You might want to spend your time in high school pursuing academic projects. While we highly recommend that exploring internship (实习) opportunities can be a powerful way for you to develop real-world skills. Now, let’s dive into a comprehensive review of Ladder internships.
What is Ladder Internships
Ladder Internships is a selective programme for high school students to work with startups. As part of their internship, each student will work on a real-world project and present their work at the end of their internship.
Who can participate in Ladder Internships
The programme is open to high school students, undergraduates and gap year students! However, you must make sure that you can commit from 10-15 hours every week for 8 weeks.
What can you expect as a Ladder intern
The programme starts with your placement decision. Ladder works closely with companies to pre-determine bite-sized projects that are of genuine use to the companies. If you are interested in working in a specific area and convey it in the application form, chances are that you’ll get paired with a company that reflects these interests!
Regular meetings and discussion about deliverables: Throughout the 8-week internship, you will have a 45-minute meeting with your intern manager weekly. You will also discuss weekly deadlines and progress goals.
Consult your coach in the company, who will give you feedback on your work. At the Week 4 mark, you can show your first deliverable to the company, and at Week 8, you will present your final project to the company!
What is the cost of the programme
The 8-week programme costs $1,990. If the cost is a barrier, you can consider applying for financial aid.

A. 8 hours. B. 15 hours. C. 80 hours. D. 120 hours.
2. What will an intern do in the programme

This summer, I marked what some call a “milestone birthday”. My approach to birthdays is usually twofold: fear them in advance and bear them in the moment. But this year, I decided to confront my birthday directly instead of tolerating it awkwardly. Rather than wait to receive cards and gifts, why not celebrate my birthday by giving presents to others Maybe turning tradition upside down would assuage my discomfort.
Science was on my side. Studies have found that spending money on others makes us happier than spending money on ourselves. “We observe this all over the world, even in places where people are struggling to meet their own basic needs. Charitable contributions activate the reward centres of our brain that spark for delights such as music and food,” Elizabeth Dunn, a University of British Columbia psychology professor told me.
Armed with these studies, I began planning my experiment. The gift had to be small enough to mail in an envelope and meaningful enough to touch hearts. I decided on pencils. I located a vendor (商贩) in Central California who could customize pencils. I ordered them in pink to honour my last name. And I engraved (雕刻) them with three messages about pencils that double as messages about life: Stay sharp. Get to the point. Erasing is creating.
With my wife, I turned our kitchen table into a fulfillment centre. We printed labels, slid three pencils into a sleeve and each sleeve into an envelope. Then, in two walks to our neighbourhood post office, we sent 98 gifts out to the world.
A few days later, I got texts and emails from the pencil recipients (收件者). I heard from about three-fourths of them that they like the gift. Several people sent photos of their new pink pencils along with thanks or birthday wishes. A few told me how touched they were that I thought of them. One person texted fire and heart emojis.
This exercise deepened my sense of gratitude and connection. For a few moments, I forgot I was turning okay, I’ll say the number now, 60.
4. What does the underlined word “assuage” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Ease. B. Cause. C. Hide. D. Express.
5. What can we learn from Elizabeth Dunn’s words in Paragraph 2
A. People worldwide observe birthdays. B. Giving offers people more pleasure.
C. Material wealth generates charity. D. People in need are more likely to donate.
6. Why did the author tailor the pencils pink
A. To entertain children. B. To make them striking.
C. To highlight the messages on them. D. To bear a mark of himself.
7. What’s Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. How the pencils were packed and sent. B. How the author’s birthday was celebrated.
C. How people responded to the author’s gift. D. How the author reflected on the experience.

