At 12, Becky Schroeder, from America, got a patent (专利) for her idea of the glow-paper, becoming the youngest girl to ever receive a patent in the United States.
Two years earlier, the idea had come to Schroeder when she did her homework in the family car. It was getting dark, and she couldn’t see her notebook well. She didn’t have a flashlight and imagined how nice it would be to have a piece of paper that glows (发光) in the dark.
Most kids will stop at imagining, but Schroeder took it a step further. She researched how fireflies (萤火虫) light up and finally remembered seeing “glow in the dark” toys, such as balls and Frisbees. She then found out they all used phosphorescent paint (磷光涂料), which stores energy when the light shines on it and then gives out light in the dark.
The next day, she shopped with her father for some phosphorescent paint. In the darkest room in her house, she spent the evening experimenting (进行实验) with the paint and some paper, until she got it.
Schroeder’s invention includes a board, which is coated with phosphorescent paint. Once a piece of paper is placed on it, it glows and you can write or read without the need of a flashlight.

Elephant seals (象海豹) are heavy animals. But they are also excellent divers (潜水者). Their natural enemies are near the water surface, so for safety, elephant seals usually dive deep underwater for food.
“We’ve studied elephant seals since the 1960s. They usually dive for about 30 minutes, and then come up for air for just a couple of minutes before diving again,” said an elephant seal researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC).
Since elephant seals are almost diving nonstop, many people began to be interested in the question — do they sleep while diving
The UCSC scientists did research on this. They invented special caps and put them on 13 young elephant seals to record their brain activities at sea. The caps collected information like how they were moving too. Besides, the scientists also studied earlier research records about elephant seals. Finally, they got the answer.
Yes. Elephant seals take a short sleep while diving, for about 10 minutes during a 30-minute underwater trip. Scientists discovered that elephant seals sleep for around 2 hours a day in the sea. And when they’re in deep sleep, they lose control of their body — just dropping down like a falling leaf. Back on land, they sleep for about 10.8 hours a day, which allows them to be energetic again. This means their sleep on land is so important.
The scientists hope their work will help protect the places where elephant seals sleep when they’re on land.
( )36. Why do elephant seals go deep underwater for food
A. There is more food there.
B. They’re much safer there.
C. Their favorite food is there.
D. The food there is delicious.

D. what information the scientists got about elephant seals
( )39. What can we learn about elephant seals

Recently, many people in Chengdu, Sichuan saw a flying object crossing the sky. It was so strange that it has caused a heated discussion among people.
Most people don’t think that it is a plane because it was moving so fast without making any sound. Then what could it be Some people hold the view that it belongs to the aliens who are trying to reach the Earth and study our planet. However, that sounds too strange to be true. Another popular idea is that the object could be a fireball crossing the sky. A fireball is usually very bright and it looks like a fire dragon as it flies across the sky.
As far as I am concerned, I also guess it might be a fireball, but I can’t be sure. I’ll ask my science teacher for help or find more information about it on the Internet.
