My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I tried incredibly hard to focus on the words that I spent hours putting down on paper. I tried to conquer my fear of speaking in public on numerous occasions throughout my life. During college and at my first few jobs, I would get ridiculously nervous when I had to give a presentation or lead a meeting. Public speaking had been my nemesis for as long as I could remember.
Then in my mid-thirties, I decided to join the public speaking group Toastmasters. At every meeting, we were rated and forced to compete with other speakers for an award. You would think that I would walk away from these experiences as a polished speaker, but nothing seemed to work.
It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutions were being attacked for unfair reasons during the pandemic, that I decided I must speak out. Science has made this country a place where dreams come true — this is why we all need to protect science. In addition, as a science writer, I try to get readers to understand how science is related to their daily lives.
So I ended up on that frightening stage on that sunny Saturday in April — Earth Day. Despite the body shakes and fear, I persevered. That day, I looked out into the crowd of like-minded science supporters and I felt comfort.
Reaching that milestone goal of getting through a speech truly changed me. At almost forty, I learned that passion can set off a flame in my heart to do things I never dreamed possible. The darkness that led to my speech is sure to lead to new opportunities and adventures.
4. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “nemesis” in Para.1
A. Advantage B. Annoyance C. Preference. D. Strength.
5. How did the author behave about public speaking after leaving Toastmasters
A. He began to feel less worried. B. He became a polished speaker.
C. He remained a shy speaker. D. Things became worse for him.
6. What made the author want to speak out on Earth Day
A. It was a good chance to learn science.
B. He must rise up to defend his profession.
C. It was a project organized by Toastmasters.
D. He couldn’t have people attacking science.
7. What lesson did the author draw from his successful speech
A. Passion can motive us to achieve the unachievable.
B. No difficulty can be overcome with great effort.
C. Science can lead us to make wonderful changes.
D. Frustration can be stepping stones to success.

Have you ever wondered how your favorite NBA team received its famous name All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names reflected the city’s culture or history, others came from previous owners and many were selected through “Name the Team” contests.
For teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz, the names were not always a reflection of the city. Even though Los Angeles has no lakes, the Lakers name has been a city treasure for almost 40 years. Before going to Los Angeles, the team originated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1947, team officials changed the name to the Lakers to reflect the Minnesota State’s nickname, “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. The team name went unchanged after moving to Los Angeles in 1960.
Because the Utah’s team originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was called the Jazz. In 1974, New Orleans club officials chose the name to represent the city for its reputation as the “Jazz Capital of the World”. The name stayed with the team even after they found a new home in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.
The original owner of the Chicago Bulls, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is relentless and never quits. Klein, who founded the club in 1966, believed these qualities were necessary for a championship team and hoped his Chicago athletes would live up to the team name. The Bulls, the winner of the six NBA championships, has definitely followed the belief.
In 1967, the Indiana Pacers selected their team name in a different way from most other teams. Their decision was based on what they wanted to achieve in the NBA. Team officials chose the Pacers name because the organization wanted to set the “pace” in professional basketball.
8. Why is the Los Angeles’ team named “the Lakers”
A. The name was selected from a “Name the Team” contest.
B. The name shows that Los Angeles is a city with various lakes.
C. It was named after a city treasure, which had a long history.
D. The team got this name in another state, which had a lot of lakes.
9. Which of the following refers to the “Jazz Capital of the World”
A. New Orleans. B. Salt Lake City.
C. Los Angeles. D. Minneapolis.
10. Which team was named in a unique way compared to others
A. The Chicago Bulls. B. The Indiana Pacers.
C. The Jazz. D. The Los Angeles Lakers.
11. Why did Richard Klein name the Chicago’s team the Bulls
A. He had guessed the success of the team.
B. People in Chicago used to like watching bullfighting.
C. He wished the team to have the qualities of fighting bulls.
D. Chicago was then a city famous for fighting bulls.
D
Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest—at area about the size of Iceland — because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world’s forests could disappear in 100 to 200 years. To handle it, now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials sin a lab. This makes it possible to “grow” a wooden product without cutting down trees.
In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones (激素). By adjusting the bormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells: New the researchers use a 3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities.
They found that lower bormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials softer or more rigid, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What’s more, it’s to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity!
Research of this kind is ground-breaking. “This work demonstrates the great power of a technology,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstab. “The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, rigidity, and forms. It enables us to grow’ any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can’t achieve.”
12. Why do researchers at MIT perform the research
A. To grow more trees. B. To reduce tree losses.
C. To protect plant diversity. D. To predict forest disappearance.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the lab research
A. Its scientific origins. B. Its theoretical basis
C. Its usual difficulties. D. Its main processes
14. What does the finding suggest about the plant materials
A. They are better than naturally grown plants.
B. Their growth speed determines their characteristics.
C. The hormone levels affect their rigidity.
D. Their cells’ shapes mainly rely on their density.
15. Why is the research path-breaking according to Berenstain
A. It uses new biological materials in lab experiments.
B. It has a significant impact on worldwide plant growth.
C. It revolutionizes the way to make wooden products.
D. It challenges traditional scientific theories in forestry.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Wherever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her deskmate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”. Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn't really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling (蜷缩) in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What's the matter with it ” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens would act. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking(啄) it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead.
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she held the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in its bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It's looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It's fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and...” Everyone was entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】
Then Catherine spotted Landy sitting by herself in a corner. She kept her head down with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. It hit Catherine that the pecking order worked in school, too. Landy was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It’s time for me to make an apology to Landy.” Catherine thought to herself. No sooner had she made up her mind than she announced it to the cool kids surrounding her. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long spaghetti Are you crazy ”
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, regardless of what they said. “Hi, Landy. I’m sorry about the spaghetti thing.” Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening. “I know it hurts you. Can you forgive us ” She figured Landy might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Catherine wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Landy. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Landy, and Catherine also gained an important life lesson that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.
