Five years ago, it would have been more likely that I’d be turning out for Chelsea Football Club than attending the RHS Chelsea flower show, let alone building a garden there. As a promising young footballer, gardening was not part of my vocabulary.
It was after a disaster that I found gardening to be a form of relief. The night of 14 June, 2017 changed my life forever. The Grenfell Tower fire took the lives of 72 people. Living nearby, I was completely broken. I took to the streets to be among others in my attempt to find some comfort or peace of mind. What I encountered changed my attitude entirely.
With no thought or plan, I channeled my energy into greening and beautifying a deserted, unloved community space. I honestly didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but that didn’t matter. I journeyed to every garden centre within reach, asking for plants to be donated to our newly-developed community space. The response was strong. People would walk past and share a smile or some conversation. Phone numbers were exchanged and group chats were created. Dates and times were set for organized gatherings to share our stories, knowledge and history.
What’s eye-catching in the garden is a mangrove (红杉树) sculpture. Made with wood from deforested mangroves, it aims to raise awareness of the harmful impact we are having on the world as we continue to cut down our trees for profit. The building of the garden has been a community effort, and shows what can be done when people pull together and do something positive.
If visitors take one thing from the garden, I hope it is the awareness that we can come together as a community not just to respond to a disaster, but for the future generations who will have to live with the consequences of our actions today.
What do we know about the author
A. He was the founder of a football club. B. He stayed peaceful during the fire.
C. He was the organizer of a flower show. D. He changed his attitude to gardening.
25. Why did people gather in the garden
A. To communicate with each other. B. To purchase cheap green plants.
C. To find a place free from accidents. D. To enjoy the beauty of the mangroves.
26. What contributes to the building of the garden
A. Joint efforts of the community.
B. Supports from the government.
C. The author’s deep love for plants.
D. The author’s professional gardening skills.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Painful Lessons From a Disaster.
B. Possible Solutions to Deforestation.
C. Unexpected Gains From Gardening.
D. Friendly Reminders to a Community.

