Tom can cook, and his mum is very happy with him. Tom is like any other teenager. He goes to school, does his homework, meets his friends and enjoys doing sports. But between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm from Monday to Friday, Tom does something different. He cooks dinner for all the family: his mum, dad, younger brother Joe and elder sister Emma.
Tom's mum says, “I think it's important for teenagers to learn how to cook. Maths and English are important, of course, but they need other skills too to help them to survive. First I taught Tom how to cook easy meals like pizza or eggs and chips. Then he started using recipes(食谱) in my cookbooks. Yesterday he made vegetable soup. It was very good!”
Tom says, “I love cooking and I think I'm really good at it. None of my friends cook. I don't know why. It isn't difficult and it's great fun!”
In the past, Tom didn't help out at home, but today his mum is very pleased with him. He also finds his own purpose of life.

Sometimes, families can be hard. They argue a lot. Things get sad. People get upset. Sometimes they stop talking. Our family has had lots of ups and downs. I'd say we're probably one of the most argumentative families out there.
I have an elder brother and an elder sister. I'm the baby boy in the family. We grew up in quite a small house and often didn't have a lot of money. My mum and dad argued, pretty much all the time, just about anything. My brother and sister argued. And I used to argue too.
But as I got older, I always chose to be the mediator(调解人). I would try to look at both sides of the argument and bring them together to make peace. “Dad, you shouldn't have said that to Mum, but Mum, try to see it this way.” “Come on guys, we all love each other. It's just been a bad day.” I'd say to try and calm things down.
I learned much growing up in our family: understanding, patience and the knowledge that sometimes things just don't go your way. We all make mistakes. We all say things that we wish we hadn't. The key is to try and understand. Of course, sometimes, arguments do need to happen. If something is wrong, it needs to be solved and sometimes, we get angry about it. But as long as we can reflect and look at things with an attitude(态度) of care and responsibility, we can weather the storm and help each other out.

When I was small, my mum used to give the family something special for meals. She once put some burnt bread in front of my dad.
