“The mountains are calling and I must go” — the famous quote is from John Muir(1838-1914), who is described as “the wilderness poet” and “the citizen of the universe.” He once jokingly referred to himself as a “poet-geologist-botanist and ornithologist (鸟类学家)-naturalist etc. etc.!” He is known as the Father of American National Parks.
Famed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns recently said, “As we got to know him… he was among the highest individuals in America; I’m talking about the level of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and Thomas Jefferson— people who have had a transformational effect on who we are.”
So where is the quote from Well, John Muir was a productive writer. Whether he was writing poetry or simply letters to his family, John Muir was always putting pen to paper. The quote is from within one of his many letters written to his sister:
September 3rd, 1873 Yosemite Valley Dear sister Sarah, I have just returned from the longest and hardest trip I have ever made in the mountains, having been gone over five weeks. I am weary, but resting fast; sleepy, but sleeping deep and fast; hungry, but eating much. For two weeks I explored the glaciers of the summits east of here, sleeping among the snowy mountains without blankets and with little to eat on account of its being so inaccessible. After my icy experiences, it seems strange to be down here in so warm and flowery a climate. I will soon be off again, determined to use all the season in carrying through my work—will go next to Kings River a hundred miles south, then to Lake Tahoe and surrounding mountains, and in winter work in Oakland with my pen. Though slow, someday I will have the results of my mountain studies in a form in which you all will be able to read and judge them. The mountains are calling and I must go, and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly (永不停息地). I will write again when I return from Kings River Canyon. Farewell, with love everlasting. Yours, John

Researchers at the University of Exeter in England have crafted a device that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to detect Asian wasps (黄蜂). AI refers to the capability of computers to learn from experiences and execute tasks swiftly that would typically require a significant time investment from humans.
Asian wasps are considered an invasive species indicating that they are not native to the UK and can disrupt our ecosystem — the environment and its living organisms. These wasps feed on local insects and pose a significant threat to honey bees with a single wasp capable of killing up to 50 honey bees in a day.
The innovative system, named VespAI, uses a sponge cloth soaked with a liquid that attracts wasps. Once the wasps are drawn in an automatic camera takes pictures of them. The AI then analyzes the photos to determine whether the insect is an Asian wasp or a European wasp, which is a native species.
If an Asian wasp is spotted, a notification is sent right away to the researcher’s phone or computer. VespAI acts as an early-warning system, allowing for the detection of any Asian wasps that may have entered a new area of the UK. Its high precision helps authorities respond quickly to follow the wasps, find their nests, and get rid of them before they can reproduce.
There is growing concern among experts that Asian wasps may have made a lasting home in the UK rather than being merely transient or accidental arrivals. Currently, the UK’s way of dealing with Asian wasps depends on people seeing them, recognizing them, and reporting them. However, many of these reports turn out to be other kinds of insects, which is not a very effective way to handle the situation.
Dr. Thomas O’Shea-Wbeller, who worked on VespAI, said this new system won’t mistake other insects for Asian wasps or miss them when they come around. VespAI has been tested on the island of Jersey and will be tried in other places this year.
5 What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A. VespAI’s design and operation.
B. The effectiveness of wasps traps.
C. VespAI’s influence on ecosystem.
D. Traditional wasp detecting methods.
6. What does the underlined word “transient” mean in paragraph5
A. Widespread. B. Temporary. C. Frequent. D. Dangerous.
7. Which statement Would Dr. Thomas probably agree with
A. VespAI will help manage wasp invasions.
B. VespAI requires constant human inspection.
C. The current reporting system is highly effective.
D. The current methods fail to identify Asian wasps.
8. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. AI Disrupts the Survival of Insects
B. The Threat of Asian Wasps to Bees
C. AI Technology Boosts Wasp Detection
D. The Impact of Al on Insect Identification
C
In recent years, much of my life as a consumer has shifted to what I like to call background spending. As I’ve subscribed (订阅) to more apps and streaming platforms, significant sums of my money tend to slip away each month without my ever thinking about it.
Think of it as an automated trade. Spending without the trouble of spending. Acquisition (获得) without action or thought.
But while this flood of subscriptions was sold to me on the condition that it would make my life more trouble-free, there was a certain shock I felt upon discovering how much I was spending without realizing each month ($179.45).
You see, the thing about background spending is that it tends to happen, well, in the background without your full attention. And there lies the point.
“Hand over your credit card details and let us take care of the rest,” these companies promote. But by agreeing to this trade, we’ve become lazy, passive consumers. And this laziness contributes to more laziness because most of us can’t be bothered with conducting regular reviews of our subscription spending. We’re too lazy to even notice or cancel it!
I know it’s not just me who is suddenly living life as a smooth-brained subscriber. The average consumer spends $273 per month on subscriptions, according to a 2021 study of 2,500 by digital services firm West Morose. Not a single person surveyed knew what his actually monthly spending was.
It’s understandable why this model is so attractive to businesses. As companies questioned traditional advertising models, subscription offered the promise of “selling once and earning forever.” And while subscription services have been around for decades (think Wine of the Month Club), more customers have been willing to sign up thanks to the widespread availability of smartphones and the increasing ease of home delivery.
While these subscription promise ease and happiness, not all of us are satisfied. Last year, the Kearney Consumer Institute found 40 percent of consumers believe they have too many subscribes. Almost half of us also think we pay too much for streaming video-on-demand subscriptions, in particular, while about a third intend to reduce the number of such subscriptions, an April report from Deloitte Insights.
9. What can we know about background spending in paragraph 2
A. Its feature. B. Its purpose.
C. Its procedure. D. Its requirement.
10. What makes it possible for background spending to happen
A. Its attractive price. B. Some people’s poor habit.
C. Its secure service. D. Some people’s addiction to it.
11. Why is the subscription model appealing to businesses
A. It offers good home delivery services.
B. It is like traditional advertising models.
C. It is popular among smartphone producers.
D. It brings repeated profits through a single sale.
12. What’s the author’s attitude towards background spending
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Unclear.

Asian wasps are considered an invasive species. indicating that they are not native to the UK and can disrupt our ecosystem — the environment and its living organisms.
5. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A. VespAI’s design and operation.
B. The effectiveness of wasps traps.

D. Traditional wasp detecting methods.
6. What does the underlined word “transient” mean in paragraph5

A. VespAI will help manage wasp invasions.

C. The current reporting system is highly effective.
D. The current methods fail to identify Asian wasps.
8. What can be a suitable title for the text

But while this flood of subscriptions was sold to me on the condition that it would make my life more trouble-free there was a certain shock I felt upon discovering how much I was spending without realizing each month ($179.45).
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Unclear.
【答案】9. A 10. B 11. D 12. C