In shallow coastal waters of the Indian ocean, Dugong, a kind of sea cow, is in trouble. Environmental problems pose such a major threat to its survival that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) upgraded the species’ extinction risk status (地位) to vulnerable (脆弱的).
Much worse, Dugongs are at risk of losing the protection of the Torres Strait Islanders, who have looked after them historically, hunting them for food sustainably and monitoring their numbers. These native people keep their biodiversity, and have deep knowledge about their environment. But these people are also threatened, partly because rising sea levels are making it difficult for them to live there.
This situation isn’t unique to Dugongs. A research team conducted a study by analyzing 385 culturally important plant and animal species and found 68 percent were both biologically vulnerable and at risk of losing their cultural protection. The findings clearly illustrate that biology shouldn’t be the primary factor in shaping conservation policy, says Victoria Reyes-García, who led the study. When a culture declines, the species that are important to that culture are also threatened. “Conservationists think we need to separate people from nature,” says Reyes-García. “But that strategy misses the caring relationship many cultural groups have with nature.”
One way to help shift conservation efforts is to give species a “bio-cultural status,” which would provide a fuller picture of their vulnerability. In the study, the team adopted a new method to determine a species’ risk of disappearing — they included the languages of certain cultural groups in the research, and concluded that the more a cultural group’s language use declines, the more that culture is threatened, and the more culturally vulnerable its important species are.
The latest approach to conservation involves people that have historically cared for them. Scientists hope it will bring more efforts to recognize local communities’ rights and encourage their participation in conservation, taking advantage of humans’ connection with nature instead of creating more separation.
What is the relationship between the native people and Dugongs
The native people train Dugongs to survive.
The native people help to conserve Dugongs.
Dugongs force the native people to leave home.
Dugongs are endangered because islanders hunt them for food.
What can we infer from the third paragraph
Dugongs are at more risk of losing their cultural protection than other species.
Biologists play an important role in making conservation policy.
Culture is closely connected to species’ existence.
Conservationists prefer nature over people.
How is the new study method different from previous ones
It involves more preservation efforts.
It relies on the IUCN’s classification.
It highlights the effect of human languages.
It assesses the biological influence of a species.
What is the author’s attitude towards the latest approach
Critical. B.Favourable. C.Conservative. D.Ambiguous.
D
More digital devices equal less time to concentrate and to think. The negative effects of this on researchers are settled by computer scientist Cal Newport in his latest book, Slow Productivity.
The book’s title challenges the idea that productivity could always be increased with the help of technology, which is common in many workplaces. Newport, who studies technology in the workplace at Georgetown University in Washington DC, says that researchers and other knowledge workers need to slow down, and spend more time thinking how to improve quality in their work.
New communications technologies have enormous benefits, including speeding up research. But they are also compressing thinking munications technologies are sure to evolve further and to continue distracting researchers from their work.
Newport’s paper raises a much more fundamental question: what is the impact of lost concentration time on science — not just on the structure and process of science, but also on the content and quality of research Newport used many examples to explain the question. These examples will help researchers and institutional leaders to make better decisions about the technologies’ arrangement and time to think.
Newport also refers to some studies on how thinking time can be protected in a world of instant communication and gives suggestions on increasing thinking time, including limiting the number of items on to-do lists, and avoiding individual members sending e-mails to each other. For institutions, Newport recommends a clear workload management system — a way for managers to see everything that a colleague is expected to do — and then to adjust the workload if there are more tasks than there is available time.
What’s the general thought in many workplaces
Improving productivity is important.
High tech devices help increase productivity.
Workers should only focus on improving quality.
Knowledge workers are good at improving productivity.
Which can explain the underlined word “compressing” in paragraph 3
A. Wasting. B. Controlling.
C. Balancing. D. Decreasing.
How does Newport explain lacking thinking time is bad for science
By giving examples.
By surveying scientists.
By doing some research.
By referring to some studies.
35. What’s the suggestion of Newport for increasing thinking time
Lowering extra work burden.
Limiting the number of e-mails.
Working tasks should be complex.
Working environment should be friendly.

Everyone is faced with problems at some point or the other. 36 The problems, however, become different when past strategies do not work and there is no obvious solution. This can cause anxiety and stress. However, all you need to do is remain calm and use a new, different method. Here are some easy ways to solve problems.
Acknowledge that there is a problem. Many people refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem. They continue thinking everything will disappear on its own, so they fail to seek timely help. This does not help the situation in any way. 37
Keep a journal. Keeping a daily journal is the best way to solve deeper problems that may be affecting your peace of mind. 38 Sometimes, just by writing down issues, you might get to see that a problem isn’t as big as you are thinking.
39 Often, to solve a problem, you need to test your limits. You may have to take on certain challenges including learning something new to improve yourself. If you continue thinking of the problem as a threat and view yourself as a failure or a weak person, you will not be able to deal with the problem. Nevertheless, if you can see some benefits coming out of the problem, you will be in a better position to accept the challenge and learn something new.
Seek help. 40 If you are still unable to solve the issue despite giving it much thought and attention, seek help from friends, colleagues, family or even professionals.
Challenge yourself.
Set achievable goals.
Instead, it can make the problem bigger than before.
So write down all the problems you are facing right now.
Sometimes, certain problems can’t be solved on your own.
So try to come up with at least 10 different solutions to a problem.
Many problems can be solved by using methods we might have used before.

