Wearing a red nose for a day may seem like a strange way to raise money for charity. However,it seems to work in Britain.
Red Nose Day (RND) is a well-known event in the UK.The aim of the day is to raise money for Comic Relief organization. This is a charity that helps people in need in Africa and in the ic Relief was started in 1985 by Richard Curtis. He wrote the famous films Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill.Richard started Comic Relief in answer to the serious starvation in Ethiopia. It’s called Red Nose Day as on this day many people buy a plastic red nose to wear! The money made from selling red noses goes to the charity.

It is a well-accepted assumption that students come to colleges to get good grades and that they are usually too busy to do anything else.
But Connie Snyder Mick,an academic director of the Center for Social Concerns at the University of Notre Dame, says it is just half of the truth. There are many volunteering centers like hers at the colleges and universities in the United States.Mick says these centers help students seek an experience that may not be directly related to a student’s academic progress, but that is still important.
Volunteering is not uncommon in higher education. Many college groups organize volunteer events for different causes.Officials in charge of student housing often organize such events to help build a sense of community.Participation in these kinds of activities is good for students,Mick says. For example, the busy nature of college life can create a lot of stress for students.Doing something completely unrelated to a student’s studies can help calm them by putting their mind on other things.
For a more meaningful addition to their college experience,Mick urges students to visit centers like the one she heads. She says these centers exist to create volunteer opportunities that are more complex and meaningful than just a day spent cleaning a local park or raising money, for example.
Such volunteering centers often partner with local organizations that serve the people of the nearby communities.Even for students with little interest in building a connection with the local communities, there is still value in what volunteer centers have to offer,Mick says. She notes some opportunities can push students to use what they are learning in the classroom out in the real world and having that kind of experience can make a student appealing to employers in the years to come.

7.How can these centers’ activities benefit the students according to Mick
A.By helping them focus on their study.

C.By protecting them from the local communities.
D.By increasing their competitiveness in the job market.

Each year,as many as one billion birds are killed in the US from collisions(相撞) with glass windows and buildings every year.Birds that crashed into Philadelphia buildings began to be collected in the 1890s.Nearly 100 species of birds are known to have died out from crashes with buildings and other structures in Philadelphia. Many other species are probably affected in the city.
Called Lights Out Philly, the voluntary program in Philadelphia encourages buildings to turn out or dim unnecessary external and internal lights between midnight and six o’clock early in the morning to protect birds as they pass through during migration seasons.
Bird migration seasons are from April 1 to May 31 in spring and from August 15 to November 15 in fall. Each year, millions of birds pass through Philadelphia along a migration route known as the Atlantic Flyway.Bird-glass crashes are very common for migrating birds, most of which travel at night.Glass is difficult for them to recognize as hard surfaces, and artificial light can fool them into crashing with buildings and outdoor structures.Turning off lights between midnight and sunrise helps minimize the effect of artificial light when most birds are migrating.
On Oct.2,2020,a stormy and foggy day,Philadelphia had its largest mass collision event in more than 70 years with an estimated 1,000 birds crashing with buildings in one 3.5-square block area in just one day.Paired with a terrible storm of weather and fog conditions, the bright city and building lights attracted and confused the migrating birds, causing them to crash with buildings and outdoor structures.
Even if you don’t play a part in managing the lights of a big building, you can help birds avoid crashes by making the glass opaque to reduce the amount and intensity of artificial light at night, changing the color of lighting to blue or green, shortening the duration lights are on,directing the lighting downward or screening lighting.

Their shared experience got Mahoney thinking. How many other seniors might benefit from dedicated attention She came up with a plan:find local seniors with long-time dreams and work to fulfill their wishes. She named the new charity:We Are Young,or WAY for short.
Seniors can nominate(提名) themselves or be nominated by someone else;wishes are then assessed by a community committee that looks at factors such as age-related physical barriers, social isolation and financial need.
Melanie nominated her husband,78-year-old Victor,to go rockhounding,a hobby he’d given up when it became too physically difficult to access the bay where he hunted for geodes(晶洞).The team at WAY hired a boat for him and his son so they could reach the bay and search out geodes on the beach.“Now,Victor has regained his self-confidence and is willing to take on new challenges. We want to show that anything is possible with the support of others,” says Mahoney.
Up to now,WAY has delivered on 41 dreams, ranging from a helicopter trip over a childhood blueberry-picking spot to travelling to Toronto to watch a Blue Jays game. While her charity operates only in Nova Scotia,Mahoney has her own dream. Each WAY wish is recorded on video, and she wants people watching to be inspired to fulfill a wish for a senior in their own community.“We want to create a national movement that shifts how we as a society view, value and support seniors,” says Mahoney.“That is the impact we’re trying to create.”
