The mysterious science of reading gestures is explained using practical explanations and clear images. Gestures are products of both genetic (遗传的) and environmental influences. Understanding our gestures is not as difficult as some people would have you believe. All human beings use them and so actually have a “built-in” ability to recognise and read it.
Fingers crossed
Generally this means “wishing for good luck or fortune”.
Another explanation could be seen as “here’s hoping”. The gesture probably has Christian origins where the gesture was believed to get away from evil. As such, people believe that crossing the fingers when telling a lie somehow gets away from the evil of the lie. Some historians believe that crossing your fingers is a hidden or secret way of making the Christian sign of the cross a perfect way of defeating evils. As a gesture it has both good and bad meanings. Luck or lies.
Waving the first finger
Mothers and teachers are common users with this hand gesture. In general, it is used to warn a single person. It is a change of the “you” gesture. If translated into language it would say “Stop whatever you are doing and pay attention to me. I am your superior and I am warning you!” Classed as a “silent” parent to child gesture, it is not completely allowed in an formal occasion where it will be explained as rude. Some psychologists believe that it has a meaning of the whip.
1. What can we infer from the first paragraph
A. Reading gestures is secret. B. Gestures are formed in daily life.
C. Some people make reading gestures difficult on purpose. D. It is hard to explain gestures by images.
2. If a Christian crosses his fingers, he wants to .
A. show he isn’t lucky B. wish to succeed
C. gets away from the evil of the lie D. cross the street
3. If your mum waves her first finger, she wants to .
A. wish for good luck B. stop you
C. praise you D. help you

Work starts early on White Gate Farm in East Lyme, Connecticut. By 7 a. m., farm manager Dan Wood was at the East Lyme Post Office dropping off a box of fresh produce that later in the day would be delivered by mail to Chelsea Gubbins, who lives across town.
White Gate Farm is a member of Farmers Post, a pilot programme that enables smallholder farms across eastern Connecticut to ship fresh produce and other farm products to local households through the United States Postal Service (USPS). Farmers Post takes advantage of a USPS programme called Connect Local that allows small businesses to offer same-day and next-day delivery at a fixed low cost.
Food remains in the fields because either market prices are too low or the cost of the workforce is too high, or because the size and shape of the produce make it unattractive to stores. Each year, around 10 million tons of crops never get harvested, causing about 16% of total US food loss and waste.
“Food that is wasted has a much larger influence than just the loss of the food itself,” says Julia Kurnik, senior director of Innovation Start-ups at WWF. “Everything that went into growing it goes out the window as well—the water, the land, and the energy. And as the food breaks down, it produces greenhouse gases. The bad effects amplify greatly.”
Besides reducing food waste, selling farm products directly to local customers cuts down on the cross-country shipping of food grown in California or elsewhere. This reduces the so-called food miles that researchers believe cause about 6% of the world’s greenhouse gases. Fruits and vegetables, which are often transported out of season and require refrigeration, produce lots of greenhouse gases between farms and people’s plates.
Wood understands that Farmers Post can help to end that waste. “Farming is kind of like cooking for a big group.” he says. “This is helping us get right on the money, using almost 100% of what we grow and harvest.”
8. Why was Farmers Post started
A. To provide professional modern farming methods.
B. To create more delivery jobs for local people
C. To pick up and carry customers to different farms.
D. To make the delivery of produce easier and cheaper.
9. What may cause some US crops to remain unharvested according to the text
A. The limited need for farm products. B. The shortage of workers and harvesting tool.
C. Their low value and poor quality. D. Bad weather and road conditions.
10. What does the underlined word “amplify” mean in Paragraph 4
A. Increase. B. Slow. C. Switch. D. Weaken.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Food Safety Movement Has Met Some Challenges
B. A Farm-to-Table Programme Helps Reduce Food Waste
C. Farmers Post Explores Ways to Make High-Quality Products
D. Small Farms Play a Leading Role in Serving Communities
D
On September 9, 2024, Apple released its latest iPhone 16 series at an event called “It’s Glowtime”. At the event, Tim Cook, the company’s CEO, played up the promise of the phones’ AI features in a pre-recorded video.
Indeed, the demonstration seemed impressive. When Cook pointed the camera at a restaurant, the AI assistant Siri could tell him what was on the menu. It also could answer his questions fairly well and learn about the users from their interactions with their devices. For instance, Siri could know if a user’s mother was calling and acted appropriately.
Apple is one of many firms that want to take AI beyond huge data centres, known as the cloud, and run it on smaller devices, known as the edge. Samsung, Apple’s major competitor, launched its Galaxy S24 with some AI features earlier this year. So did Microsoft, which has launched Windows PCs designed for AI. But their efforts have shown that it is not easy to shift cloud-based AI models to the edge devices.
At present, cloud-based AI models are mostly trained on graphics processing units (GPUs) that consume so much energy that it can take a nuclear-power plant to fuel them. They also need huge amounts of memory and data. All these can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Even once they are trained, running these AI models is costly. According to one estimate, it costs OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, 36 cents every time someone asks its AI model a question.
Companies are experimenting with various solutions to these problems. Apple will offer on-device AI to deal with the easiest tasks, but send trickier problems to the firm’s private cloud. The service will direct the most difficult requests to third-party models such as ChatGPT. But even such smaller on-device AI models require a lot of computing power to run, which puts huge stress on the edge devices’ batteries.
“Making the technology work could not only start a supercycle in device sales, but also create new opportunities for apps and digital advertising,” says Neil Shah of Counterpoint, a research firm. “But for the moment, edge devices are barely ready for basic functions, let alone Glowtime.”
12. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The Glowtime event. B. iPhone 16’s AI features.
C. Tim Cook’s performance. D. The future of AI phones.
13. Why are Samsung and Microsoft mentioned in the text
A. To tell readers how bad competition can be.
B. To warn Apple of the potential consequences.
C. To compare their newly released edge devices.
D. To show how hard it is to apply AI to edge devices.
14. What is the problem with cloud-based AI models
A. OpenAI charges too much money.
B. All of them have to be trained on GPUs.
C. It is too expensive to train and run them.
D. They can only deal with the easiest tasks.
15. What does Neil Shah most probably imply
A. iPhone 16 is bound to disappoint its users.
B AI phones’ success will depend on new apps.
C. Sales of AI phones will increase greatly soon.
D. Tim Cook was not honest with the AI features.

B. AI phones’ success will depend on new apps.
C. Sales of AI phones will increase greatly soon.
D. Tim Cook was not honest with the AI features.

In addition, I am moved by her spirit that she never gave up despite limited resources and bad air quality. Last but not least, even though Tu Youyou is internationally renowned, she is not interested in fame and prefers to continue her research attentively.
All in all, Tu Youyou is so remarkable that she is selected as one of the most influential figures of science of 20th century. It is her sincerity and bravery that inspire me to go ahead, and she deserves my admiration.