When I was sixteen, I was a rebellious (叛逆的) teenager, always seeking thrills and often getting into trouble. One day, after a fight, I was suspended from school (休学). My father, a man of few words but with a strong sense of discipline, decided that it was time for me to learn a hard lesson. The very next day, he took me to a construction site where he worked, and told me to start working.
It was a tough job. I had to carry heavy bricks and mix cement in the hot sun. My hands were hurt, and my back ached from the hard work. I had never worked so hard in my life, and the reality of manual labor hit me like a ton of bricks. I was used to the comfort of my school desk and the freedom after class. That was a sharp contrast, and it was a wake-up call.
As the days went by, I began to feel a deep sense of guilt. I knew I had let my parents down, and I had wasted the opportunities given to me. I was confused, unsure of what my future held. I started to think about the meaning and value of life. I realized that I had been taking my education for granted.
One evening, after a particularly tough day, I sat down with my father. I asked him why he had brought me to that place of sweat and hard work. He looked at me with his weathered eyes and said, “My son, I want you to understand that life is not always easy. You have to work hard for what you want. Education is your ticket to a better life, and I don’ t want you to waste it.”
His words resonated (产生共鸣) with me. I realized that I had been living in a bubble, blind to the struggles of the real world. I decided to go back to school, to make my parents proud and make something of myself.

第一部分:one possible version
Dear Mike,
Knowing that you are about to pay a visit to China, I am writing with great delight to extend my warmest welcome and share with you some details regarding body language in China.
In China, when meeting for the first time, people usually shake hands or wave instead of kissing or touching noses. Additionally, avoid standing too close and remember to make eye contact while communicating with others. Incidentally, like in many other countries, we nod our heads to say “yes” and shake our heads to say “no”.
Equipped with the appropriate body language, you will definitely enjoy your stay in China. I can’t wait to see you. (110 words)
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二部分:one possible version
The next morning, I told my father that I wanted to return to school. Having heard what I said, my dad smiled and said, “It seems that you are fed up with working on the site. But I hope it’s your thoughts about the future that make you want to go back to school, not the hard work on the site.” I told my dad that I had thought it through and learned the importance of study. My dad nodded, “You must study hard in the future.” I gave my dad a positive reply and a determined look. I knew I had made a right decision.
Back at school, I was a changed person. I no longer sought trouble or acted badly. I focused on my studies, and I began to appreciate the value of education. I made new friends who shared my passion for learning, and together, we supported each other in our academic pursuits. My dedication to my studies paid off as my grades started to improve significantly. My teachers noticed the transformation and praised me for my hard work. My father was equally proud of my achievements. His pride was evident in the way he spoke about me to others, and it fueled my determination to keep up the good work.

W: OK, I see. What sort of problems do you deal with in your work

M: I agree, a perfect 007 type.
W: Yeah, and his acting was so unbelievably natural.
M: What did you think of the story
W: It was the standard Bond movie with the usual beautiful women, the usual bad character — nothing new.
M: Well, I have to say that I thought the story was unusually good.
W: Fine, what did you think about the music I was totally impressed by it.
M: Yeah, it really added to the action scenes.
W: Yes, but unfortunately that brings up a weakness in the film for me: the special effects. Again, it’s just the same old stuff.
M: So, overall, how do you rate this movie
W: Well, I have to give it only two stars … a rating of “fair”. How about you
M: Well, I give it my highest rating … four stars out of five!
W: Hmm. Well, that’s all from us tonight. See you tomorrow and we’ll talk about a best-selling novel.

(Text 10)
M: Hi there. I’m Tim Tanner. I am honored to be here today. I’ve appeared on lots of TV shows with my brother Sam Tanner as the singing twin brothers. People often ask us what it’s like to be twins. Well, I was born ten minutes before Sam so I’m the older brother, although we do have a real older brother, Ken, who’s a year older than us. We were born premature — we suddenly appeared in October rather than January. Ken’s birthday is in December, so we’re pretty close in age.
Sam and I aren’t completely the same, but even our dad makes mistakes sometimes, because there’s hardly any difference in our hair, and we’re the same build. But as soon as we open our mouths, he’ll know which one it is.
In character we’re mostly similar — we’ve both always loved music, and we’ve always had a real interest in going out. However, people that know us say I’m not as confident as Sam is, which is probably true.
