then, the player selects news that could cause the other members to fall into an echo chamber while at the same time maintaining their trust. If successful, the community members will fall into an echo chamber and the player will witness the resulting negative effects on the community.
After developing ChamberBreaker, researchers tested it with over 800 subjects to see if it raised awareness of echo chambers and changed news consumption behaviors. The researchers found that those who played ChamberBreaker were significantly more likely to state their intention to observe online information from more diverse perspectives and showed an increased awareness of the echo chamber phenomenon.
Ultimately, the researchers hope that their methodology can excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study related to information consumption. The application of tools like ChamberBreaker, which focuses on fostering analytical reasoning, may lead us towards a more informed online community.
32. What can be learned about an online echo chamber
A. It encourages well-judged views.
B. It gathers like-minded individuals.
C. It functions as a virtual reality platform.
D. It serves as a tool for identifying fake information.
33. What is ChamberBreaker’s core method against echo chambers
A. Assignment of situations. B. Trust-building exercises.
C. News selection strategy. D. Community impact assessment.
34. Which of the following can show ChamberBreaker’s effectiveness
A. The results of scientific testing.
B. The theoretical framework of the game.
C. The description of the game procedures.
D. The common challenges faced during gameplay.
35. What is the likely long-term effect of playing ChamberBreaker
A. Reducing news inquiry. B. Encouraging passive reading.
C. Strengthening prejudiced views. D. Enhancing critical thinking.

How to Study More Effectively
No matter whether you are preparing for some specific course, a professional degree, or an entrance exam, it’s important to maximize study time and improve the efficiency of study.
____36____ You can use a calendar, an app, or a pinboard time table to draft a schedule that works best for you. Include the study time, sleep, and the socializing time in the schedule. Make sure you give yourself more time than you think you need, especially if it’s a subject you struggle with.
You can also cut your study time into short sessions. Your most productive studying typically occurs within the first 25 to 30 minutes of hitting books, so try to study in 30 minutes, and take a 5—10 minute break, so that you are able to absorb and consolidate the information. ____37____
Studying isn’t only spending hours and hours on list of what you think will be on an exam or quiz. ____38____ This can be done through a six-step approach: remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating and creating. You should focus on a method that will help you achieve a higher level of learning. The higher levels of learning focus on asking questions such as what if, how and why rather than where, what and who.
____39____ Research shows that being tested is not only useful in evaluating how well you have learned something but also valuable for avoiding future mistakes. Answering questions unsuccessfully can help you understand concepts better. If your professor offers you practice exams, take them home and learn from them. Understand why you got certain questions wrong and others right. ____40____ Force each other to expand answers in order to understand the material better.
Following the suggestions to study more effectively will mean shorter and more efficient study sessions, and eventually, better grades!
A. You can quiz yourself whenever possible.
B. Effective studying starts with the right attitude.
C. It is important to study in a smart way and go the extra mile.
D. Study with friends or classmates and question each other on the material.
E. You are more likely to do well before a quiz when you have time to review.
F. Creating a schedule is the first and most important thing to maximize your study time.
G. This is why a certain balance should be made and studying time should be cut into shorter sessions.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语段续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数为 150 左右。
When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing competition. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to show my writing on the sinking(沉没)of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply, “Because I love your stories. If you're willing to work hard, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠)in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else's choice.
What did the horse think when he ran through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit While writing, I got tired; I had doubts; I even wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going, I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out plenty of books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay(文章)to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

Dear Ben,
I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble fitting in at your new school. Such problems are quite normal. Perhaps the following suggestions may be helpful.
First, I think you may need to communicate with your classmates as much as possible. In this way, you will get to know each other better. Second, it might be a good idea for you to take part in more activities, which usually involve teamwork and interactions with other students and are therefore good for developing friendly relationship. Lastly, faced with some tough problems, you might consider asking your teachers, who can usually offer you some sensible suggestions.
I sincerely hope my advice will be of help to you. If there is anything more I can do to help, please let me know.

第二节
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the competition, there came the news. I won first prize! Hearing the unexpected news, I froze. I could feel the heart pounding in my chest. Did I really make it Never in my life did I expect to take the lead in an English writing contest! A few days later, striding onto the podium of the award presentation with my chest puffing out in pride, I couldn't conceal my smile. After receiving my prize, I nodded to everyone in thanks. Wild cheers and thunderous applause erupted from the audience.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. Seeing my coming, my teacher raised his head, gave me a thumb-up and praised, “Well done!” I could sense a flash of delight in his eyes. Tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes, I couldn't help hugging my teacher tightly, crying, “Without your encouragement and support, I couldn't have won the prize!" "No, you deserve it, for your efforts and perseverance like Revere's fabled horse. Keep it in mind that be brave to pursue your dreams and never give up!" my teacher replied. It was my teacher's words that enabled me to approach my own talent and gain confidence.
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the competition, there came the news. I won the first place. Hearing the news, I stood there, frozen. I couldn't believe my ears. Had I heard right My classmates gave me a look of disbelief at first, and then cheered and clapped happily. When I came to my senses, tears of excitement came to my eyes. At the award presentation, I accepted the award certificate, extremely nervous and excited. At that moment, I couldn’t help thinking of my teacher.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. When presented the award certificate to my teacher, his eyes glistening with tears, he reached out his hands and hugged me tightly. I expressed my sincerest gratitude to the teacher and attributed this small achievement to him. Looking into my eyes, he said, "I'm so proud of you. It's your own hard work that paid off. Believe in yourself and you can write better and better." I nodded determinedly. That was when I fell in love with writing.
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the competition, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so surprised to hear the unexpected news that I couldn’t say a word. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, "It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Thank you very much!”
I went to my leacher's office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said excitedly "Congratulations! You made it! I knew you'd win! I’m am proud of you." "You know I didn't like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works." I said seriously. Since then, I have written many great works. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.