Britain’s only remaining coal power plant will generate electricity for the last time today, after operating for 57 years.
The power station at Ratcliffe in Nottingham shire will come to the end of its life in line with the government’s policy to phase out coal power, which was first signalled almost a decade ago.
The closure marks the end of Britain’s 142-year history of coal power use, which began when the world’s first coal-fired power station, the Holborn Viaduct in central London, began generating electricity in 1882. The closure has been regarded as a big milestone in reducing the UK’s carbon emissions.
The UK became the first country to set an end-date for coal power from 2025 after putting in place increasingly strict regulations to reduce the running hours of coal plants. Ministers called for the deadline to come forward by a year shortly before the UK hosted the UN’s Cop26 climate talks in Glasgow in late 2021.
Peter O’Grady, the plant manager, said, “This whole year has been a series of sad moments. I’m sure there will be a few tears as the whole thing stops and as people leave, especially for me.”
The plant once employed 3,000 engineers but its workforce has declined in line with its power output over recent years. Coal power made up 80% of the UK’s electricity in the early1980s, and 40% in 2014, which was due to costly carbon taxes and the rise of cheap renewables.
Staff were first told in 2021 that the plant would close in late 2022, but Ratcliffe’s owner, the German energy company Uniper, reached an agreement with the government to keep the plant running during the Europe-wide gas crisis. Uniper has tried to help engineers into jobs at the company’s other power plants or into training that could lead to work in other areas of the energy industry.
Michael Lewis, Uniper’s chief executive, said, “This will be the first time since 1882 that coal has not powered Great Britain. We’re embracing (拥抱) the future of cleaner and flexible energy.”
8. Why is the coal power plant in the UK put to an end
A. To respond to the call of the government.
B. To turn around the situation of losing money.
C. To follow the trend started by other countries.
D. To stimulate other industries to cut carbon emissions.
9. How does Peter O’Grady feel about the closure of the coal power plant
A. Scared. B. Upset. C. Surprised. D. Pleased.
10. What might have caused the decreased use of coal power in the UK ten years ago
A. The decline of workforce. B. The reduction of coal tax.
C. The development of new energies. D. The conservation of non-renewable resources.
11. What will happen to the engineers of the coal power plant in the UK
A. They will be dismissed. B. They may work in other industries.
C. They will go abroad in search of jobs. D. They may receive considerate arrangements.
D
Hearing a song might bring to mind the last time we saw a live band perform it. We may remember hearing the song on a road trip with high school friends, and be brought back to the sights, smells, and feelings of that experience. All of these experiences have been referred to as “music-evoked (引起) thoughts”, and recent research has sought to understand why certain thoughts occur in response to certain music.
In one study, my workmates and I compared thoughts evoked by instrumental excerpts (节选) of unfamiliar classical, electronic, and pop/rock music. Overall, listeners reported thoughts 76 percent of the time. However, the occurrence of thoughts varied across music types. Classical and electronic music evoked more thoughts than pop/rock music. This doesn’t necessarily mean pop/rock music types are unengaging. Rather, types like classical and electronic music might provide greater visual mental imagery, whereas pop/rock music might invite listeners to engage in different ways, like dancing or singing along.
We also found links related to the contexts with which we associate music. Electronic music tended to evoke thoughts about clubbing and video games, pop/rock music evoked thoughts about live performances and driving, and classical music thoughts about movies and weddings. Classical music led listeners to great capability to imagine fictional stories, as it was often composed specifically with the aim of evoking an imagined story.
These contextual associations may vary across different cultures. A recent study revealed that fictional stories reported while enjoying classical music were highly similar in two groups of young adults in the US, but the stories generated by listeners in Germany in response to these same excerpts were significantly different. This suggests that even when asked to generate entirely fictional stories, listeners are influenced by their prior associations with music. This speaks to general theories that our memories play a substantial role in shaping imagination.
Understanding how different music evokes different thoughts is important for various practical uses. For instance, a doctor might aim to trigger (触发) specific types of thoughts via music when working with a client, or an artist might engage a more creative thinking mode by listening to a particular piece of music.
12. What can we learn about “music-evoked thoughts” from Paragraph 2
A. They vary with different types of music. B. They are few occurrences in music listening.
C. They involve people in dancing to the music. D. They strike people during engaging music play.
13. What is unique about classical music
A. It was associated with clubbing. B. It provided listeners with real contexts.
C. It was intended to stimulate imagination. D. It was played more slowly than other music types.
14. What greatly influenced listeners’ imagination
A. The development level of their country. B. The previous music-related experiences.
C. The education they received while young. D. The types of story they were asked to create.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Where Does Our Memory Come from
B. Do Music Imaginings Vary with Cultures
C. Does Listening to Music Help Story Creation
D. How Does Different Music Shape Our Imagined Thoughts

It was a normal school day. Jefferson County Public School bus driver Larry Farrish Jr. was travelling on his usual route picking up students and send them to nine different schools of the district.
But when he stopped to collect first-grader Levi Carrier, he noticed that something was wrong. Because every morning, when he pulled up to the 125th street bus stop, Levi would wave to him with a broad smile on his face and greet him with “Good morning, sir”. That morning, Larry noticed a sad look on Levi’s tear-stained face. Larry asked Levi what was wrong when Levi stepped on the bus. Levi looked up at Larry, face full of tears again and told Larry that he didn’t have any pajamas (睡衣) on the Annual Pajamas’ Day of his school. Larry immediately made sense of the situation. Obviously, the pajama meant a lot to the boy.
Larry comforted Levi, asked him to take a seat and promised Levi he would figure it out. Larry knew that the community Levi lived in was a low-income one. People there often couldn’t make ends meet and didn’t have basic living conveniences, such as a washer, dryer hookup or sufficient rooms for the kids. It was not hard to imagine Levi’s situation. All the kids of Levi’s school on the bus were in pajamas of different colours and patterns, talking and laughing all the way except Levi, who was looking down at the bus floor, his hands clutching (紧握) his corner of his worn jacket.
After about half an hour, Larry finished his assigned route and dropped all the students off at their respective schools. He sat in his seat for a while, his mind racing for ideas. A few minutes later, his brow (眉毛) relaxed. He called the bus monitor.

You might want to spend your time in high school pursuing academic projects. While we highly recommend that, exploring internship (实习) opportunities can be a powerful way for you to develop real-world skills.
1. What’s the minimum time for an intern to invest in the programme
A. 8 hours. B. 15 hours. C. 80 hours. D. 120 hours.

A Scared. B. Upset. C. Surprised. D. Pleased.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11.

He said he had something urgent to deal with. Larry went to a local Family Dollar shop and chose a set of nice pajamas. When Larry arrived back at school, he asked one of the school staff to call Levi down to the hall. The moment Levi saw Larry with a set of pajamas in his hand, he approached Larry with a confused look on his face. “Are these pajamas for me ” Levi asked with half disbelief and half excitement in his voice. After hearing the word “Yes”, Levi’s face lit up. It was the biggest smile that Larry recognised every morning. The receptionist snapped a picture of the touching scene.
The picture of the two was posted on the Internet. And it soon went viral. People were touched by Larry’s kindness and generosity and made positive comments under the post. When Larry was asked by the local media why he took the trouble to help Levi, he said he never wanted to see his little passengers hurt because of something so small and that he was happy that he could help. After knowing the kind gesture, Levi’s mother shed tears of gratitude and said she would pay it forward. Just as the saying goes, small acts of kindness make a huge difference.
