Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs. Nanette O’ Neil gave a math 31 to our class. When the papers were 32 , she discovered that twelve boys had made the same mistakes throughout the paper.
There is really nothing new about 33 in the exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs. O’ Neill didn’ t even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to 34 after class. I was one of the twelve.
Mrs. O’ Neill asked 35 questions, and she didn’ t 36 us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the 37 words by Thomas Macaulay. “The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.” She then ordered us to 38 these words into our exercise-books one hundred times.
I don't 39 about the other eleven boys. Speaking for myself, I can say: it was the most important single 40 of my life. Thirty years after being 41 to Macaulay’ s words, they 42 seem to me the best yard-stick(准绳), because they give us a 43 to measure ourselves rather than others.

A group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking at a reunion and decided to visit their old university professor, now retired. During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress in their work and lives.
Offering his guests hot chocolate, the professor went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot chocolate and other things including cups-porcelain(瓷杯子), glass, crystal(水晶杯), some plain looking, some expensive, some elegant - - telling them to help themselves to the hot chocolate.
When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said: "I notice that all the nice looking and expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. The cup that you' re drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the hot chocolate. In most cases it is just more expensive, and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup; but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began eyeing each other's cups. Now consider this: Life is the hot chocolate; your job, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life. The cup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hot chocolate we have. The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything that they have. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Thank the Lord for your blessings in 2024. And enjoy your hot chocolate in 2025!”
56. When did they decide to go to see their professor
A. After the reunion. B. Before they graduated.
C. During the get-together. D. Just after the professor retired.
57. Why did the professor offer them different cups
A. Because cups were not enough for everyone.
B. Because cups were beautiful.
C. Because hot chocolate should be contained in different cups.

58. What caused the professor to say those words

59. What does the word“cup” in this passage refer to
A. hot chocolate B. happy things in life
C. tools to hold and contain life D. Life

B. To educate them that the happiest people don't have the best of everything.

D. To wish them to be grateful to their life and make the best of everything that they have.

Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(购物手推车). They will, in a lifetime, push the chrome-plated contraptions many miles. But few will know— or even think to ask—— who it was that invented them.
Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time, he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging(吃力地携带) groceries around in baskets they had to carry.
One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.
On June 4,1937, Goldman's first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn't wait to see them using his invention.
But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers give the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.
After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren't using his carts. “Don't you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket ” one shopper replied.
But Goldman wasn't beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony(假冒的) customers.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come— those who came bought more. With larger, easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.
Today's shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman's original model. Perhaps that's one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did
