While parents and educators worry that children have been doing too little exercise, a sixth grade class from the Chaoyang School of the High School in Beijing finished their 100th 5-kilometer morning jogging program on Saturday to celebrate their upcoming graduation.
The program, initiated in September 2021 by the class’s parent association, aims to improve students’ physical fitness, perseverance, and endurance. Despite it being difficult at first, students have consistently participated for three years.
To enhance their physical fitness, the program is organized every Saturday morning with the guidance of a parent who is selected to be the coach. This practice has not only improved the students’ physical health but also promoted a sense of teamwork among them.
National surveys have shown a rapid increase of obesity among children and adolescents (青少年) across the country. Besides weight problems, lack of exercise also leads to the prevalence of myopia (近视) at school.

The MeowTalk app, an innovative tool developed by computer scientists Sergei Dreizin and Mark Boyes at Akvelon, aims to bridge the communication gap between cats and their owners. Launched in November 2020, this app has gained significant popularity, with over 20 million downloads and the analysis of over a billion meows to enhance its accuracy.
MeowTalk records and translates cat meows into phrases like “I’m annoyed” or “Feed me!”, providing owners with a better understanding of their pets’ needs and emotions. This technology is part of a growing trend in pet communication tools, including FluentPet, which teaches pets to press buttons to express their needs.
However, cat behaviorist Charlotte de Mouzon expresses doubt about the effectiveness of such tools. She believes that while they may enhance communication, they should not replace the necessary bond between cats and their owners. Instead, she stresses the importance of careful observation and understanding of cats’ body language and smell signaling.
Indeed, cats use various methods to communicate, with adult cats usually meowing only to humans as a means of clear communication. While MeowTalk can classify nine phrases with 90% correctness, experts stress that artificial intelligence is not totally dependable. Therefore, paying attention to a cat’s sound and body language remains key for effective communication.
Finally, understanding cat meows is a co-learning process filled with both discoveries and misunderstandings. Tools like MeowTalk can aid in this journey, but the key lies in promoting a strong, attentive relationship between cats and their owners.
28. What is the main purpose of the MeowTalk app
A. Predict future behaviors of cats.
B. Manage the health situation of cat.
C. Train cats to communicate by pressing buttons.
D. Translate cat meows into human-understandable words.
29. How many times has the MeowTalk app been downloaded since its launch
A. Over 1 million times. B. Over 10 million times.
C. Over 20 million times. D. Over 50 million times.
30. According to the article, what technology does the MeowTalk app use to analyze cat meows
A. Artificial intelligence. B. Machine learning.
C. Data collecting. D. Natural language processing.
31. What is Charlotte de Mouzon’s attitude towards the MeowTalk app
A. Fully supportive. B. Questionable. C. Disapproving D. Unconcerned.
D
Blue Planet II’s latest episode (情节) focuses on how plastic is having a terrible effect on the ocean and slowly killing our sea creatures. Indeed, oceans are drowning in plastic.
Though it seems that the world couldn’t possibly function without plastics. The first plastic bags were introduced in the 1950s, the same decade that plastic packaging began gaining popularity in the United States. This growth has happened so fast that science is still catching up with the change.
We put all these plastics into the environment, but we still don’t really know what the results are going to be. What we do know, though, is disturbing. Ocean plastic is killing millions of marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. Ninety percent of seabirds are now eating plastics on a regular basis. By 2050, that figure is expected to rise to 100 percent.
And it’s not just wildlife that is dangerous because of the plastics in our seas. Humans are consuming plastics through the seafood we eat. That’s the reason why some people see ocean plastic as a disaster. To do something about it we don’t have to remake our planet energy system.
This is not a problem where we don’t know what the solution is. We know how to pick up garbage. Anyone can do it. We know how to deal with it. We know how to recycle. We can all start by thinking twice before we use single-use plastic products. Things that may seem ordinary, like using a reusable bottle or a reusable bag-when taken collectively, these choices really do make a difference.
32. How does the author describe the situation of ocean plastic
A. It is getting better. B. It is under control.
C. It is getting worse. D. Too serious to be resolved.
33. How did the author support his opinion in Paragraph 3
A. By using words from experts. B. By making comparison.
C. By asking questions D. By listing real numbers.
34. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Ocean plastic is a global problem. B. The oceans become affected with plastic.
C. Blue Planet II has left viewers heartbroken. D. Plastics gain in popularity all over the world.
35. What does the author suggest we can do to help reduce plastic pollution
A. Use more single-use plastics and burn them. B. Depend on technology to solve the problem.
C. Recycle and make wise choices about plastic use. D. Adapt to the problem and hope it solves itself.

Dear Steve,
How is everything recently I’m writing to tell you my lifestyle in the new school.
Our school is very beautiful with a big playground. There are green trees and all kinds of sweet flowers all the year round. The teachers are very strict with us in study, but after class, they are friendly and care about us very much. My new classmates are all very excellent and always work very hard. They help me a lot with my lessons as well as many things in my daily life and we get along quite well with each other.
Though the school life is stressful, I am full of confidence. I think with the help of the teachers, I will make great progress.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
